The newly-installed W . M . then invested the following brethren as his officers : Bros . G . Sturman , S . W . ; A . Murtrie , J . W . ; W . A . Rogers , P . M ., Treas . ; C . A . Woodbridge , Sec . ; Dr . Gowan , S . D . ; Mansfield , J . D . ;
Blackburn , I . G . ; and Middleton , Tyler . The lodge was then closed , and the members of the lodge had their photographs taken . After the brethren had done ample justice to a capital banquet , The Worshipful Master gave " The Queen and the Craft , " and , in doing so , said the loyalty of Middlesex was
proverbial . The toast of "The Prince of Wales , M . W . G . M ., " was heartily received . In giving the toast of " The Right Hon . the Earl of Lathom , D . G . M ., and the rest of the Grand Officers , Present and Past , " the W . M . said the toast bore a certain amount of discomfort with it , inasmuch as they were in
mourning for their Pro Grand Master . In speaking of him , nothing could be said to add to the value he was to the Craft . Referring to the Earl of Lathom and the other Grand Officers , the W . M . said they were the best of officers . The next toast was "The Prov . G . M ., Bro . Lieut .-Col . Sir Francis Burdett , Bart ., the D . P . G . M ., and the rest of the Prov . Grand Officers , Present and Past . " The
W . M ., in giving the toast , said , with regard to Sir Francis Burdett , they knew what a dear old friend he was . They knew the many benefits they had received from him , and , in his absence , they had the D . P . G . M . He thanked him for coming amongst them . He asked them to be upstanding to drink to his health , and he wished him to convey to the Provincial Grand Master their regard and esteem .
Bro . Thrupp , in responding , said it was a very great pleasure for him to be present on that occasion after so manyyears of absence . They knew that in the Province of Middlesex there were some 47 or 4 S lodges besides chapters , and it was simply impossible for him to attend them all regularly . He worked very hard to support the Provincial Grand Master . Whenever Sir Francis Burdett
went into the province he always had the right hand of fellowship not only for the Master but also for the youngest Freemason in the lodge . He certainly would , on the next occasion , carry to him the assurances the W . M . had made that ni ght how much he was respected in Great Stanmore . As far as he was personally concerned he could assure them it was a great pleasure to come among them
and to see the Abercorn Lodge was prospering . They must support the W . M . if they wanted to make the lodge a success , and all the officers must be perfect in their work . They had installed a most excellent old Mason , one whom he was sure had the welfare of the Abercorn Lodge at heart as much as any other member of the lodge . They must do all they could to make the present year the most
prosperous and the most harmonious ever known in the lodge . He must remind the brethren that next year was the coming of age of the Middlesex Province , and he hoped they would be ready to support the Provincial Grand Master to make it a grand jubilee in the province . On behalf of the Provincial Grand Officers , he returned them his hearty thanks .
In proposing the toast of " The Worshipful Master , " the l . P . M . said he had known the VV . M . personally a great many years . If ever there was a gap to fill , Bro . Veal was always ready to fill it . He was certain that the future of the Abercorn Lodge was perfectly safe in his hands . He
hoped he would drill his officers , and if he succeeded in that he and the lodge would have something to be extremely proud of . He wished him every success in his year of office . The lodge had always been harmonious and always fairly prosperous , but this year he hoped it would be more prosperous and more harmonious than ever .
_ Bro . Veal , in his reply , said he knew not how to sufficiently thank the brethren for the manner they had drunk his health . He hoped during the year they should have lodges of instruction , and that it would be a question of pulling well together . It was not right to the Past Masters that some of the brethren should come and some should not . There would be nothing lost during the coming year ,
and at the end of the year he hoped they would show that success which the Deputy Provincial Grand Master had wished them . The next toast , that of "The Visitors , " was proposed by the W . M . He alluded to the presence of three or four brethren , members of the Dobie Lodge , who had come all the way from Kingston-on-Thames . He took it as a great
compliment that they should come that distance to see him installed . He hoped the brethren would drink the health of the visitors , and say that they were very glad to see them and welcome them . Several brethren responded . The toast of " The Past Masters " was the next on the list , and the W . M ., in proposing it , said that through Bro . Soames absence in the lodge they were unable to present
him with the Past Master ' s jewel which they had voted him . On the minutes they mentioned that it was not only passed unanimously , but also with a vote of sympathy with him for the infliction he was suffering from . They sympathised with him thoroughly , and thanked him for what he had done for the lodge . He had very much pleasure in placing the Past Master ' s jewel on his breast . Referring to the Past Masters as a body , the W . M . said they could not do much without them .
Bro . Soames , in reply , said he had always endeavoured to do his work as well as he possibly could under the circumstances , and he thanked them for appreciating the fact . Whenever he had come into the lodge he had been treated with the greatest possible kindness .

YORK . York Lodge ( No . 236 ) . — -At a special meeting of this lodge , held on the 5 th inst . at the Masonic Hall , Duncombe-place , the business was the election of trustees . Bros . C . M . Forbes , W . M ., was in the chair , supported by the following officers : Bros . H . L . Swift , acting S . W . ; E . VV . Purnell , J . W . ; \ V . E . Sampson , S . D . ; H . Churchill
J . D . ; Jos . Todd , P . M ., Treas . ; C . Linley , D . C . ; M . Brvson , I . G . ; T . G . Hodgson , acting Org . ; and H . Foster , P . M ., Sec . There were also present the following P . M . 's Bros . Win . Lawton , P . P . G . R . ; J . S . Rymer , P . P . G . S . R . ; Geo . Balmford , P . P . G . O . ; Geo . Kirby , P . P . G . D . C . ; Geo . Garbutt , P . P . S . G . D . ; T . G . Hodgson , P . P . S . G . D . ; VV Draper , and H . Foster . The members present were Bros .
I . Biscomb , M . D . Jefferson , T . Russell , A . G . W . " Procter , T . W . VVilson , S . Crummack , and W . N . Stimpson . The lodge having been opened in the First Degree , the Secretary read a circular convening the meeting of the lodge to the effect that the lodge was called t"gether to elect and choose " as many trustees as will make up the number of ten trustees out of the subscribing
members of the said lodge in accordance with the provisions of the deed of conveyance of the lodg-e premises bearing date , iSth February , 1 S 63 . " Bro . Lawton , in moving names which follow , explained that in consequence of the death of Bro . Hollon , to whom the lodge had been so much indebted , and also in consequence of the voluntary resignation of Bro . VV . B . Richardson , who had
expressed his conviction that younger men should be appointed to trusteeship , it became necessary , owing to the conditions of the trust , that , when the elected 10 trustees were reduced to three , the required full number of trustees should be appointed . There were eight trustees now required . At an informal meeting of Past Masters it had been resolved to submit names for election . Bro . Russell
interposed with the desire that the clause in the deed relating to the appointment of trustees should be read , and , this having been done , Bro . Russell inquired who were the present surviving trustees ?—the W . M ., Bro . Sir Jas . Meek , and Bro . Lawton . After some further conversation , Bro . Lawton proposed the following for election as trustees : Bros . Todd , Buckle , Rooke , Rymer , Kirby , Garbutt , Sir
Joseph Terry , and John Biscomb . Bro . Draper seconded the motion . Bro . Russell proposed that the vote be taken by scroll . Bro . Rymer considered that there was no need for this as they had only to propose additional names to those now before them and vote as they thought fit . Bro . Crummack proposed that the names be dealt with separately , and the Secretary seconded this , Bro . Crummack
adding that , although the brethren had great respect for the names proposed , it would be much better if a further list was before them . Bro . Rymer objected to taking the names separately . He would prefer a fresh list . Bro . Russell then proposed the following : Bros . Rooke , P . M . ; Border , P . M . ; Rymer , P . M . ; Foster , P . M . ; Forbes , W . M . ; Sir Jos . Terry , Geo . Seller , John Biscomb , and
T . J . Russell . This having been seconded , it was resolved , on the motion of Bro . Rymer , seconded by Bro . Russell , that Bros . Purnell , Bryson , and Linley be appointed Scrutineers of the scroll voting . Bro . Linley observed that in the formation of a new trust it was very important to select young men . In the list before them he found the names of men far advanced in life , and , in the ordinary course of
nature , their places would become vacant . It would be encouraging to young men if they were placed in the honourable position of trustees . He spoke the more freely because he felt that from his own age he was " out of the running . " The Secretary read the lists of the names before the lodge , and the W . M . ( Bro . Forbes ) said he wished to withdraw . He did not agree with Bro . Linley's remarks .
He felt that in a matter of trusteeship they ought to leave it in the hands of Past Masters . The scroll having taken place , the work of the counting followed in the ante-room . During the interval Bro . Rymer proposed hearty thanks to Bro Lawton for taking care of the lodge deed since 1 S 71 , and , on their brother resigning it to their keeping , he proposed it be placed in their iron safe . Bro .
J . Todd seconded the vote of thanks and referred to the deep interest that Bro . Lawton had for many years displayed in Masonry . The resolution was adopted unanimously . Bro . Lawton , in acknowledging the vote of thanks , expressed his deep interest in the welfare of the lodge , and assured them that he should , as long as he lived , continue a subscriber to it . The deed was then
handed to Bro . Todd , treasurer . Subsequently it was resolved , on the motion of Bro . Todd , seconded by Bru . G . Kirby , that the necessary authority be given the trustees for the disposal of the deed , and that Bro . Swift be instructed accordingly . The result of the voting for the trusteeship was as follows , the W . M . declaring the brethren " elected with a clear majority in each case , " according to
the report of the Scrutineers : Bros . | . Biscomb , S . Border ( P . G . R . ) , Geo . Garbutt , Geo . Kirby , M . Rooke , J . S . Rymer , Sir J . Terry , and Jos . Todd . On the motion of Bro . Lawton , seconded by Bro . Rymer , a vote of thanks was passed to the Scrutineers , and Bro . Purnell acknowedged the compliment . The lodge was then closed . ?
The official concession of Heligoland to the representatives of the German Emperor took place on Saturday last . The ceremony was very simple . Governor Barkley , L . M . G ., read the articles of the Anglo-German convention relating to it , and the German officials took possession , the English and German flags Hying side by side till the departure of the
last of the English Governors . Mr . Barkley was entertained at a banquet previous to leaving , and on his way to embark on the Calypso , both he and Mrs . Barkley were enthusiastically cheered by the Heligolanders . On Sunday the Emperor William landed and inspected this latest addition to his empire , the inhabitants receiving his Majesty right loyally .
