M ., " having been drunk , that of " The Pro G . M ., Dep . G . M ., and the rest of the Grand Officers , Present and Past , " was coupled with the name of Bro . Terry .
Bro . Terry , in response , requested permission to give them a short history of a Grand Officer ' s career . In Masonry the first thing was the initiation , and a month afterwards the passing ; then in another month the raising . Then they _ achieved distinction in their own lodges ; then , if provincials , in their province they were honoured with ofiice ; then , by hard and good service , they attracted the notice of their Grand Master , and ultimately arrived at the
grand distinction uf office in Grand Lodge , and he ventured to say that it was within the grasp of any Mason to achieve that position if they followed the grand rule of the Crait and made themselves worthy of the honour . He wanted to tell them that without good and earnest work they could never attain the exalted position held so worthily by the officers of Grand Lodge , on whose behalf he begged most sincerely to thank them for their hearty reception of the toast .
Bro . Syer proposed the toast of "The W . M ., " saying it gave him great pleasure to be allowed to do so , because ^ as most of them knew , he had been closely associated with Bro . Chasteaneuf for the last 30 years , and honoured him for his just and upright conduct and sterling character . It was a source of comfort to him and no doubt to them to know that although when they so unanimously elected their W . M . it did not seem any too likely that he would
ever be able to take the position , yet he was there amongst them , and although not so well as they would like to see him , yet he was sufficiently recovered from his painful and serious illness to be installed , and to preside over them that night Had it not been for his affliction Bro . Chasteaneuf would have been an ornament to their lodge . ( Bro . Terry : And so he will be yet . " ) Well , let them all hope that uro . I erry ' s prophesy would be a true one ; at any rate , he could assure their esteemed VV . M . that he would receive
every assistance at their hands , and they all heartily hoped that he would before long recover the use of his voice , and ue as Bro . Terry had said , an honour to their lodge yet . the toast having been drunk most enthusiastically , Bro . Chasteaneuf rose to respond , but after a few brief words ot thanks was obliged to resume his seat , his voice utterly tailing him . J

been asked to thank by his colleague , Bro . McLeod , Secretary of the Royal Masonic Institution for Boys , for his splendid help . Now next March they intended to celebrate the Jubilee of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution , when he hoped to see their Grand Master , the Prince of Wales , presiding , and he asked that grand old lodge to send up a Steward . Bro . Millward had gathered some
£ 200 in three months ; there were yet nine months before March next , and if he could get £ 200 in three months for the Boys he felt sure that for the Jubilee of the Benevolent Institution , a special case , Bro . Millward could , as Steward of that lodge , get £ 600 . No Institution had a better claim on their Charity than the Old People . The Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution for the
Old People was the parent of the Boys' and Girls' Institutions , and he asked them to send up a Steward with a list that would be an honour to their lodge and the district to which it belonged . Bro . Grice , in responding to the toast of "The Installing Officer , " said the brethren all knew that anything he could do to enhance their pleasure or the prosperity of the lodg-e
he always did to the best of his abilities , and if he had that day pleased them he was pleased himself . With regard to Bro . Terry ' s remarks that some day their lodge would be a member of the Province of Kent , that they did not expect , but it had been suggested that London lodges might be formed into provincial lodges in the Province of London , and he trusted some day to see that suggestion realised . He
would not take up more of their time , but would simply thank them for their hearty reception of the toast . Bro . Cleal , in responding for "The Past Masters , " regretted the absence of Bro . Bell , their I . P . M ., but on behalf of himself and the other Past Masters present he could only say that as they had done their duty in the past , so they would in the future , and whatever service was
required of them would be rendered in the heartiest manner . He trusted the Past Masters would not be required to . do the work , but if the infirmities of their esteemed Master required it they would do all that was required of them . Bro . Milbourne said he always considered that when a W . M . became a Past Master he was like a jewel—not particularly required and carefully put away until it was
wanted—and his experience of the Past Masters of ( he Union Waterloo Lodg'e was , that so far as the working of the lodge went , they were very little wanted . With reference to the Charities , he intended to stand Steward at the next Festival of the Old People , and trusted to be
well supported . Bro . Terry did not tell them all , because at the Festival of the Old People next year every brother who qualified as a Life Governor would receive four votes instead of two , and lodges would get votes in proportion . He therefore trusted that the lodge would send up a sum that would be an honour to it .
Bros . Hughes and Clarke responded for " The Visitors , " and after " The Officers " had been toasted , the Tyler ' s toast concluded the proceedings . During the evening some good songs were rendered by Madam Florence Logan , Miss Rose Moss , Bro . T . J . Nell , and Mr . A . Nash , while the courtesy and kindness of the Past Masters was all that could be desired , and made the meeting- a grand success .
Nelson Lodge ( No . 700 ) . —The name of "Nelson" is identical with all things heroic , and is the synonym of victory , hence the heroic attitude and victorious prog-ress of the good , and as the newly-installed W . M . called it , " the dear old Nelson Lodge , " and hence the splendid array of Masons that attended its annual festival on Wednesday , the 15 th inst .,
at Freemasons' Hall , when Bro . J . McCollough , S . VV . and VV . M . elect , was installed as its Master for the ensuing 12 months . Bro . S . E . Southgate , W . M ., opened the lodge , and passed Bros . Lloyd and H . Dudman . He then in a most effective manner installed Bro . McCollough , who invested his officers as follows : Bros . S . E . Southgate , I . P . M . ; G . F . Taylor , S . VV . ; W . Lawson , J . W . ; Rev .
R . Jamblin , M . A ., P . M ., P . P . G . Chap ., Chap . ; J . H . Roberts , P . M ., Treas . ; J . Warren , P . M ., Sec . ; H . Tufnell , S . D . ; G . R . Nichols , J . D . ; J . Sanderson , P . Long , Stwds . Bro . Southgate , having completed his arduous task , was
rewarded with the hearty applause of all present . He was also presented with a handsome and valuable Past Master ' s jewel lor yeoman service rendered the lodge and as a small token of the esteem of the brethren , and it was also resolved that a hearty vote of thanks be presented him , the same to be inscribed on the minutes of the lodge , for his services as Installing Officer that day , for both of which
Bro . Southgate feelingly returned thanks . The banquet was partaken of at the New Falcon Hotel , Gravesend , the menu , wines , and fruits being of the choicest and served in profusion , the Stewards being especially assiduous in their courtesy to the visitors and brethren generally . Besides the above mentioned , the following brethren were
present : Bros . C . Jolly , P . M . ( Hon . ) , Sec . 1472 , and 21 S 4 ; F . J . Dawson , P . M ., G . Crawford , P . M ., T . Butt , P . M ., A . W . Woodley , P . M ., T . Ovenden , P . M ., R . M ., " and said he felt sure they would have a good Master , and would spend a prosperous and happy year under his guidance ; he therefore asked them to drink the toast with the enthusiasm
it deserved . The W . M . thanked them for the kind manner in which they had received the toast of his health , and could assure them that nothing should be wanting on his part whereby the Nelson Lodge should lose aught of its present lustre . Bro . Busbridge , in responding for "The Visitors , " said he did not intend to make a speech , but rather to follow the
brilliant example of their VV . M ., and let brevity be , as it was said to be , the soul of wit , but as W . M . of their neighbouring lodge—the Pattison—he felt . that he must congratulate the VV . M . upon arriving at his present proud and exalted position . He trusted their VV . M . would have a good year of office ; that he would have good men to initiate into the Craft , and good men alone , for quality was
the standard of a lodge s success , and not quantity . He asked them to carry out the principles of Masonry pure and unsullied . He thanked them for their hearty reception of his name . Bro . Mattey regretted the unavoidable absence of the Master of his lodge , the Union Waterloo . He wished the W . M . and the lodge every prosperity .
Bro . Col . Vansittart , on behalf of the youngest lodge in the district , the Ordnance , begged to thank them most heartily for their hospitality and courteous reception of the visitors . He trusted the Nelson and the Ordnance would be good friends and neighbours , and assured them that the Nelsons would always receive a hearty welcome at the Ordnance .
Bro . Captain Weston thanked them on behalf of the Ubique Lodge , and was pleased to see so many dear old faces around their hospitable board . The Nelson Lodge had always been famous for its hospitality and excellent working , both of which had that day been admirably exemplified . He congratulated the lodge on its W . M . and the VV . M . upon his lodge , and hoped to be on the list of
their visitors for many . years to come . Bro . Appleby also responded , and the other toasts , "The Past Masters , " " The Installing Officer " " The Officers , " and Tyler ' s toast were g'iven and responded to . Bro . Roberts presided at the piano , and with Bros . Brown and Bidgood performed selections during the evening .
Bros . J . Plume , E . B . Hobson , C . H . Campbell , H . Tufnell , and G . R . Nichols sang pretty ballads , and Bro . Dudley Causton gave several musical sketches to the intense delight of every one present , in fact the whole affair was as heroic as it will be historical , and a fitting close to the reign of an esteemed and popular Master .

The ballot was taken as a joining member for Bro . Jas . La Feuillade , W . M . 13 S 1 ( late of the West Kent Yeomanry ) , and proved
unanimous in his favour . The W . M . then proceeded to install the W . M . elect , Bro . H . VV . Roberts , which ceremony being completed , the newly-installed VV . been asked to thank by his colleague , Bro .
W . ; Rev .

The minutes of the previous meeting having been conlirmed , the by-laws as revised by the special Committee appointed for that purpose were passed , and ordered to be forwarded to Grand Lodge for confirmation .
M . proceeded to the appointment and investment of his officers as follows : Bros . Capt . Percy Shove , S . W . ; Lieut . A . J . Heath , J . VV . ; Col . Hugh M . Gordon , P . M ., P . P . G . D . It was expressed by several that this meeting was one of , if not the most , successful the lodge has yet held .
