The next regular meeting of the General Com ' mittee of the Royal Masonic Institution for Boys will be held at Freemasons' Hall on Saturday next , the 7 th July . Anglo-American Lodge , in our report last week . The Fishmongers' Company has made a grant of £ 100 to the London Society for the extension of University teaching . Bro . General Lord Wolseley was again under examination , on Tuesday , before the Select Committee of the House of Commons appointed to enquire into the Army Estimates , Bro . Lord Randolph Churchill being in the chair .

The Queen , after communications have passed with the Spanish Government , has consented to become Patron of the movement for celebrating the tercentenary of the defeat of the Spanish Armada . The 82 nd Anniversary Festival in aid of the funds of the Licensed Victuallers' Schools ,

Kenningtonlane , will be held on Tuesday next , the 3 rd prox ., at the Crystal Palace . Bro . Lord Robartes presided at the thirteenth annual meeting , on the 21 st inst ., of the Victoria-street Society for the Protection of Animals from Vivisection . The meeting , which vvas well attended , took place at the Westminster Palace Hotel .

Bro . the Lord Mayor presided at a meet ing of the Common Council held at the Guildhall , on the 21 st inst ., when Bro . Frank Green moved a resolution of condolence on the part of the Court with Her Majesty on the death of her son-in-law , the Emperor Frederick The resolution was carried unanimously . The old Masonic Hall , Chestnut-street ,

Philadelphia , the corner-stone of which vvas laid in 1853 , was recently pulled down , and the box then deposited in the stone has been recovered , and will be opened in the presence of the Grand Master of Pennsylvania at an early date , the contents being afterwards deposited in the Grand Lodge library .

Bro . the Marquis of Hartington presided at , and Bros . Sir W . Grossman , Sir Edward Watkin , Bart ., Viscount Ebiington , F . W . Maclean , and R . Jasper More attended , a meeting of Liberal Unionists , held at the offices of the party , in Great George-street , Westminster , on the 21 st instant .

The Earl of Rosebery presided at the opening on Friday , the 22 nd instant , of a newly-erected block of buildings in Lisson-grove , intended for the occupation of persons of the artizan class , Bro . Lord Wantage and others interested in this class of scheme for benefiting the working classes being present on the occasion .

General von Winterfeld , special envoy from the Emperor William II ., of Germany , arrived at Windsor Castle on Wednesday , and vvas introduced to an audience of her Majesty by the Marquis of Salisbury . The General vvas afterwards received by the Prince and Princess of Wales .

It appears that the Lodge of Sorrow to be held by the Pilgrim Lodge , No . 238 , as a mark of respect to our illustrious brother the Emperor Frederick of Germany will not be held till sometime in October , when the Masonic recess is over . We had the best authority for the statement in our last week's issue that it vvould be held in all probability on Thursday , the 5 th prox .

Bro . Lord Balfour of Burleiyh arrived at Windsor Castle last week as Groom in Waiting , while Bros . Lord E . Pelham Clinton and the Hon A . Yorke has left . Bros , the Earl of Mount Edgcumbe ( Lord Steward ) , and Lord Arthur Hill ( Comptroller of the Household ) , had audiences of her Majesty on Friday , the 22 nd instant , and presented addresses from both Houses of Parliament on the subject of

the Emperor Frederick's death . The Prince and Princess of Wales and Prince Albert Victor of Wales arrived at Marlborough House from Berlin , where they had been to attend the late Emperor ' s funeral , on Monday evening , Bro . Lord Suffield being one of the suite in attendance . On Tuesday the Prince called upon the King of the Belgians at the Hotel Metropole , and

was afterwards visited by his Majesty at Marlborough House . Later in the day his Royal Highness left London for Windsor on a visit to the Queen , while Prince Albert Victor returned to his regiment at York . Bro . Hughan , of Torquay , has kindly engaged to deliver a lecture at Hull on July 5 th , under the wing of the " Humber Installed Masters Lodge of Instruction , " of

which body Bro . M . C . Peck , G . Std . Br . of England , is the W . M . By permission of W . Bro . John Clark , the Master of No . 57 , the brethren will meet at Freemasons ' Hall , Osborne-street ; the subject of the lecture being "Sketches of Biitish Freemasonry , a Retrospect of Five Centuries . " A large attendance is expected , as well known members of the Craft are intending to be present from

Leeds and Bradford , as well as in the neighbourhood of Hull . On July 17 th , Bro . Hughan has promised to lecture at the Masonic Hall , Sunderland , under tbe chairmanship of Bro . the Rev . Canon Tristram , D . D ., Past Grand Chaplain of England , & c , the D . Prov . G . M . of Durham . The brethren in that province wish Bro . Hughan to lecture on the same subject as at Hull , and as the syllabus before us enbraced a very wide area , including the legends of the

Craft and the " Old Charges " from the fourteenth century with the history of Freemasonry down to the present time , we consider they have wisely decided , as they are not likely to have the opportunity soon again of hearing the well known Masonic historian , who at the close of each lecture , as usual , will be glad to answer any questions . We believe Bro . Hughan will also lecture at Glasgow , subject to arrangements to be made by Bro . E . Macbean , on July ioth .

The London Hospital has been presented with £ 2000 by the Goldsmiths' Company , and £ 210 from the Fishmongers' Company . The St . Ambrose Lodgeof Instruction , No . 18 91 , meeting at Baron's Court Hotel , West Kensington , is adjourned till Monday , September 23 rd .

"Sweet Lavender will be played lor the 100 th time on Tuesday next , and is still drawing the same enormous houses , the " house full" boards going out nightly . Bro . Lord Headley has left town for Ireland , to take command of the Kerry Militia ( 4 th Battalion Royal Munster Fusiliers ) of which he is colonel .

The anniversary festival in aid of the funds of the Newsvendors' Benevolent and Provident Institution will be held at the Cannon-street Hotel , on Wednesday next , the 4 th prox . Bros . Lord Halsbury ( Lord Chancellor ) , Lord Ashbourne ( Lord Chancellor of Ireland ) , Lord George Hamilton , and Sir M . E . Hicks-Beach , Bart ., attended the Cabinet Council held at the Foreign Office on Saturday last .

Bros . Lord Randolph Churchill , M . P ., and John Aird , M . P ., with others , attended a meeting at Greville House , Paddington , on Wednesday , in furtherance of a scheme for raising funds to meet a deficiency of £ 545 in the finances of the iSth Middlesex Rifle Volunteers .

The current number of "The Record " contains an interesting article , entitled , " With the North Sea Trawlers , " from the pen of a Special Clerical Correspondent sent out by that paper on board one of the vessels oi the Mission to Deep Sea Fishermen .

The Princess Henry of Battenberg has notified that she will lay the foundation stone of the Jubilee Almshouses at Greenwich , on Tuesday , the ioth prox ., the ceremony having been postponed from an earlier date in consequence of the death of the German Emperor .

It is understood that the value of the prizes which will be offered at the approaching meeting at Wimbledon of the National Rifle Association is upwards of £ 16 , 500 . This will be the last year the Association will meet at Wimbledon .

The annual examination of the children of the Commercial Travellers' Schools took place on Saturday last at the Institution , Pinner , and the prizes vvere afterwards distributed by Bro . Sir P . Cunliffe Owen , who spoke in high terms of the manner in which the children vvere being trained .

Bro . George Powell announces that he is removing his offices from 30 , Moorgate-street to 76 , Finsbury-pavement , E . C . ( Finsbury Chambers . ) We understand that Bro . Powell , after 28 years service as London Manager to the Norwich and London Accident Insurance now retires on an allowance , and will continue his business as general insurance broker at his new address .

The annual drill competition of boys attending public elementary schools will be held in the grounds of the Royal Albert Hall this ( Friday ) morning , and the annual Swedish drill competition of girls attending Board schools in the Hall itself , at 2 p . m . the same day . The challenge banners presented by the Society of Art- * and the chairman ( Mr . Helby ) of the Physical Education Committee of the London School Board will afterwards be presented by Lady Hart-Dyke .

Bro . Lord Mayor De Keyser has issued a strong appeal to the public for support towards the cost of the Royal Agricultural Society's Show , which will celebrate its Jubilee next summer in the Home Park , Windsor , her Majesty being the President of the year , and his lordship has consented to open a fund at the Mansion House towards defraying the heavy expenses which will be incurred on the occasion .

A Grand Fete and Festival—to be entitled the Silver Fete—will be held on July nth and three following days at the Royal Exhibition Gardens , South Kensington , under very distinguished patronage , in aid of the Victoria

Hospital for Children , to endeavour to pay off an existing debt of £ 3000 on the new out-patient wing , which was opened by the Prince and Princess of Wales in 1 S 86 . The board hope to make this fete one of the leading events of the London season of 188 S , and we wish it every success . A GENEROUS GIFT . —At Cheltenham , on Wednesday afternoon , vvas opened to the public a recreation ground just given to the town by Bro . J . T . Agg-Gardner ,

M . P . The Corporation of Cheltenham had selected a site adjacent tothe most crowded part of the town , and had obtained leave to borrow money for the purpose , when Bro . Agg- Gardner wrote to the Mayor asking his acceptance of a cheque for £ 3000 , to cover the proposed outlay . At the close of the proceedings on VVednesday , the Mayor declared that the ground should thenceforth bear the name of its generous giver , and be called the Agg-Gardner Ground .

AN IMPOSTOR . —At the Sevenoaks Police Court on the 22 nd inst ., William Ellison , of respectable appearance , was charged with obtaining by false pretences from Bro . Joseph H . Jewell Secretary of the Amherst Lodge , the sum of 5 s ., belonging to the lodge , on the 14 th instant . Prosecutor stated that on the 14 th instant the prisoner came to him and told him that he vvas a Freemason , and

was travelling to Dover to Aldershot , where he had obtained work . Prisoner added that his wife and three boys were stopping at a public house at Riverhead , and that on the previous morning his wife had been confined of twins , and consequently he was in sore need of assistance . Prisoner gave the password , and mentioned the names of lodges in Lancashire and Newcastle . Prosecutor believed him at the time to be a Freemasonand him 5 s Prisoners

, gave . statement respecting his wife being confined vvas proved to be false . Superintendent Waghorn informed the magistrates that the prisoner had obtained sums of money from the rector of Sevenoaks ( Rev . T . S . Curteis ) and other Freemasons in the town , who , however , would not prosecute . Prisoner vvas apprehended at Maidstone on Wednesday . He now admitted his guilt , and vvas committed tor trial .

Agg- Gardner wrote to the Mayor asking his acceptance of a cheque for £ 3000 , to cover the proposed outlay . At the close of the proceedings on VVednesday , the Mayor declared that the ground should thenceforth bear the name of its generous giver , and be called the Agg-Gardner Ground .

AN IMPOSTOR . —At the Sevenoaks Police Court on the 22 nd inst ., William Ellison , of respectable appearance , was charged with obtaining by false pretences from Bro . Joseph H . Jewell Secretary of the Amherst Lodge , the sum of 5 s ., belonging to the lodge , on the 14 th instant . Prosecutor stated that on the 14 th instant the prisoner came to him and told him that he vvas a Freemason , and

was travelling to Dover to Aldershot , where he had obtained work . Prisoner added that his wife and three boys were stopping at a public house at Riverhead , and that on the previous morning his wife had been confined of twins , and consequently he was in sore need of assistance . Prisoner gave the password , and mentioned the names of lodges in Lancashire and Newcastle . Prosecutor believed him at the time to be a Freemasonand him 5 s Prisoners

, gave . statement respecting his wife being confined vvas proved to be false . Superintendent Waghorn informed the magistrates that the prisoner had obtained sums of money from the rector of Sevenoaks ( Rev . T . S . Curteis ) and other Freemasons in the town , who , however , would not prosecute . Prisoner vvas apprehended at Maidstone on Wednesday . He now admitted his guilt , and vvas committed tor trial .
