Brassey , amid great cheering , rode the winning horse in a field of six for the Normanhurst stakes . Bro . H . W . Henniker Ranee , LL . D . ( of the firm of Messrs . Wynne Baxter , Ranee , and Meade ) , has been elected one of the guardians of the poor for Fulham .

Bro . the Earl of Galway has consented to preside at the sixty-eighth Anniversary Festival of the Royal Caledonian Asylum , to be held on Thursday , May 3 rd , at Freemasons' Tavern . Bro . the Lord Mayor and the Lady Mayoress

It is said that Bro . the Earl of Carnarvon , Pro Grand Master , will be asked to accept the office of President of the new Pipe Roll Society . Bro . Alderman Sir B . S . Phillips has been elected a Vice-President of a newly-formed Sussex Sanitary Inspection Association . Bro . Mr . Deputy Saunders will preside at the annual meeting of the Sunday Schools of the Greenwichroad Congregational Church to-morrow . Bro . Henry Irving presided on Thursday last at the annual festival of the Lyceum Theatre Provident and Benevolent Fund .

Bro . H . Halifax Wills was on Saturday last installed W . M . of the Mizpah Lodge , No . 1671 , at thc Albion Hotel , Aldersgate-street . On Friday last Bro . Sir Charles Dilke , M . P ., in the temporary absence at Windsor of the Home Secretary , received a deputation from the London District Board of the Amalgamated Union of Operative Bakers and Confectioners on the subject of the unsanitary condition of London Bakehouses .

We have had submitted for our inspection a very attractive and useful article which the patentee calls the Combination Fitzroy Barometer and Time-Piece . It is fitted in a polished oak case and contains a Fitzroy barometer and brass indicator , thermometer , storm glass , and a scale explanatory of the rise and fall of the mercury , direction of the wind , & c . The whole is surmounted by an

excellent S-day clock , and is altogether a wonderful two guineas worth . We are asked to state that in consequence of alterations that have been made at the Cafe Royal , the Regent-street entrance only will be available in future for the lodge room and the saloons A . B . C .

At the meeting held on Tuesday afternoon at the City Terminus Hotel , Cannon-street , for the purpose of strengthening the hands of Bro . B . Samuelson , M . At the last meeting of the Gallery Lodge a founders' and Past Master ' s jewel was presented to the late Secretary , Bro . Basil Cooke . The Euphrates Lodge of Instruction will on Monday next remove to the Mother Red Cap , High-street , Camden Town , at eight o'clock , and every Monday night

Lord Alcester took the oath and his seat in the House of Lords on Thursday evening last . His lordship was formally introduced to the Lord Chancellor by Bro . Sir Albert VV . Woods , ( Garter ) G . D . of C , and accompanied to the table by Lords Haslech and Wolseley .

The Princess Louise and the Marquis of Lome left Boston , Mass ., for Ottawa , on Monday" ] the io * th inst ., and on their arrival the next day at the latter city were most cordially greeted by a large crowd , amongst whom were the ministers and other high functionaries .

Among those present at the complimentary dinner given by the officers of the Royal Marines at St . James ' s Hall , on Monday evening , to the Duke of Edinburgh as Honorary Colonel of that force , were the Prince of Wales , the Duke of Connaught , and the Duke

of Cambridge . The Queen and Princess Beatrice , attended by the ladies and gentlemen of the Court , left Windsor Castle for Osborne on Tuesday . It is expected her Majesty will remain in the Isle of Wight for about three weeks and then return to Windsor .

The Prince of Wales will attend the first Spring Meeting at Newmarket next week , leaving town on Tuesday in time Ior the races and returning on Friday afternoon . Once again there is a rumour that Bro . Santley , the great English baritone , has resolved on entering a monastery , it being said that he has joined the Passionist Fathers at Sulton , near St . Helen ' s , as a lay brother .

VVith reference to the article on the Hospital for Sick Children in Great Ormond-street , which appeared in our issue of the 7 th inst ., we have received the following letter from a lady : " As we want to launch into bricks and mortar it would be appropriate that the great building guild should help us . lt is a pity that those good old times are past when the master and his men worked at the Craft . It might otherwise be given unto us to see the Prince of

Wales and the humbler brethren working shoulder to shoulder in raising the walls of the Childrens' Hospital . " With the commencement , in May , of its next volume , "The Journal of Forestry , " still conducted by Mr . F . G . Heath , author of " Autumnal Leaves" and editor of Gilpin ' s " Forest Scenery , " will take a " new

departure . Under the altered title of " Forestry : a magazine for the country , " it will be enlarged in size and still further popularised . The May part will include a descriptive article by Mr . Richard Jefferies , entitled "The Contents of Ten Acres , " and "A Forgotten President of Agriculture , " by Mr . R . A . Kinglake .

The '* Owl' Glee Society gave their final concert for the season on Monday , the gth ult ., to a very large and distinguished audience . A well-selected programme was arranged for the delectation of the numerous ladies and gentlemen assembled , who were not wanting in their appreciation at the able ability displayed by the artistes , whose names for the season were Bros . Collins and Ashton ( altos ) , Bros . Thompson , James , and Moss ( tenors ) ,

and Bros . Hubbard and Bevan ( bassos ) , and strengthened on the present occasion b y the able services of Madame Ashton , who sang some of her best songs , and graciously acceded to well - deserved encores . Thc comfort of the gathering was mainly due to the untiring zeal of VV . Maddock , Esq ., the society's honorary superintendent . The society , as hitherto , gave their concerts in the Pillar Room of the Cannon-street Hotel , E . C .

The Princess Louise and the Marquis of Lome left Boston , Mass ., for Ottawa , on Monday" ] the io * th inst ., and on their arrival the next day at the latter city were most cordially greeted by a large crowd , amongst whom were the ministers and other high functionaries .

Among those present at the complimentary dinner given by the officers of the Royal Marines at St . James ' s Hall , on Monday evening , to the Duke of Edinburgh as Honorary Colonel of that force , were the Prince of Wales , the Duke of Connaught , and the Duke

of Cambridge . The Queen and Princess Beatrice , attended by the ladies and gentlemen of the Court , left Windsor Castle for Osborne on Tuesday . It is expected her Majesty will remain in the Isle of Wight for about three weeks and then return to Windsor .

The '* Owl' Glee Society gave their final concert for the season on Monday , the gth ult ., to a very large and distinguished audience .
