PROVINCES—10 7 STEWARDS ... £ 1312 19 6 GRAND TOTAL £ 1858 3 o The Earl of EUSTON proposed "The Ladies . " According to all ancient traditions the ladies were much more able to sing their own praises than a man could , but he felt he could not say too much . They could not do

without the ladies . What household was so blessed as that which was presided over by a good woman , and what community of men did not feel their hearts lighter when women were among them ? God bless them all , and might they be at these annual festivals of the Mark Benevolent Fund on every occasion when they were held .

Bro . MEAD replied , and said that he had it from the ladies that they had enjoyed themselves very much that evening . He would add that their hearts were full of charitable feeling towards the Mark Benevolent Fund . Viscount DUNGARVAN proposed " The Board of Stewards , " which was responded to by Bro . J ABEZ CHURCH .

Bro . FRANK RICHARDSON proposed "The Visitors . " Mark Masonry was spread over the four quarters of the earth , and they had with them that evening Bro . Dawson , D . G . M . of Malta , and Bro . David Rees , of East London , South Africa . He had great pleasure in proposing this toast ,

because he had had the honour and pleasure himself of " putting a girdle round the earth , " and he would say that in the distant colonies of South Australia and New Zealand he met with the most hearty , fraternal , and Masonic greetings it was possible to receive . He therefore offered the right hand of friendship and hospitality to all those visitors that night .

Bro . DAWSON , in reply , said the colonies looked upon themselves as Britannia ' s children . The visitors were deeply impressed with the kindl y reception which was always given to them in Masonic gatherings , and they were no less deeply impressed with the reception they had had that evening . The company then adjourned to the drawing' room , and enjoyed a charming concert , under the direction of Bro . Henry A . Rose , A . R . A . M ., Past G . Org . ( Professor of the Royal Academy of Music .

ANALYSIS OF THE RETURNS . It was hardly to be expected that the brilliant success which attended the annual Festival of the Mark Benevolent Fund in 1890 would be repeated in the year immediate ! } ' following it , and our Mark brethren have no reason to be discouraged because there is a very considerable diminution , amounting to about ^ 500 , in Wednesday ' s total as compared with that of last year . In the case of annual events of this character we must be prepared for fluctuations in the wrong as well as in the ri ght direction , and after the strenuous efforts that were made in behalf of the

Anniversary last month of the Royal Masonic Institution for Boys , we consider the result which was announced on this occasion as an indication that the Mark Benevolent Fund is as firmly established as ever in the estimation of members of the Mark Degree . We must also bear in mind that while Bro . the Earl of Euston , who presided as Chairman at the 1 S 90 Festival , was supported by a Board of Stewards numbering 179 ladies

and brethren , Bro . Viscount Dungarvan , who occupied the chair on Wednesday , had only a Board of 148 ladies and brethren to second him in his efforts , so that while the sum of ^ 2354 constituted a most admirable return by the former , the lesser amount of ^ 1858 3 s ., which the latter Board had the satisfaction of raising is not unduly disproportionate . The following brief Analysis will demonstrate this more clearly :

The contingent of Lady Stewards , which mustered 19 strong in 1890 , and raised £ 82 8 s ., was composed on Wednesday of only seven , and the total of their contributions , so far as they were made separately and distinctly from the rest ofthe Board , was only £ 34 15 s . 6 d , The General Board , too , returned only £ 52 ios ., as compared with £ 117 12 s . in 1890 . But the 11 brethren who acted for twelve of the LONDON LODGES were able to compile a total of ^ 319 6 s ., while the 13 Stewards for eleven lodges last 6 d The 16

year raised ^ 334 13 s . . Unattached Stewards are entered for a total of £ 138 12 s ., as against the ^ 74 us . obtained by the 12 Unattached brethren of 1 S 90 . , In the result , we find that the Lady Stewards , the General Board , the London Lodges , and the Unattached made up a contingent of 42 Stewards , who amongst them raised ^ 558 13 s . 6 d ., while in 1890 there were 56 Stewards in this section of the Board , whose aggregate amounted to ^ 609 4 s . 6 d . Nor do we see any reason to suppose that the section which represented

IHE PROVINCES has grounds for dissatisfaction with the result of its canvass . In 1890 the number of Stewards included under this head was 121 , and the total of then ' lists ^ 1744 14 s . 6 d . On Wednesday the Provincial brethren were only i ° 7 » and the aggregate of their lists - £ 1312 19 s . 6 d .

BERKS AND OXON , with five Stewards from four out of its six lodges , contributed £ 40 12 s ., the return last year being £ 77 7 s ., and the number of Stewards ten . B RISTOL was unrepresented by any brother , but it fulfilled its duty admirably by remitting a contribution of ^ 52 ios . C HESHIRE sent £ 5 5 s ., and D ORSETSHIRE , by the hands of Bro . Sir R . N . Howard , Dep . Prov . G . M ., £ 31 "

while EAST ANGLIA , with two Stewards , returned ^ 26 is . G LOUCESTEKSI-IIRE AND HEREFORDSHIRE , with three Stewards , figures in the Returns for £ 10 ios ., and HAMPSHIRE AND THE ISLE OF WIGHT , with _ five Stewards , of whom two were Unattached , for ^ 36 15 s . Last year E ASI ANGLIA gave £ Sg 5 s ., and HANTS AND THE ISLE OF WIGHT , £ 5 ^ ' ' while BRISTOL AND CHESHIRE were unrepresented . Four out of the five lodges in HERTFORDSHIRE sent up Stewards , the Rose and Lil y having two strings to its bow in B "
