A review of the London Fire Brigade was held in Victoria Park on Saturday last . Bro . Captain Shaw was in command , and there was an immense concourse of spectators , who loudly applauded the men as they went past at a trot and afterwards at a gallop . Sir John Lubbock , Bart .,
M . P ., afterwards presented medals to six men who had exhibited great courage in rescuing lives at fires , while other men who had been commended for their gallantry were presented . A vote of thanks to Sir John Lubbock for having presided as Chairman brought the proceedings to a close .
The match between Sussex and Notts , which was expected to have ended in a draw , terminated in favour of the latter county by three wickets . Sussex in her first innings made 332 , while Notts compiled a total of only 264 . At their annual meeting on Monday , the renters or debenture holders of Drury-lane Theatre passed a resolution warmly thanking Bro . Sheriff Harris for his management of the theatre during the past year . The Goldsmiths' Company have voted £ 100 , the Grocers ' Company £ 50 , the Girdlers' Company £ 26 5 s ., and the Vintners' Company £ 10 ios ., towards the funds of the West London Hospital , Hammersmith-road .
A piece of Crown land in Pall Mall , nearly opposite the Travellers' Club , was leased on Saturday last for a term of eight years at an annual rental of ^' 1525 , or at the rate of 8 s . 6 d . per foot of area , which is about equivalent to a selling price of £ 500 , 000 per acre .
Mrs . Harry L . Foster s garden party and " At Home , " at Walton-grove , Walton-on-Thames , took place on Wednesday . The company numbered over 200 , including several Members of Parliament , of the County Council , of the School Board , and of the Corporation of the City of London .
On the occasion of the visit of the Prince and Princess of Wales to Birmingham on Tuesday last to open the Law Courts of the city , Lord Leigh , Prov . Grand Master of Warwickshire , presented an address from the Freemasons of his province , which was suitably acknowledged by the M . W . Grand Master .
At the last meeting of the Provincial Grand Lodge of Meath , held in the Masonic Hall , Cavan , a beautifully illuminated address and a gold repeater watch were presented to Bro . Dr . F . E . Clarke of Boyle , who held the office of Provincial Grand Secretary from 18 S 0 to 1 S 90 , in gratitude for his valuable services , and as a mark of affection and esteem .

A review of the London Fire Brigade was held in Victoria Park on Saturday last . Bro . Captain Shaw was in command , and there was an immense concourse of spectators , who loudly applauded the men as they went past at a trot and afterwards at a gallop . Sir John Lubbock , Bart .,
M . P ., afterwards presented medals to six men who had exhibited great courage in rescuing lives at fires , while other men who had been commended for their gallantry were presented . A vote of thanks to Sir John Lubbock for having presided as Chairman brought the proceedings to a close .
The match between Sussex and Notts , which was expected to have ended in a draw , terminated in favour of the latter county by three wickets . Sussex in her first innings made 332 , while Notts compiled a total of only 264 . At one time , indeed , it seemed as if she would have been obliged to follow on , but this was avoided by the steady batting of
Shacklock and Sherwin . On going in for their second venture the Sussex men were all disposed of for 3 S runs , not one of them succeeding in getting into double figures . This lefr Notts 107 to win , and the required runs were obtained , but not till seven of the ten wickets had been disposed of .
The annual meeting of the Charities Committee of the Province of Durham was held on Tuesday , the 14 th inst ., at Durham , when most of the lodges in the province were represented . Bro . C S . the Committee , and the hearty thanks of the Committee were given to Bro . Lane on his retirement for his able services during the 13 years he has been Chairman . Bro . Corbitt , was re-elected Treasurer , and Bro . Bradley , Secretary . It was agreed that the General Committee be recommended to invest the sum of about £ 1000 in railway stock . Bro . Sir H . Williamson , P . G . M ., Bros . T . Coulson , C . S . Lane , R . Singleton , and R . Luck were appointed trustees of the fund .
In Amsterdam , where one of the first persecutions to which the present Masonic organisation was subjected , occurred , a lodge continued to meet , after an order had been issued foibidding their assembling . They met in a private house . One evening the members of the lodge were arrested , and the next day were arraigned before the Court of Justice . Here , in the presence of the whole city ,
the Master and Wardens defended themselves . They said they could not prove the innocence of the Institution by a public exposure of the secrets , but they were willing- to initiate any person in the confidence of the magistrates , who could then give information respecting the true design of the Institution , upon which they could depend . Accordingly the town clerk was selected , and after his initiation ,
hii report so pleased his superiors that all the magistrates and principal persons of the city became members and zealous supporters of the Institution . It is useless tosay that the meetings of lodges were no longer prohibited . And so must every such test prove satisfactory to every honest searcher after Masonic light . It is only ignorance that leads good men to oppose itj fanaticism and bigotry can not in any way be convinced . —New York Dispatch .

The marriage licence clerk in Washington reports that seldom is he asked to issue a licence on Friday . He attributes this to the superstition that Friday is a dav of ill-luck .
Mr . Charles Hudson will create the part of the Ferryman in the new drama , " The Ferryman ' s Daughter , " to be produced to-morrow ( Saturday ) evening at the Hammersmith Lyric . He will be supported by Mr . George R . Foss , who plays the villain of the pie : e , an aristocratic adventurer , who is shadowed by Inspector Gleddow , Mr . David James , jun .

The Masonic world has an interest in German Freemasonry for several reasons . One reason is the theory entertained by many brethren that there is a direct line of correspondence between the ancient Steinmetzen of Germany and the Masonic Fraternity as it now exists . Another reason for special interest on the part of English-speaking Masons is that Germans are numerous in countries other
