CALENDAR FOR THE PROVINCE OF WEST YORKSHIRE , 18 S 7 . This laborious compilation is printed on a folded sheet , and must prove especially useful to the members of the 6 9 lodges , 38 chapters , nine Mark lodges , eight preceptories , and three Rose Croix chapters , duly referred to in the

elaborate tables , vvhich furnish not only the numbers , names , places of meeting ( days and time ) , & c , but also the days of months throughout the year in which all these bodies assemble ! There are 3260 subscribing members to the lodges ( an average of over 47 to each lodge ) , 1139 to the chapters of the Royal Arch ( some omitted ) , 298 Mark Masons , and 152 Knights Templars . We should like to suggest , if we may , that if folded , sewn , and pages cut ,

the calendar vvould prove still more useful and handy for reference . Anyway , we congratulate Bro . Herbert G . E . Green , the Prov . G . Sec , on another issue of his excellent multum in parvo calendar . THE LANCASTER MASONIC CALENDAR FOR 1 S 87 .

This very neat and compact publication by Bro . H . Longman is gradually being improved , and for the present year , is ahead of its predecessors , though mainly edited on the lines laid down by the editor in 1886 . The " Masonic Notes" are exceedingly interesting , and contain quite a number of facts respecting the Lancaster Craft , & c , from 1789 . According to Bro . Lane ' s "Masonic Records , "

Ar00700

however , there were numerous removals of the lodge , between its localisation at the "Golden Shovel" in 1787 , vvhen it was warranted , and the change to the rooms in Sun Street in 1 S 24 , recorded by Bro . Longman , and so re alterations in the places of meeting after the latter year . We presume there vvas an error in the numbering of the original warrant , issued by Provincial authority , as it is

given in the calendar as 559 . Bro . John Lane notes this fact , but does not explain the cause of the discrepancy . The correct number is 575 . As , however , the charter bears date 13 th November , 17 S 9 , though it follows a lodge of 9 th October , 1790 , vve fancy that the local authority must have assumed the number of the lodge to be 559 , without consulting the Grand Secretary . We wonder if the minutes

of No . 2 S 1 ( Lodge of Fortitude ) throw any light on this subject , as it is singular , to say the least , for a Provincial warrant , undoubtedly legal as it vvas in those days , should bear a number . The Royal Masonic Institution for Girls was instituted in 17 SS , not 177 S , be it observed . The brief sketches of our Institutions in the calendar are wellarranged , as , indeed , the text is generally .

WILTSHIRE MASONIC CALENDAR , 1887 . The painstaking Editor of the Masonic Calendar for Wilts may now say that " We are seven " for the present issue is the seventh of the series . It is also the best of the set , because the most complete , though that of 18 SG makes a good second . Bro . William Nott begins vvith the list of Past Prov . Grand Officers , where Bro . F . H . Goldney

leaves off , in his admirable history of the province . The latter work should be ^ reprinted in a less expensive form , and brought down to the present year , so that the brethren in Wilts may have another opportunity of obtaining copies of that interesting volume . There are ten lodges , five Royal Arch Chapters , and one Mark Lodge in the province , vvith 4 C 4 , 119 , and 32 members respectively . A list

of Stewards is given from 1870 , with the amounts obtained by each tor the Central Masonic Charities , making a grand total of which any province might well be proud . The report of the " Provincial Benevolent Fund and Charity Organization , " of which Bro . Nott is the energetic Secretary , makes good reading and proves how much good can be done by a correct system , hearty co-operation and well

sustained enthusiasm . The only suggestion we desire to make is that the by-laws of the province may be given in some future edition , as then they will be printed in a handy form for reference . The Editor ( liro . William Nott , of High-street , Devizes ) , desires to thank his brother editors for copies of their publication during the past year , and is

anxious to continue to thus exchange , so that each may be aware of what the others are doing . This is an excellent plan , suggested and adopted by Bro . Hughan , we believe , many years ago , and now generally followed , as it deserves to be . We note that the Calendar for Wilts is nearly selfsupporting . So much the better .

FREEMASONS' CALENDAR AND DIRECTORY FOR THE PROVINCE OF LEICESTERSHIRE AND RUTLAND , 1887 . This issue is the fifteenth of the series , and in no way inferior to its numerous predecessors . Of late years these Calendars have become "better and better , " until when 1886 arrived , Bro . S . S . Partridge introduced as a

frontispiece a portrait of the Provincial Grand Master , and so completely arranged the various tables and returns of lodges , Sic , that perfection vvas obtained . To the regret of the province , however , he has retired from active participation in the editorial duties , and is now succeeded by Bro . B . A . Smith , P . M . 5 23 , who has ably edited the edition for 1887 'n such a way that no one could have told of

the change had it not been announced on the title page . Bro . Smith has wisely given as the chief attraction an excellent portrait of the veteran Mason , the R . W . Bro . W . Kelly , P . P . G . M ., who is well described as the " Father of the Province . " This capital photo will be much valued by . Bro . Kelly ' s numerous admirers , vvho are always delighted when any honour is paid to their beloved and respected

brother , whose energies are still devoted to the interests of the Craft whenever and wherever needed , and vvho will , we trust , be long on " active service . " "The days of meeting ' of lodges and other Masonic bodies in the province " is a useful compilation , and is an addition of this year . " The Masonic Notes , " & c , by the Provincial Grand Secretary are considerably extended this time , and are an excellent

aid to Masters and Secretaries of lodges . They are the best of the kind we know of , and should be adopted by other provinces , so as to inform brethren as to their chief duties vvhen holding responsible offices in lodges . There are 12 lodges in the provinces , vvith 542 members , or an average of 45 , the minimum being 21 and the maximum 78 . There are live R . A . chapters and 10 Mark lodges . The

large number of the latter is due to the fact that Bro . W . Kelly , as Provincial Grand Master , rules a large province , the jurisdiction including the counties of Leicester , Northampton , Derby , and Rutland . " The table of contributions ¦ to the Central Masonic Charities , " both local and general ,

for the last five years , inclusive of the Board of Benevolence , is a most interesting one . The list of votes exhibits a grand total of 1100 , being an increase of 63 as compared with the issue of 1886 . Bro . B . A . Smith states his willingness to consider any suggestions for improving the Calendar , but vve fancy he will wait for them in vain .

THE CANADIAN FREEMASONS' POCKET BOOK , DIARY , AND CALENDAR , FOR THE YEAR 1 . 887 . This is a remarkable , compact , and comprehensive Pocket Book for the Canadian Craftsmen , forming as it does a complete Directory for all the Grand Lodges in the Dominion of Canada , as well as for the other Masonic

Degrees worked in the various Provinces of Ontario , Quebec , Nova Scotia , New Brunswick , Manitoba , Prince Edward Island , and British Columbia . Numerous particulars arc given respecting the Grand Lodges and Chapters in England , Ireland , Scotland , Germany , United States , and others , thus rendering the Calendar a veritable ¦ multu-m in parvo , and indispensible to all zealous and

intelligent brethren in the Dominion of Canada , as well as most useful to the Fraternity in other parts of the great Continent of America . We wish vve could speak as favourable of the Frontispiece , as we can most conscientiously do of the text , but that vve cannot do . The portrait of M . W . Bro . Henry Robertson , LL . B ., Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Canada , is little else than a caricature . The lists of Lodges , Chapters , and other Bodies have been
