thc xvords , ' Bro . Edmund White . ' Thc portrait and list of names are to be kept in the lotlge , and the loving-cup in the possession of such one of the trustees as shall be selected for that purpose by his colleagues or a majority of them . 'The number of trustees shall be five , of xvhom 1 nominate txvo , namely , John Rubie and Thomas Payne Ashley ( xvho are also my executors ) , and I desire that the remaining three shall be elected as folloxvs : Alter due notice in the

summons sent to every brother , and in due order of business , and xvithout any previous canvassing or nomination , every member of the Royal Cumberland Lodge then present and xvil ' . ing to do so shall ivrite on a slip of paper the names , not exceeding three , of those members of the lodge xvhom he considers most eligible , and the three brethren having thc highest number of votes shall , in addition to those named by me , be the trustees , including the VV . M .

and Treasurer , xvho , xvhether elected or not , are during the tenure of their respective offices to be ex-officio members of the trustees ; the number of the trustees xvill thus at startingbe five , but may , by the vacation of their respective offices by either or both the present W . M . and Treasurer be increased to six or sex-cn . I xvish that , including the ex-officio trustees , their number may never be less than jive , of xvhom three shall be a quorum . In the event of any of the trustees

ceasing to be a member of the lodge , or to reside , permanently in Bath , or becoming bankrupt or insolvent , or compounding xvith his creditors , his office shall be deemed vacant , as in the event of death ; and I desire that before vacancies in the number of trustees , from xvhatever cause or causes resulting , shall never exceed txvo before successors are appointed , such successors to be elected in all cases in the manner prescribed for the first election , except

that the number of the names to be xvritten on the voting papers shall never exceed the number of trustees to be elected . In thc unforseen and I hope improbable event of the dissolution of the lodge , or the reduction of its members to less than seven , or failure in any of thc conditions of this grant , I xvish the principal sum of £ 200 to be gix-en to the Bath Royal United Hospital , and the loving cup , list of subscribers , and portrait to the senior trustee then living .

I am not so silly as to suppose that b y this or any other means I could purchase thc affection of my brethren ; nor , if 1 thought itpurchaseable , do I knoxv any coin sufficiently small by which I should estimate its value . I xvish not to create a nexv feeling , but to perpetuate an old one , that feeling of affectionate regard of xvhich my dear brethren have , during so many years , given me so many and such convincing proofs . The P . M . 's jexvel is to have engraven

thereon , besides the name of the recipient and date of presentation , thc xvords * Brother White s jexvel . ' This interesting and unique document xvas listened to xvith thc greatest attention , and on its conclusion Bro . T . Wilton ( Mayor ) rose and commented on the past Masonic zeal of liro . White , his kindliness of heart , his unabated love for thc Order , after having belonged so it for almost 50 years , ( only one being xvantingtocomplete that period ) , his desire

to hax * e his memory perpetuated in the lodge in so unique and generous a manner . Bro . Wilton concluded by expressing an opinion that the course pursed by Bro . White , xvhich xvould havc much inlluence on the future career of thc lodge , demanded much more than a hasty and bald vote of thanks to him . lie therefore proposed that the VV . M ., Wardens , Treasurer , ami Secretary form a committee to consider the best mode to be adopted by the lodge for thc reception and

acknowledgment of the considerate gifts . It was seconded by the W . M ., provided that thc Mayor xx-ould join the committee . With this addition thc resolution xvas carried . 'The business of the evening xvas brought to a close by a vote of thanks to thc VV . Ms . of Nos . 53 and 906 for their attendance , and to the mcmbcrsxvho had accompanied them .

In this xvas included the name of the brother visitor , xvho is a P . M . of No . 10 . Bro . Palmer acknoxvledged the compliment to himself , and Bro . VV . F . Collins on behalf of the Royal Sussex Lodge , both expressing their gratification at having heard the document received from Bro . White . The lodge xvas finally closed at half-past nine o ' clock .

CAMBRIDGE . —Scientific Lodge ( No . SS ) . — PRESENTATION TO THE DEPUTY PROV . GRAND MASTER . —At the meeting held on the 10 th inst ., at the Lion Hotel , thc folloxving ofiicers xverc present : Bros . A . 'Thompson , VV . M . ; G . McCallum , S . VV . ; W . I ' aohler , J . VV . ; Spalding , Chap . ; W . II . Jarrold , Treas . ; T . Nichols , Sec ; O . Papworth , S . D . ; \ V . Purchas , J . D . ; E . Hills , P . M ., D . C ; F . Piggott , I . G . ; VV . Davidson , P . M ., Stxvd . ; also six Past

Masters , and about 30 brethren and visiting brethren . After the VV . M . had raised and passed candidates in an excellent manner the lodge xvas resumed in the First Degree , xvhen thc VV . M . rose and said he had a very pleasant duty to perform in having to present on behalf of the brethren of thc Scientific Lodge a jewel to Bro . York , P . M ., on his having been appointed VVorshipful Deputy Prov . Grand Master of the Province of Cambridgeshire . 'They xvere all

xvell axvate uf the great interest he took in Fieemasonry . Nearly 20 years ago he xvas the W . M . of that lodge , and he again gave his valuable assistance by accepting thc office of VV . M . last year , and they all knexv how well and ably he filled that chair . He ( the VV . M . ) did not think that the Worshipful Prov . Grand Master , the Earl of Hardivicke , could have found a brother in that province xvho xvould have been able to fulfil thc duties of Deputy better than Bro . J .

Neal York , P . M . He xvas sure it xvas an appointment xvhich xvas received with satisfaction by the xvhole province . 'They had a proof of that in the great number of brethren xvho had attended at his induction at Wisbech , and the hearty reception lie received . The W . AI . then said : Bro . P . M . York , I noxv present to you a Deputy Provincial Grand Master's jexvel , in appreciation of your valuable and longcontinued services to thc Craft . May you long be spared

to xvear it and come amongst us . The Deputy Prov . Grand Master in responding thanked the brethren of the old Scientific for their handsome present . Honours had recently been heaped upon him , and this xvas an additional honour xvhich he felt most deeply . He xvas exceedingly pleased to find that his appointment had given satisfaction in the province , and it xvas most

gratifying to knoxv that his elevation had caused no jealousy . He could easily understand this , because the brethren ot the province xvere—in the xvords of the installation ceremony—of too generous a disposition to envy his preferment . Again he thanked them most sincerely for this token of their good feeling and esteem , xvhich he should treasure to the end of his days . At the banquet xvhich folloxved the VV . M , gave thc toast

of "The Prov . Grand Master and his Deputy , " and the D . P . G . M . said he had great pleasure in responding . If the Prov . Grand Master xvere present he xvould respond more fluently , but could not say more than he ( Bro . York ) felt , lie felt it to be a great kindness that they had received the toast so cordially , and on behalf of the P . G . M . and himself he thanked them . He likexvise thanked the

brethren of thc lodge for the high honour they had done him in presenting him xvith that very handsome jexvel . He xvas not axx-are xvhen he received it in lodge xvhat a handsome jexvel it was . He thanked them also for the manner in xvhich the presentation had been made . Since he had been in high position in the province he had attended the Sir Isaac Ncivton ( University ) Lodge , and had been received there xvith the same cordiality as he had met xvith in his

oxvn lodge , and he had felt very strongly throughout the xvhole of his preliminary introductions as D . P . G . M . the kindly feelings xvhich had been displayed toxvards him . It xvas much more than he expected . " He only hoped that his principal and himself might be able to maintain their good esteem . During the proceedings the W . M . xvas more than once complimented on the manner in xvhich he had gone through his xvork . ————
