Masonic Notes.

Masonic Notes .

Pressure on our space has compelled us to hold over till next week our report of the annual meeting of the Provincial Grand Lodge of Hertfordshire , which was held in the Shire Hall , Hertford , under the banner of the Hertford Lodge , No . 403 , on Tuesday . We may ,

however , state briefly , for the information of our Herts brethren generally , that the meeting was a great success . Bro . T . F . Halsey , M . P ., Prov . Grand Master , presided in person , and the proceedings were extended on this occasion in consequence of the Provincial Grand

Master having very kindly undertaken to lay the foundation-stone of a new hall for the parish of St . Andrew's . The brethren , therefore , marched in procession , wearing their full Craft clothing and jewels ,

from the Shire Hall to the site of the proposed building , the unwonted scene bringing together a large concourse of spectators . When the ceremony was over , the procession wended its way back to the Shire Hall , and concluded the business of th- ? day .

* * * There is another circumstance which deserves to be recorded in an especial manner . In view of the near approach of the Jubilee Festival of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution—which will be held early next

year under distinguished patronage—Prov . Grand Lodge voted a donation of £$ 2 10 s . to be placed on the list of Bro . Halsey , who has already returned his name to act as Steward on this momentous occasion , the sum ordinarily voted to a Charity being only ^ 21 .

Moreover , Bro . Halsey , in support of the proposal to vote the aforesaid , £ 52 ios ., made an earnest and eloquent appeal to the brethren to come forward and give their support to this valuable Institution , and expressed the hope that every lodge in the province

would be represented . We cordially echo this hope . Bro . Terry has been a Grand Officer of the province since 186 9 ; he has done it many services , and the Herts brethren have loyally supported him in his efforts to raise funds for the Institution with which he

has been so long connected . We feel sure , therefore , that Bro . Halsey ' s invitation to his lodges will be worthily responded to , and that Hertfordshire will figure very creditably in the Returns of the Old People ' s Jubilee . * * *

We congratulate Bro . Alderman Joseph Savory . Lord Mayor of London—now Sir Joseph Savory , Bart ., —and Sheriffs Farmer and Bro . Augustus Harris—now Sir William Farmer and Sir Augustus Harris—on the honours which her Majesty the Queen has been pleased

to confer upon them in recognition of the hospitality shown by the City of London at their late reception of the Emperor of Germany . Such honours are usually bestowed on these civic dignitaries to commemorate the visit of an Emperor or King to the City ,

but they are not the less merited in this case because they have been given in obedience to custom . His lordship and the Sheriffs admirabl y maintained the credit of our capital City , and we wish them joy of the honours they have now received . * # #

It will g ive many of our readers much pleasure to leara that M . W . Bro . Clifford P . McCalla , Grand Master of Pennsylvania , is now on his way to Europe , having sailed in the City of Berlin on the 15 th instant . He expects to be in London from July 28 th to

August ist . We are sorry that the season is not favourable , as far as the lodges are concerned , for offering that hospitality we should desire , but his many friends will not miss the opportunity of renewing their

fellowship with our distinguished brother if the opportunity is afforded them , and his welcome will be none the less hearty and sincere because of the absence of a more formal reception .

The Anglo-American Lodge is fortunate in having the privilege of entertaining at successive meetings some distinguished American brother , and Tuesday last was no exception to the almost general rule , when

M . W . Bro . G . C . Conner , Past Grand Master of Tennessee , was the honoured guest of this hospitable lodge . The after-dinner proceedings were bri ghtened by the oratory of the visitor , and the brethren will long remember this particularly happy evening .
