TRANSACTIONS OFTHE SOCIETY FOR BIBLICAL ARCH ? OLOGY .
The eighth volume of the Transactions of the Society for Biblical Arch .-eology , parts i . and ii ., is a most interesting one , and xve congratulate Bro . VV . H . Rylands , the active and learned Secretary , on its appearance , value , and editing . Among the many striking papers xve note one
especially full ' of interest for Masonic Students , namely , the paper by Dr . Birch on a tablet to txvo architects . It seems that these txvo xvere twin brothers , Suti and Har , and xvere " Mer kat" Architects , or Superintendents of the Works . They seem to have had charge of the Temple at Karnac and to have been living in the eighteenth dynasty . Thirty-four architects are named by Brugsch , Leiblein , and
Lepsius , and the subject deserves careful study . We think it right to observe , that though there is so far some evidence as to thc existence of priestly mysteries there is nothing so far to confirm Clavel ' s systematic account of thc organization of the Masons in grades , & c , Szc , as given in his " Picturesque History . " In some matters it is very " picturesque " indeed .

M . assumed the gavel to propose "The Health of the W . M . " He said no one xvho bad xvatched the career of Bro . Lexvis need be told that he xvould make a Master of xvhom the lodge might xvell be proud , and thc admirable , and , indeed , faultless manner in xvhich he had that day
initiated txvo candidates gave them a taste of his quality , and an idea of xvhat they had to expect of his future xvorking . He sincerely trusted Bro . Lexvis xvould have a happy and prosperous year of office , and asked them to drink the toast xvith all thc honour it deserved . 'The VVorshipful Master in response said that xvhen he xvas initiated in that lodge in 1 S 7 S , he told thc brethren in his maiden speech that if the G . A . O . T . U . gave him health
and strength , he should endeavour to reach the chair he noxv sat in . He had striven hard to attain that position , and in going up the rungs of the ladder , xvhich xvas like Jacob ' s ladder , he had alxvays clung to three of them , namely , those of hope , faith , and charity—hope that success xvould croxvn his efforts ; faith in the cause of Masonry and , the brethren of the lodge ; and charity xvith all men , especially xvith his brethren in Freemasonry . And
noxv that he had arrived at thc chair he trusted so to xvield thc gavel that not only might the lodge prosper , but that thc ( renial good feeling and perfect harmony that characterised its every feature xvould be maintained to the utmost , and xvhen he left thc chair to his successor , might they rexvard him by saying " Well done , Bro . Lexvis . " 'The next toast xvas that of" 'The Initiate , " and in giving it thc VV . M . dxvclt xvith commendable pride upon thc fact
that one of them xvas his oxvn brother , and thc other an old and esteemed friend of his brother's , and he felt sure they xvould never forget , but faithfully carry out thc solemn duties they had that night pledged themselves to perform . Bros . Lexvis and Johnson having responded , the toast of " The Past Masters" folloxved , coupled xvith the names of Bros . Holloxvay , Manning , Ives , and 'Turner , and these
brethren , xvith thc exception of thc latter , having responded , thc toast of " The Visitors " xvas given and most heartily received . Bro . Roberts in responding , said it astonished him to see thc VV . M . initiate the candidates in such an admirable manner on the very day of his installation . It must give thc brethren full and perfect confidence in the coming 13 months as to his ability to rule and govern thc lodirc xvith
honour and credit both to him and themselves . Bro . Penfold said that xvas thc first time lie had visited the Henley Lodge , and he cordially thanked Bro . West for his invitation . Thc brethren on the north and south sides of thc river xvcre only separated by , xvell , certainly not by a little " silver streak " noxv , xvhatever it might
havc been in times past , and he hoped to see an interchange of visits betxveen these brethren oftener than at present . He cordiall y thanked them for the toast . Bros . Gilbert and Keable also responded . " The Masonic Press , " "The Officers , " and thc Tyler ' s toast brought a pleasant evening to a close .

And
noxv that he had arrived at thc chair he trusted so to xvield thc gavel that not only might the lodge prosper , but that thc ( renial good feeling and perfect harmony that characterised its every feature xvould be maintained to the utmost , and xvhen he left thc chair to his successor , might they rexvard him by saying " Well done , Bro . that one of them xvas his oxvn brother , and thc other an old and esteemed friend of his brother's , and he felt sure they xvould never forget , but faithfully carry out thc solemn duties they had that night pledged themselves to perform . honour and credit both to him and themselves .
Bros .
