After a substantial repast had been disposed of , "The Queen and the Craft , " and " H . R . H . the Prince of Wales , M . W . G . M . " were heartil y honoured . In proposing "The Grand Officers , " the CHAIRMAN said the presence of Bro . Everett P . G . Treas . showed

that although he had obtained a high position at the hands of the Craft , he was still one among them and would always do what he could for the advancement of Freemasonry . . They were also pleased that evening to see Bro . Pendlebury , Asst . G . Sec , who had worked worthily and well for many years in Freemasonry , and would also congratulate Bro . Capt . Walls on obtaining the position of G . Steward .

Presentation To Bro. S. Cochrane, Grand Treasurer.

Bro . GEO . EVERETT , P . G . Treas ., in response , said he was pleased to attend and support their good friend , the present G . Treas ., Bro . Cochrane . It recalled to his mind a similar honour done him , which would remain with him as long as he lived . With regard tc the Grand Officers , they were always ready and willing tc do what they could in the interests of Freemasonry .

Bro . A . A . PENDLEBURY , Asst . G . Sec , also briefly replied . The CHAIRMAN then said : Wehavemet to celebrate and congratulate our esteemed Bro . Sam . Cochrane , on his accession to the honourable office of Grand Treasurer of Grand Lodge . It must be a feeling of great gratification to any brother , who after a series of

years in Masonic service has found that his efforts have been appreciated , and he receives the reward he deserves . To my mind there is nothing more acceptable , more gratifying , or a higher ambition to aim at than Grand Treasurer of Grand Lodge . It is an office that can only be acquired by good Masonic service and good work to the Craft . It has been said by brethren on

many occasions that the office of G . Treasurer is one that ought not to be placed in the hands of the Craft , and that if it were by appointment it would be more acceptable to the brethren . I am glad to hear you say " No , " for I am of opinion that it is one of thQse privileges that the Craft ought to be particularly jealous about . We have met to congratulate

Bro . Cochrane on his honour , and there is no one more heartily rejoices than I do myself . He has been a good , hard-working , and zealous Mason . He is a Past Master of the Victoria Lodge , in which he was initiated—and I think that every Mason should pass the chair of his mother lodge—and there he distinguished himself very much . Then we have him in Fidelity Lodge , No . 3 ,

where he passed the chair , and where , I think , for many years he was a leading light . After that we find him in the formation of a new lodge , for he became the father and first W . M . of the Duke of Fife Lodge , and that has been a success . He has not only been active in Freemasonry , but he is a very great commercial man , and has undertaken the duties of one of the largest

livery companies . We shall find him in the next and following year Master of that very Worshipful Company—the Dyers . Notwithstanding his manifold duties , we find him undertaking the membership of the Board of General Purposes , which he occupied for three years , and distinguished himself as one of its most active members . We also find him on the

Finance and Premises Committees of that Board . Therefore , however , great an honour it is to be Grand Treasurer , he has earned it at the hands of the Craft , and I feel it a very great honour to be here to present to him on your behalf this testimonial as . 1 mark of our esteem . He is very zealous , and has not finished his duties yet , for he has started

a new chapter in connection with the Duke of Fife Lodge , and I should imagine it v .- ' . 11 be a great success . Therefore to-night 1 have the honour of presenting to him in your name the insignia of his office as a small token of the respect and esteem in which he is held by brethren in general . We have recorded here on vellum just a little souvenir of the occasion , I am pleased to

make this presentation , for he is a man we all love , and why ? Because he is so genial , so honest in his opinion , will always call a spade a spade , and will not go behind your back to say what he thinks . I hope for many years to meet him , to grasp his hand and say "Samuel Cochrane , I rejoice to meet you as a friend . " With all due sincerity and cordiality I propose " The Health

and Prosperity of Bro . Samuel Cochrane , our newlyelected Grand Treasurer . " The address , which was beautifully illuminated on vellum , has on the border the initials of Bro . Cochrane , the arms of Grand Lodge and of the lodges and chapters subscribing , and is in the following words : " This testimonial , together with the clothing and

insignia of Grand Treasurer of England , was presented to V . W . Bro . Samuel Cochrane by the Fidelity , Victoria , and Duke of Fife Lodges and Royal Arch Chapter , together with the Logic Club of Instruction , and supplemented by private contributions . The recipient of this testimonial for upwards of 20 years has taken an active part in Freemasonry . He has served

for some years on the Board of General Purposes and the Finance Committee of Grand Lodge , and has been an energetic and most liberal supporter of the three Masonic Institutions . His numerous friends trust he may be spared many years to extend his sphere of usefulness to the Craft of which he is so distinguished an ornament . May 12 th , 1893 . "

Bro . SAMUEL COCHRANE , G . Treas ., in response , said : You will excuse me if I follow the precedent of the Chairman and be brief , for a matter of this kind does not occur every day and the kindness of the brethren has rather upset my equilibrium . I believe it was Johnson who said , when somebody complimented him upon his many friends— " I have acquaintances

enough to fill a cathedral ; I could put my Iriends in a pulpit . " I could not put my friends in a pulpit . All present are personal friends of my own , and although pessimists say the world is becoming selfish , this gathering 1 think would give that story the lie . The brethren here are not present from selfish motives , but to honour me , and I accept it as such . Some years ago

I was induced to try and become a member of the Board of General Purposes , and it is then you find out who are your friends . I got in as a Master by the skin of my teeth , and after that I was elected second to Bro . Mulvey—who is always at the head of the poll and always will be , until we take him off . I have had the pleasure of serving for three years , and have always tried to do my best , but in getting there I have to

Presentation To Bro. S. Cochrane, Grand Treasurer.

thank the brethren round this table , because without their assistance I could not have done it . My advice to those who want to be elected is to try and make friends with the members round this board . I must refer to Bro . Stiles ; he did me one of the kindest acts a man cculd do . When we were in the middle of the fight he came , forward like a man , and retired in rnv

favour . Having said that , it is my duty to stand by him . There are now two worthy friends of mine in the field , but one was before the other , and I hope to live to see both in the position I occupy to-night , for two better men do not exist in Freemasonry . Now we come to the clothing . You have been kind enough to subscribe this , and I shall have the honour to wear

it soon . You have been told I call a spade a spade but that is my way . Sometimes I have offended by being too brusque , but for that I ask pardon , for I am a hasty man . I assure you that as long as God gives me power to draw the breath of life I will always value those round this table who have presented me with this clothing . I hope to be here again in 12

months' time , when we shall present clothing to one in this room . I feel very full , for when you have to respond for such things as I have to-night , you feel a great deal more than you have the power to say . I thank you from the bottom of my heart , and as long as I have breath I shall always value those who presented me with the clothing , and attended hereto-night .

In giving " The Chairman , " Bro . COCHRANE , Grand Treas ., referred to Bro . Lardner as a giant in Freemasonry , than whom they had no greater in the whole of London . He was a P . M . of three lodges , and P . Z . of five chapters , always willing to do the utmost he could for anyone . He ( Bro . Cochrane )| had the honour to take the chair at the presentation to Bro . Everett ,

and knew the difficulty in managing the whole of the details of such an affair . There had in this instance been a good Committee , and the Chairman had been assisted by Bro . Storr , who was a host in himself . Not only had the Chairman done his duty , but he was also Vice-President of all the Charities , and that was one of the greatest things to a Mason ' s credit .

Bro . H . J . LARDNER , P . P . G . D . C . Surrey , in response , said the Chairman had complimented him on taking the chair , but had any other brother present been asked , he would have done it equally well . No one had undertaken his task with greater pleasure than he had that night , and he sincerely hoped that before long they might meet on a similar Festival to present a similar set of clothing to one whom they all respected .

He thanked Bro . Cochrane for the kind manner in which he had proposed the toast , and the brethren for their cordial reception . If he could be of any service to Freemasonry or to the brethren , his services were always at their disposal . l The CHAIRMAN next gave "The Vice-Presidents , " and said he regarded it as a special compliment that two such brethren had assisted him as Bros . Felton

and Stephens . Bro . Felton was occupied in important matters in the City , and had been elected one of the Committee of the City Parochial Charities . In Bro . Stephens they had a brother who subscribed to the Charities , and not content with that , his wife was a great promoter of the Institutions , and at the Benevolent Institution Festival headed the list .

Bro . FELTON , P . M ., replied , and was followed by Bro . J . STEPHENS , P . M ., who said he was present tc do honour to one of his dearest friends , in the person of Bro . Cochrane . Bro . W . A . SCURRAH , P . P . G . S . of W . Middx ., then submitted "The Visitors" in a cordial manner , and the toast was acknowledged by Bros . J . PAIN , P . M .

1336 , and J . IRVINE , P . M . Bro . Capt . T . C . WALLS , G . Stwd ., responding for " The Treasurer , Secretary , and Committee , " said the Chairman was one of his oldest friends in Masonry . He had thrown his whole heart and soul into this matter . He had the pleasure of seeing Bro . Cochrane exalted in Royal Arch Masonry , and from that time

they had been in accord . They had done their best to make this affair a success . It had not gone forth to the world asking for money , but they owed a great deal to Bro . Storr , to whom the success was due . During the last 30 years he ( Bro . Walls ) had been connected with many testimonials , but he had never worked so well and so thoroughly as he had on the

present occasion . Bro . E . STORR , P . M ., said he felt they had one object in view , which was to do honour to Bro . Cochrane . He sincerely trusted that brother would live to wear the clothing out . They must look upon this as a repre ^ sentative meeting for there were many lodges

represented . He thanked the Chairman for his kind remarks and also for kindly thinking he had fulfilled their wishes in carrying out the duties of Hon . Sec . _ Bros . W . A . SCURRAH , P . P . G . S . of Wks ., and E . t . MULVEV , P . P . G . S . B ., also responded , after which the proceedings terminated . Bro . H . Stiles rendered valuable assistance during

the evening by presiding at the pianoforte . The clothing and jewels were manufactured by " George Kenning .

years in Masonic service has found that his efforts have been appreciated , and he receives the reward he deserves .

I have had the pleasure of serving for three years , and have always tried to do my best , but in getting there I have to

thank the brethren round this table , because without their assistance I could not have done it .
