SHEFFIELD . Talbot Chapter ( No . : 6 ) . —This chapter was opened by the M . W . S ., Bro . After being placed in the chair of his predecessor most

impressively by the Inspector-General of the district , he appointed his officers for the year , addressing each on the duties they had to perform , which was supplemented by their illustrious brother . The business of the chapter being completed , it was closed . The brethren assembled in the dining hall for thebanquet , which was all that could be desired , presided over by the

again amongst them in improved health , which he trusted would gradually improve . 111 . Bro . Banister , on rising to respond , was received with marks of the greatest goodwill and affection , and thanked them most cordially , for their great kindness ; he also thanked them for the very handsome present they had made him on his golden wedding , which he was unable , through illness , to receive personally last year , and which they presented to Bro . F . W . Banister , the worthy son of their illustrious chief . He thanked the M . VV . S . for the

very kind words—he had expressed his hope that they might long be honoured with his visits and receive his valuable instructions . SUMMER ENTERTAINMENT TO THE ANNUITANTS AT CROYDON .

The annual summer entertainment to the residents in the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution at Croydon was given on Wednesday last under most favourable circumstances . The day was beautifull y fine , and the Institution ' s grounds were in their best garb . The

visitors , who travelled by the 3 . 30 p . m . train on the South-Eastern Railway from Cannon-street , consisted of the following brethren and ladies : Thomas Cubitt , A . M . Terry , J . J . Berry , M . E . Raikes , A . H . Tattershall , E . F . Newton , M . Dewsnap , S . Vallentine , C . F . Hogard , J . Driscoll , Bro . and

Mrs . James E . Terry , Alex . Mullord , Miss Mullord , J . A . Farnfield , E . Withers , Hugh Cotter , P . M . 554 , Miss Cotter , Miss Harriet Cotter , Eleanor Dewsnap , C . C . Newton , J . Newton , J . M . McLeod , Mrs . McLeod , J . W . Dewsnap , W . Belchamber , W . H . Hubbert , C . Hubberd , Charles

Lacey , Charles Kempton , Mrs . and Miss Kempton , Mr . Sadgrove , H . Massey , Miss Annie R . Massey , Miss Cissie Crutch , Miss Jessie E . Terry , Aida Crutch , Dr . and Mrs . Strong , Miss Owen , F . H . Cheesewright , A . M . Barnard , A . S . Saull , E . Norman , James Terry ( Secretary ) , and John G . Stevens .

The visitors were received at the Institution by Bro . and Mrs . Terry , and shortly afterwards partook of tea . Various presents were made to the annuitants , the Supreme Council , as usual , giving tea and sugar to the female annuitants and tobacco to the males . The Misses Cotter also , who never go down empty-handed ,

presented each of the residents with a pot of preserves . After tea the customary round of visits was paid , both the brethren and ladies visiting each annuitant in turn . As the entertainment to the old people was not given till seven in the evening , the interval which was spared from the visits was spent in the delightful grounds of

the Institution , which certainly did great credit to the gardener . It was generally remarked that the style in which they were laid out was most praiseworthy , and that they made a very pretty horticultural display . The kitnhen plots set apart for the annuitants were likewise inspected , and it was

clear from the state of the vegetables that their progress must afford considerable attraction and an agreeable pastime to their several owners . When the annuitants and visitors were summoned b y sound of bell to the hall of the Institution there was prepared for them what turned out to be one of the most

agreeable and lively . variety entertainments ever given within those walls . It was due to members of the famous Savage Club , who had been approached b y Bro . Terry , that such was provided . Bro . Geoffrey Thorne very kindly organised the party of entertainers , which consisted of Messrs . F . H . Cheesewright , Lovett King ,

Sam . Wright , John Le Hay , and Ernest Lake . He had arranged for other members of the club to participate in the performances , Messrs . Herbert Campbell , W . Nicholl , Atkinson , the Australian mimic , E . J . Odell , and Ernest Langton , but these delineators were at the last moment prevented by professional engagements

from attending , and their absence was apologised for by Bro . THORNE , when he acknowledged the vote of thanks , which , on the motion of Bro . FARNFIELD , was unanimously passed at the close of the evening . The entertainment was entirely successful . It was throughout humorous , and evoked roars of laughter

from all the company . It would be invidious to make comparisons , for all the performers were of the best , whether Bro . Thorne , who himself was an active participator in entertaining either as singer or mimic , Lovett King , as both pianist and singer , F . H . Cheesewright , Lake , and Wright , and John Le Hay , with his droll two dolls and his ventriloquism . Unabated

interest in the entertainment was displayed by the audience throughout , and another red-letter day was added to the annals of this excellent Institution , which , next year , will celebrate its Jubilee , and the managers of which hope to do so with a Stewards' list which shall eclipse the highest list hitherto secured by a Masonic Charitable Institution . The part y broke up at ten o ' clock .

An unfortunate accident occurred to Bro . Crutch , who was awaiting the arrival of the train at London Bridge to meet his daughters . He was thrown down by a mail bag ejected from the train , and one of his knees so seriously injured as to require surgical attention . ¦?

Under the direction of the W . M ., Bro . H . E . Coffin , and officers , the annual summer outing of the above lodge took place on Thursday , the 16 th inst . The party , including ladies , numbering nearly a hundred , left Paddington Station at 10 . 35 for Maidenhead , where they embarked on the steam launches the Merry

Thames and the Favourite , which had been specially chartered for the trip , and proceeded in the most delightful weather down the river to East Molesey . During the journey an excellent lunch was served , and the beautiful music played by the bands on board added charm to the other pleasures enjoyed .

Among the brethren present were Bros . H . E . Coffin , W . M . ; A . T . Eyres , I . P . M . ; F . Robinson , S . W . ; E . Styles , S . D . ; A . A . Nottingham , I . G . ; W H . Williams , D . visitors , who travelled by the 3 . 30 p . m . train on the South-Eastern Railway from Cannon-street , consisted of the following brethren and ladies : Thomas Cubitt , A . M . Terry , J . J . Berry , M .
