ROYAL MASONIC INSTITUTION FOR GIRLS .

A Special General Court of the Governors and Subscribers of the Royal Masonic Institution for Girls was held on Saturday , at Freemasons' Hall . Bro . Lieut .-Col . Creaton , Graud Treasurer , in the chair . There were also present Bros . Rev . A . F . A . Woodford , E . Letchworth , F . Richardson , Arthur E . Gladwell , A . H . Tattershall , H . A . Dubois , C . H . Webb , J .

Mason , and W . Hopekirk . Bro . FRANK R ICHARDSON , P . G . D ., moved : "That the report of the House Committee as to tha sanitary state of the School buildings , presented lo the General Committee on thc 25 th May , 1 SS 2 , be received and adopted ,

and that the matter be referred back to thc House Committee to carry out , at an expense not exceeding £ 1300 . " He teferred to the bad sanitary condition of the buildings , and stated that this could bc remedied during the holidays .

Bro . the Rev . A . F . A . WOODFORD , in seconding the motion , said that the state of the schools was serious , and the principle of sanitation in its best

form should be applied to them . Bro . J . S . PIERCE thought £ 1300 was a large sum for thc purpose . Bro . R ICHARDSON replied that the sanitary condition of the schools had been reported on , and that the sum set down for the work was £ 1300 .

A nearly similar report had been made by Dr . Corfield and Mr . Mark H . Judge , R . I . B . A ., on behalf of thc Sanitary Assurance Association . The resolution was carried . Resolutions were afterwards passed appointing Bro . Dr . Hope , of

Curzonstreet , Mayfair , Senior Physician to the Belgrave Hospital . for Children , to the post of Honorary Physician to the Institution ; and awarding a gratuity of £ 25 , to senior-clerk , Bro . W . G . Weber , on leaving the office in consequence of ill-health , to assist in defraying the expenses of his journey to Australia .

The General Committee met on Wednesday , at Freemasons Hall . Bro . Colonel Creaton , who was called to thc chair , was supported by a large attendance of brethren , among whom were—Bros . Col . J . Creaton , A . H . Tattershall , J . H . Leggott , Frederick Adlard , J . R . Gallant , Julius Quitmann , T . W . C . Bush , VV . H . Goodall , Edgar Bowyer , Raynham W . Stewart , C . Jno . Percival , Wm . Clarke , W . J . Murlis , Wm . Stephens , James Brett , G . Bolton , G . L . Moore , J . A . Farnfield , R . R . Tate , John M . Stedwell , H . Cox , J . Moon , Thoma ' s Cubitt , and E . C . Massey ( Freemason ) .

When the minutes of last meeting ( 10 th May ) had been read and confirmed , the S ECRETARY reported the names of ten brethren nominated by the Grand Mastcr , and the ten elected by Grand Lodge to serve on the Committee of Management . The following brethren were then elected to represent the subscribers on thc said Committee : Bros . Adlard , Bulmer , Dilley , Goode , Hale , Hilton , Ouitmann , Stean , Stephens , and Stewart .

A brother said that his attention had been called to the fact that Bro . Atkins ' s name had been withdrawn , and inquired if the Secretary could furnish any exp lanation of the circumstance . Bro . Terry relied lhat the member referred to had not attended once upon the Audit Committee , and it was supposed therefore that he did not take sufficient interesl in the proceedings to warrant his re-election .

The S ECRETARY reported that Bro . Col . Creaton s motion for a iirant of £ 70 , for a supply of coals to the inmates of the Institution during the winter months had been carried in Grand Lodge at lhe last Quarterly

Communication . The S ECRETARY reported that one annuitant had died since the last election took place , and that the vacancy would be filled by adding Bro . E . Gregory to the list of annuitants . The list of successful candidates at the last election was taken as read , and the chdrman was authorised to sign cheques for accounts payable .

The S ECRETARY reported that there was a balance of ^ 4800 , on the current account at the bankers , and as no considerable sums would have to be paid till the latler part of August , it was resolved to place a sum of ^ 2500 on deposit account at call . The S ECRETARY read the following letter , addressed to him b y Bro , R . R . Davis , Hon . Secretary of the "John Hervey Memorial Fund : "

Melville Lodge , Wellington , 12 th June . 1 SS 2 . " John Hervey Memorial Fund , " and "John Hervey Benefactions . " Dear Sir and Brother . — Upon the occasion of the recent elections of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution a cheque for £ 20 13 s . id . was handed to you to be divided among the four highest unsuccessful candidates ( two male and two female ) .

As it appears to be desirable that some formal record of the transaction should be entered in the books of your Institution , 1 now send you a short account of the origin of the "John Hervey Memorial Fund , " and the purpose to which it is intended to apply the income arising therefrom , under the name of " John Hervey Benefactions . " On the death of the late Bro . John Hervey , Past G . S . and G . S . E ., it was felt by several of his old friends that it would be a graceful and becoming act on the part of

those who had been associated with him to commemorate in some fitting and permanent manner his unceasing endeavours for a period of nearly forty years to promote the interests and to extend the usefulness of our Order . With this object in view , a provisional committee was formed , consisting of five members of the late Bro . Hcrvey ' s mother lodge ( the Royal York , No . 7 ) , and five members of the Lodge of Unions , No . 256 , which he joined shortly after his initiation

into Masonry . Bro . Hervey continued a subscribing member of both these lodges until his death—a period of upwards of thirty-six years—and was thrice elected to the chair of each of them . Bro . Sir John B . Monckton , F . S . A ., P . G . D ., President of the Board of General Purnoses , was invited , and most cheerfully and readily undertook to act as Chairman .

At a meetingof the Committee on the 2 Sth 1 'ebruary , 1 SS 1 , it was resolved to augment the Committee by inviting eight distinguished Present and Past Grand Officers to join it . These brethren all willingly consented to do so , and I enclose herewith a list of the names of thc Committee as then constituted—nineteen membeis , including myself —while I undertook to perform the duties o £ Honorary Secretary .

Circulars were addressed to the various lodges and Royal Arch Chapters throughout England and Wales , soliciting donations . The Committee in their circular of March , 1 SS 1 , stated that it was intended to invest contributions in the Government Funds in the names of Bro . Sir John B . Monckton ( Chairman of the Committee ); Bro . Thomas Fenn , P . G . D . ( Treasurer of the Emulation Lodgeof Improvement ); Bro . Charles A . Murton , P . G . D . ( P . M . Royal ( York Lodge , No . 7 ) ; and Bro . Reuben R . Davis , P . M . 25 C ( Hon . Sec . of the Committee ); and to

give the annual dividends in such sums as might be thought advisable to the highest unsuccessful candidates , male and female , at the yearly elections of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution , such donations to be known as the "John Hervey Benefactions . " The appeal thus made has met with such a response as to enable the Committee already to invest £ Soo in the purchase of £ 804 is . iod . New Three Per Cent . Stock in the names of the four brethren already mentioned , and the cheque for £ 20 13 s . id . to

which I referred at the commencement of this letter , represents the amount of the dividends which became due , and were received in April of the present year . It is not intended to close the subscription list before the end of the year , and I trust that the amount of the donations may be considerably increased by that time . The SECRETARY read a report by Bro . Rajmham Stewart as to the result of the opposition offered by the Institution , through his firm , to the Bills of L . B . and S . Co . Railway , and other railway companies for local lines , now before Parliament , which report showed that the railway companies had offered terms which were considered acceptable , and had been accepted ; one result being that the companies had agreed to defray the expenses of the Institution ' s opposition , so that they had secured an advantageous settlement without cost to the Institution .

Bro . FARNFIELD moved that the report be received , and that the thanks of the meeting be given to Bro . Stewart , and the motion having been seconded , was put to the vole and carried . An estimate from Mr . Griggs for £ 16 5 ios . for alterations to the fabric of the building at Croydon , rendered necessary by damage done by recent heavy gales of wind , and for the repair of all the stonework , was submitted , and after some discussion it was agreed that tenders should also be invited from Mr . Anley , Mr . Cowland , and Messrs . Bowyer Bros ., and that when this

had been done the matter should be left to the House Committee to decide which tender should be accepted , and to see the work put in hand . The following brethren were elected members of the Finance Committee : Bros . Hale , Tattershall , Wm . Stephens , Bulmer , and Murlis . The following members were elected members of the House Committee Bros . R . VV . Stewart , Farnfield , Percival , Cubitt , and Bowyer . It was resolved to authorise the annual entertainment to the inmates to be given at the Institution at Croydon , and that the expense be defrayed by the Institution .

Eight petitions were presented by decayed Freemasons , seven of which , upon consideration , were approved , and the names ordered to be added to the list of candidates . Two petitions of the widows of Freemasons were considered , both of which were approved , and the names ordered to be added to the list of candidates . A vote of thanks lo the Chairman closed the proceedings .

On Monday night the New Royal Arch Chapter in connection with thc Landport Lodge , No . 1776 , was constituted amidst a very large number of companions in the beautiful lodge room of the Masonic Club , Commercialroad , Landport . The SECRETARY read a report by Bro . Rajmham Stewart as to the result of the opposition offered by the Institution , through his firm , to the Bills of L . B . and S . Co . Railway , and other railway companies for local lines , now before Parliament , which report showed that the railway companies had offered terms which were considered acceptable , and had been accepted ; one result being that the companies had agreed to defray the expenses of the Institution ' s opposition , so that they had secured an advantageous settlement without cost to the Institution .

Bro . FARNFIELD moved that the report be received , and that the thanks of the meeting be given to Bro . Stewart , and the motion having been seconded , was put to the vole and carried . An estimate from Mr . Griggs for £ 16 5 ios . for alterations to the fabric of the building at Croydon , rendered necessary by damage done by recent heavy gales of wind , and for the repair of all the stonework , was submitted , and after some discussion it was agreed that tenders should also be invited from Mr . Anley , Mr . Cowland , and Messrs . Bowyer Bros ., and that when this

had been done the matter should be left to the House Committee to decide which tender should be accepted , and to see the work put in hand . The following brethren were elected members of the Finance Committee : Bros . Hale , Tattershall , Wm . Stephens , Bulmer , and Murlis . The following members were elected members of the House Committee Bros . R . VV . Stewart , Farnfield , Percival , Cubitt , and Bowyer . It was resolved to authorise the annual entertainment to the inmates to be given at the Institution at Croydon , and that the expense be defrayed by the Institution .

Eight petitions were presented by decayed Freemasons , seven of which , upon consideration , were approved , and the names ordered to be added to the list of candidates . Two petitions of the widows of Freemasons were considered , both of which were approved , and the names ordered to be added to the list of candidates . A vote of thanks lo the Chairman closed the proceedings .
