The District Of Queensland.
THE DISTRICT OF QUEENSLAND .
There is no District under the Grand Lodge of England in which Freemasonry has made more remarkable progress than in Queensland . We referred in our Notes of last week to the more recent evidences of this progress in the consecration of
sundry new lodges in or near Brisbane and elsewhere . But these alone enable us to form a very inadequate idea of what has been accomplished by the brethren in this remote Colony of the British Empire . Hence a hurried survey of the fortunes of the
Craft seems desirable , more especially as the credit of what has been done belongs in great measure to the District Grand Master , Bro . the Hon . AUGUSTUS C . GREGORY , C . M . G ., the only brother who has held the office , and whose patent bears date the 3 rd
September , 1862 . Under the auspices of this distinguished Mason—now in the 35 th year of his District Grand Mastership —almost the whole of the Masonic edifice has been raised , there having been only one lodge—the North Australian , No . 79 6 ,
Brisbane , which was warranted in 1859—in existence prior to 1862 , while two others were constituted early in that year , and a fourth within a few days of the grant of Bro . GREGORY'S patent , the lodges of 1862 creation being the Prince of Wales ,
No . 908 , Brisbane ; the Queensland , No . 921 , Ipswich ; and the Leichhardt , No . 932 , Rockhampton . There are now , as far as we are able to make out , 51 lodges in the District , including the Jubilee Lodge , No . 2633 , Brisbane—a report of the consecration of
which appeared in our columns of last week—and the Hopeful , No . 26 34 , Corinda , to which we referred in our Notes , though neither of them is entered on the roll in Grand Lodge Calendar . Thus of the total number now on the roll of Grand Lodge as
many as 50 have been ushered into existence during the last 35 years , and there are three others which enjoyed only a brief existence , namely , the Rockhampton , No . 1176 , warranted in 186 7 , -and removed from the list in 1871 ; the Darling Downs .
No . 1191 , Toowambe , warranted and erased in the same years respectivel y ; and the Star in the West , No . 1438 , Dalley , which was warranted in 1873 , and erased in 1891 . A closer examination of the roll of existing lodges shows how the District has been built up year by year .
We have mentioned the North Australian , No . 796 , and the Prince of Wales , No . 908 , both of Brisbane , with the Queensland , No . 921 , Ipswich as constituting the Dist . Grand Lodge ori ginall y as well as the Leichhardt , No . 932 , Rockhampton ,

which was warranted about the date of Bro . GREGORY'S appointment , and , indeed , may have been one ofthe original constituent members of tbe Dist . Grand Lodge . Five years , however , elapsed before any further additions were made to the roll , the Kennedy Lodge , No . 1175 , Bowen , and the Victoria , No . 1186 , Brisbane ,
dating from 186 7 , while two other lodges were warranted in the same year , but have since become extinct . Early in 1869 , the Pioneer Lodge , No . 1249 , Gympie , was warranted , and the following year the Southern Cross , No . 1315 , Toowoomba , while the St . George's , No . 1372 , was warranted in 1871 . In 18 72 and
18 73 , two lodges were constituted , which were respectively designated and numbered the Star of the East , No . 1407 , Maryborough , and the Star in the West , No . 1438 , Dalley , but of these two Stars , only the former survives till this day , the latter having been removed from the roll in 1891 . In April , 18 75 ,
H . R . H . the Prince of WALES , was installed in office as M . W . G . Master , and thenceforward the progress of Freemasonry in the Colony—as elsewhere—appears to have been marvellously rapid . Up till this date the number of lodges warranted in Queensland , inclusive of the three which survived
their birth for only a few years , was 13 , so that of the total number constituted since the Colony became a home of Masonry , as many as 41 have been warranted by his Royal Highness , the Charters Towers , No . 1546 , so named after the place in which it meets , being the first to have that honour
conferred upon it , and the Mackay , No . 1554 , Mackay , being not long after it . Three lodges were founded in 18 76 , namely , the Endeavour , No . 1595 , Cooktown ; the Townsville , No . 1596 , Townsville ; and the Tyrian , No . 1628 , Bundaberg ; while the Comet , No . 1680 , Barcaldine , belongs to the following year .
A short interval elapses and we have the Peak Downs , No . 1825 , Claremont , and the Raphael , No . 1850 , Roma , which were warranted in 1879 . In 1882 , the Lodge of St . George , No . 197 8 , Herberton , was established , and the following year new ground was broken by the founding of the Springsure , No .
20 5 , the Douglas , No . 2052 , and the Prince Leopold , No . 2067 , at Springsure , Port Douglas , and Gympie respectively . The General Gordon , No . 2119 , Brisbane , was placed on the roll in 1885 , and the Gregory , No . 2139 , Cairns , and the Star of the West , No . 216 7 , Hughenden , in 1886 . Three new
lodges were consecrated in 1887 , namely , the Blackall , No . 2207 , Blackall ; the Port Curtis , No . 2235 , Gladstone ; and the Norman , No . 2239 , Normanton ; while the Laidley , No . 226 7 , and the Albion , No . ' 2286 , Albion , were warranted in 1888 . In 1889 there were ushered into existence the Toowong ,
No . 2306 , Toowong , and the Aramac , No . 2338 , meeting in the town or settlement from which it is named , and in 18 90 , no less than five lodges , namely , the Albert , No . 2344 , Southport ; the Winton , No . 2365 , Winton ; the Etheridge , No . 2366 , George Town ; the Ravenswood , No . 2367 , Ravenswood ; and the
Fenwick , No . 2378 , Woolloongabba , near Brisbane , so named after our respected Bro . FENWICK , Dist . G . Secretary . In 18 91 three lodges saw the light , the Charleville , No . 2393 ; the Trinity , No . 2413 ; and the Lodge of Hope , No . 2419 , Allora ; and then in 18 94 we come to the Cleveland , No . 2503 , Townsville ; and the
Meteor , No . 2510 , Longreach ; in 18 95 , to the Galton , No . 2542 ; the Phcenix , No . 2564 , North Pine ; the Corinthian , No . 2573 , Childers ; and the Beauaraba , No . 2588 , Pittsworth ; while the five lodges constituted last year , and numbered 2613 , 2624 , 2629 , 26 33 , and 2634 respectively , have already been enumerated .
This , then , is the roll of lodges in this nourishing stronghold of Masonry , and from all we hear , there is at the present time a very earnest determination on the part of the lodges to
maintain their connection with the Grand Lodge from which they have received their warrants , even the mildest suggestion that a local Grand Lodge should be established having hitherto been received with the utmost disfavour .
