ANNUAL OUTING OF THE MARQUESS OF RIPON LODGE , No . 1379 .

On the 26 th ult . the members of this lodge , accompanied by ladies , had an excursion to Malton , under the presidency of Bro . Dr . Hill Drury , W . M . The party left Darlington in a saloon carriage by an early train , arriving at Malton at half-past ten , when brakes were in readiness to take them to Castle Howard , the

magnificent seat of the Earl of Carlisle . After a p leasant drive along the country roads , and through the beautifully wooded park , with its stately avenues of trees , the castle was reached . The palatial pile , built by Sir John Vanbrugh , in 1702 , near a picturesque lake , is after the style , but smaller , of Blenheim , also built

by Vanbrugh . It is one of the grandest and richest country seats in England . The party were then conducted over the castle , which contains a large collection of art treasures by Bellini , Bol , Canaletti , Holbein , Rubens , Salvator Rosa , Sir J . Reynolds , Tintoretto , Vandyck , and worthy of especial note , the celebrated pictures— "The Adoration of the Kings , " by Mabuse ,

and The Three Mary ' s , " by Carracci . The beautiful domestic chapel which has been renewed and decorated , brought the visit to the castle to a close , and , after an inspection of the gardens , the party returned to the Malton Hotel to dinner . A most enjoyable day was spent , the memory of which will not be soon effaced .

A Masonic Welcome To Bro. Toole.

A MASONIC WELCOME TO BRO . TOOLE .

Bro . J . L . Toole was entertained at luncheon on the 20 th June , at the New Masonic Hall , at Sydney , New South Wales , by Bro . Dr . Tarrant , Pro Grand Master of New South Wales , nearly the whole of the Grand Officers being present by Bro . Dr . Tarrant ' s invitation .

Among the other guests , besides Bro . Toole , were the Mayor of Sydney ( Bro . Sydney Burdekin ) , Bro . Billington , and Bro . George Rignold . Bro . Dr . TARRANT , who presided as host , having the brethren named seated on either side of him , proposed " The Health of Bro . Toole , " and gave him a hearty

and cordial welcome . He had only invited the Grand Lodge Officers to meet him , for it he had invited the whole Craft he did not know how many thousands would have come . But those present were representative men , and were supposed to form the Parliament of Masonry in New South Wales . As a representative body , they could , in the name of Masonry , give Bro .

A Masonic Welcome To Bro. Toole.

Toole a hearty welcome to those shores . He wished him long life , happiness , and prosperity , and wished to couple the name of Bro . Billington with the toast . Bro . TOOLE , in responding , thanked them for their very hearty welcome . He was able to attend lodge but seldom , owing to his having to preach sermons

every evening . The grippe was very prevalent when he left London . He had escaped it there , but had come in for a very warm grip when he met the Masons of Sydney . His health had been drunk so often since he came there that he ought to be the healthiest fellow in the land . He thought after he got home to London

he would come back and see them every 20 years . Bro . BILLINGTON , in responding , said though he could not make as good a speech as his Bro . Toole , he was an equally bad Mason . " The Health of the Mayor of Sydney and of Bro George Rignold" were also given and acknowledged .

Past Grand Master Bro . H . P . H . Bromwell , of Illinois , delivered addresses . The Temple Fund began with the small sum of S 360 , in 18 73 , and reached the large sum or $ 475 , 000 . The cost of the temple and furniture was § 250 , 000 , and of the lots on which it is erected , $ 225 , 000 . Our Colorado brethren have every reason to be proud of their home for the Craft .

BRO . ROBERT COLLIER , P . M .

We regret to announce the death on the 1 st inst . of Bro . Robert Collier , P . M ., & c , at the advanced age of 92 . Our deceased brother was initiated in the Lodge of Loyalty , No . 320 , Mottram , on the 5 th December , 1821 , being at the time 23 years of age , and was installed as Worshipful Master in 18 37 and again in 1848 .

From 1850 to 1859 inclusive he was annuall y elected Treasurer , and from i 860 till the present date had served as Tyler , the number of years in which he had held office of one kind or another in his lodge being 51 . He was exalted to the Royal Arch Degree on the 19 th March , 1823 , in the Chapter of Integrity , No . 320 , and

here also served many and various offices in the course of his long career . He was also a Mark Mason , being a member of the local lodge of that Degree . His funeral took place at Mottram on the 5 th inst ., his remains being followed to their last resting place by a

large number of his brethren and companions , who take this opportunity of testifying their respect for a worth y Mason . Bro . Collier was the oldest Freemason in Cheshire , and there are living but few members of our Society who can boast of having been connected with it for a longer period .

BRO . HAROLD KING , P . G . D . It is not very long since we noted in connection with the proceedings , on 31 st March last , of the District Grand Lodge of Bombay the resignation of Bro . Harold King , P . G . D . of England , as Deputy District Grand Master of Bombay , and his installation of Bro . Barrow as his successor ; nor had we at the time the

slightest idea that after so short an interval the sad duty would devolve on us of recording his death . Bro King resigned office not on account of his health , or because of old age , but merely that he might spend a few months in England . He was , indeed , on the return voyage to Bombay , when at or near Aden he was seized

with heat apoplexy , was landed , died , and was buried , so that the steamer that should have conveyed him to Bombay , conveyed instead the unexpected news of his death . He was only about 3 8 years of age , but had long enjoyed a reputation as a good man of businesshe was head of the Bombay branch of the firm of H

S . King and Co ., of Cornhill and Pall Mall—had occupied one of the Government seats on the Municipal Corporation of Bombay , was a keen sportsman , very popular with all classes of the communit y in which he had resided for the last eight years , and what concerns us more immediately , —a distinguished Mason ,

hie was initiated in this country , and , on joining the Calcutta branch of his firm , became a District Grand Officer in Bombay . He arrived in Bombay in 1882 , and having at once become a joining member of the St . George ' s Lodge and the Lodge of Concord , was elected , and , by special dispensation , was permitted to

preside as W . M . of them both in the same year . After serving as District Grand Treasurer for about 18 months , he was appointed firstly District S . G . W . by the late Bro . E . Tyrrell Leath , Dist . Grand Master , and shortly afterwards his Deputy Dist . G . M . He had the honour of installing the Duke of Connaught in

office as Dist . Grand Master of Bombay , and was continued in the office of Deputy by his Royal Highness till quite recently , when he resigned in order that he might visit England . In the year of the Queen ' s Jubilee he received brevet rank as a Past G . Deacon

of England , and was also an honorary member of the Grand Lodge of All Scottish Freemasonry in India . He was also a P . Z . in Keystone Chapter Royal Arch Masonry , a P . M . in the Mark , and Past M . W . S . of the Bombay Chapter of Rose Croix , so that his death will create a void which it will be difficult to fill .

Obituary .
