retired on account of illness , and at a subsequent lodge of emergency Bro . Sculley , J . W ., was unanimously chosen in place of Bro . Eng ., honoured the proceedings with his presence , and was received with grand honours . The lodge was opened by Bro . Capt . Eugene Sweny , W . M ., and P . P . G . J . W . Kent ; and Bro . F . G . Nichols , of Craft lodge

Florence Nightingale having successfully passed the ballot was advanced to the Degree of M . M . M .. Bro . Dewat then took the chair , and with the usual ceremonies Bro . Sculley was placed in the chair and saluted pro forma . He then invested his officers as follows : Bros . Dr . C . W . Y . Godwin , A . M . D ., R . A ., P . G . D . C . Kent , as S . W . ; Sydney Clark , J . W . j J . Mathams , M . O . ; G . Risch , S . O . ; E . Denton , J . O . j Captain E . Sweny , I . P . M ., Treas . j K .

Sweny was then presented with a Past Mark Master's jewel , of the value of ten guineas , as a token of respect from the brethren and to mark their appreciation of his services during the past twelve months

while serving as W . M . of the lodge . He returned thanks and the lodge was closed . Among the other brethren present , besides those above enumerated , wcre Bros . C Coupland , P . M . 226 , and P . P . G . S . W . Kent ; W . Weston , P . M . 226 , and P . P . G . O . Kent ; R . Pidcock , P . M . 66 ; A . Penfold , W . M . 226 , and P . P . G . J . W . Kent ; D . C Capon , S . O . 226 , and P . P . G . Stwd . Kent ; W . Richey , 51 j G . Spinks , C .

Jolly , 226 ( Freemason ) , and others . A superb banquet , prepared by Bro . W . Moulder , of Station-road , Woolwich , was then partaken of by the brethren , who honoured the usual loyal toasts , and then the W . M . in flattering terms proposed " The Health of the Right Hon . Lord Henniker , Grand Master of England , the Earl of Kintore , D . G . M ., and the rest of the Grand Officers , " coupling the toast with the name of Bro . Dewar ,

who had so kindly attended and performed the installation ceremony that day . Bro . Dewar , who is exceedingly popular in this district , was received with cheers as he rose to reply . He said the toast was one he should have liked to have said a lot about , had time allowed , but as he had now only a few minutes to catch his train for town , he must cut his remarks down as much as possible . To their esteemed Grand Master he

was devoted , and simpl y so because it was a pleasure to serve under him . The love he had for the Orderj the energy he displayed for its prosperity , and above all thc ( courtesy he evinced to all who came in contact with him , made it a pleasure to serve under him , and he ( Bro . Dewar ) could only say that it was impossible for him in the short time he had at his disposal to tell them half their Grand Master ' s good

qualities . The Grand Officers were always most zealous for the good of Mark Masonry , and for himself , while thanking them for the cordial reception they always extended to him at the Florence Nightingale Lodge , he could assure them that anything he could do to assist them or the cause generally he should only be too happy to do at any time . He then retired from the hall with every demonstration of respect from the brethren . The next toast was that ot "The R . W . Bro . the Rev .

Thos . Robinson , M . A ., Provincial Grand Master of Kent , and the rest of the Grand Officers , Present and Past , " coupled with the name of Bro . Coupland , who in response pointed out the fact that he was only a Past Grand Officer , while Bro . Godwin was a Present Grand Officer . He would however not further challenge the W . M's call , but would gratefully return his most sincere thanks for the toast . He felt sure their worthy Grand Master would have been only

too glad to be present were it possible , and in his name he ( Bro . Coupland ) again thanked them . There was one thing he should like to bring before their notice and that was that at their Provincial Grand meetings the absence of many of the officers ( provincial ) of the Florence Nightingale Lodge was most conspicuous . He trusted to nave the pleasure of seeing the W . M . and some of the officers at the next meeting , and promised to give them a most

hospitable welcome should they attend . Bro . ; Godwin supposed that as a present Grand Officer it was his province to return thanks for the toast , and had two things to apologise for j in the first place for not doing so at once , and ncxt for not appearing in lodge in Grand Lodge clothing . Well the first he would at once make amends for , but the second was not his fault , for his tailor , who he was toldiwas a good Masonic tailor , had not got his

clothing ready . Then as to Bro . Coupland's remarks , he quite agreed with him as to the necessity of attending Grand Lodge , but under the peculiar circumstances of the case on the day he was to receive provincial honours , it was no more in his power to attend than to fly to York . But then he had asked Bro . Coupland to attend and accept the honour for him , and Bro . Coupland had done so , and he now thanked him for so doing . He should however

endeavour to do his duty as the knew all the rest of the Grand Officers did , and could only thank them cordially for the toast . The next toast was that of " The W . M ., " and in proposing it Bro . Sweny referred to the regret felt by every member of the lodge , especially their excellent W . M ., at the unfortunate illness of Bro . Donnelly . When that brother declined the office they unanimously elected Bro .

Sculley to fill the chair , and he , Bro . Sweny , felt sure that in him they had a Master who would not onl y add to the muster roll of the lodge , but keep up its prestige for good working and hospitality , and make it as it deserved to be a thoroughl y sound and prosperous one . Bro . Sculley thanked the brethren for their good wishes , and promised that nothing should be wanting on his part to cement the good feeling that existed in the lodge and make it worthy of its grand name , the Florence Nightingale .

J . Sculley , R . H . A ., P . P . G . I . G . Kent , was placed in the chair as W . M . for the ensuing twelve months , or until a successor shall have been duly installed in his place . Bro . Capt . J . J . Donelly , S . W ., and P . P . G . D . C . Kent , * was elected W . M ., but

retired on account of illness , and at a subsequent lodge of emergency Bro . Sculley , J . W ., was unanimously chosen in place of Bro . Donnelly , whose retirement was universally regretted by the brethren . Bro . D . Dewar , P . G . O ., G . A . Sec .

Sweny , I . P . M ., Treas . j K .

C . A . Solbe , B . A ., P . P . G . Chap . Kent , regretting inability to attend . Bro .
