P ., Treasurer of the Institution , responded to the toast , and said the figures which had just been announced so spoke for themselves that thc Treasurer required to say but very few words . The
gratitude of the Committee was overflowing , and the Treasurer was more comfortable than he was last year . Last year , of course , they did not expect much , and the Secretary did not expect so much as he receivad ; he feared the counter attractions to the Boys' Centenary , and that the Girls ' Institution would not be able to pay its way . But it was , and it also put by a little money without trenching on its reserves . This had been obtained by-the popularity of their Chairman and by the noble way in which all
connected with the Girls' School worked . That put them in the position of paying their way , and now adding a very handsome sum indeed to the rcierye . He , as the nominal recipient of the sum just announced , thanked the Chairman and the Slewards for their great exertions , and also the lady Stewatds . He also thanked the Chairman ' s gracious mother for attending at the School on Monday and distributing the piizes and for the very kindly
advice the gave to the girls and the encouragement she offered to all in charge of Ihe Institution . ( Cheers . ) The Earl of EI ' STON proposed " The Chairman , " one of his oldest friend" , whom he installed as Provincial Grand Master for Somersetshire . He was rcrnetted with him in many things in Freemasonry , in all of which he had done his best , and done it with mi ght and main .
Viscount DI ' NGARVAN , responding , said it had given him great pleasure to accept the position of Chairman of such a great meeting . He was extremely grateful to lis pi evince and other provinces for having done such great things . It was a great task , and he had not the eloquence to thank if em sufficiently . It was Different to make a speech in public and to rehearse it to the furniture in one ' s piivate room . ( Laughter . ) The brethren had done well in supporting that Institution , which educated , supported , and
clothed those who mi ght become the mothers of England ' s soldiers and sailors , who throughout ihe world would do their duty as England ' s soldiers and sailors always had done . He thanked his province very much . Bro Else , his Deputy Provircial Grand Master , was unable to be present , as he was ill in b d ; but la ^ t year , o'd man as he was . he took up 1000 guineas to the Boys' School . He greatly regretted Bro . Else ' s absence . The Earl of DARTRE * ' P . G . W ., proposed " Success to the other Masonic Charities . "
Bro . J . M . MCLEOD . Sec . R . M . I . B ., replied , and said the other Insli utions were deeply grateful for all the support the Craft had given them . The Benevolent Institution had reached the total sum that year of . ^ tOo ou , so that two of the Masonic Charities had up to that night exceeded £ 40 , 000 this year . For the Boys' School , he hoped they would get enough to carry on its work for the year . It had 283 boys , and Bro . C . E K » . \ ser , a most generous supporter of all the Institutions , wasg jing to preside oi June 28 h , and he hoped it would be his ( B o . . McLeod ' s ) hippy lot to thank the brethren for their very generous support on that occasion . ( Cheers . )
Bro . JAMES TERRY ( S c . Benevolent Institution ) , who was loudly called for , said that that day the Commi'tee of the Institution had decided to take on five additional males and three add tional widows at the election next Friday . ( Cheers . ) This would entail an extra expense of nearl y £ , OO a year for all time to come , or , £ 16 , 680 a year in annuities , and this was exclusive of working expenses .
The company then joined the ladies in the Temple , where a grand concert was given , the artistes being , under the direction of the Westminster Singer ? , Aliss Khie Macktnz ' e , Miss Annie B . ir . le , Miss Ethel Bsvans , the Westminster Singers—Hros . Geo . May , C . Ackerman , Harper Kearton , and VV . 11 . Brereton ; Miss Gertrude Collins ( solo violin ); Bro . Mel . B . Spurr ( musical sketch ); and Bro . F . R . Kinkee ( Organist and Accompanist ) .
Analysis Of The Returns.
ANALYSIS OF THE RETURNS .
There is no need to devote any portion of our space to a laudation of the Returns at Wednesday ' s Festival . We , therefore , enter upon our task of analysis without preface , but not without the pleasure of knowing that the figures we are examining together constitute the highest total ever realised at an ordinary Festival on behalf of our senior Institution . The total , as stated elsewhere , is . £ 21 , 045 3 s - 3 d . i the number of ladies and brethren who gave their services in raising the amount being 547 , of whom London , which returned £ 10 , 990 9 s . 6 d ., was represented by 265 , and the Provinces , which gave £ 10 , 054135 . gd ., by 282 .
Directing our attention , m the first place , to LONDON , we remark that of its contingent of Stewards seven were ladies , one a Lewis , and 72 brethren were Unattached , so that the number that represented lodges , chapters , or other Masonic bodies , or figured under the head of the House Committee , was 185 : andas may have been expected , among the lists compiled is a larger
, number than usual of those which exceed £ 100 . The highest of these is to the credit of the Fellowship Lodge , No . 2535 , which was represented by Bros . Eliab Rogers , VV . M ., and Sir John Monckton , andamouted to £ 647 , towards which Bro . W . H . Bailey . P . G . T ., and the first VV . M . ofthe lodge contributed £ 105 . Next after this wehavethe £ 420 raised by Bro . W . H . G . Rudderforth , of the Eyre Lodge , No . 2742 , which was only consecrated on the 17 th of last month , and next Bro . Sir
John B . Monckton again , but as Steward for the Buckingham and Chandos Lodge , No . 1150 , with £ 304 ios . Fourth and fifth in order are Bros . Daniel Mayer and Imre Kiralfy with a difference of only 20 guineas between their respective lists , that of Bro . Mayer—who took up £ 1260 at the Beys' Centenary Festival—of the Royal Naval Lodge , No . 59 , being for £ 283 ios ., and that of Bro . Kiralfy , Empress Lodge , No . 25 S 1 , for £ 262 ios . Bro . Frank Richardson ,
P . G . D ., of the House Committee , has £ 236 5 s . to his credit , and Bro . E . A Smith , United Lodge of Prudence , No . 83 , £ 210 to his , while Bro . A . Cunning , ton , St . Leonard Lodge , No . 1766 , was well up with £ 200 . The following make a convenient group of four , there being no marked difference in the returns they severally made , namely , Bro , Horatio Saqui , Chough Lodge , 2264 , £ 174 6 s . ; Bro . T . W . Thorpe , Anchor Lodge , No , 1704 , £ 170 13 s . ; Bro . W . Wilkinson
Woodgrange Lodge , "No . 2409 , £ 168 ios . 6 d . ; and Bro . H . A . Sheppard , Crusaders Lodge , No . 1677 , £ 164 16 s . The four following are also in a group to themselves , namely , Bro . J . Hope Guyton , of the Great City Lodge , No . 1426 , with a list of £ 157 ios . ; Bro . John G , Robeson , Lion and Lamb Lodge , No . 192 , with £ 157 is . ; Bro . E . Roehrich , of the Lodge of Verity , No . 2739—which was not long since consecrated—with
£ 155 ; and Bro . Sir James R . Clark , Bart ., R . A ., of the London Irish Rifles Lodge , No . 2312 , with £ 150 . Next come Bro . Moll , of the Telegraph Cable Lodge , No . 2470 , with £ 135 17 s . 6 d . ; Bro . Rear-Admiral W . H . C . St . Clair , Navy Lodge , No . 2612 , with £ 135—of which £ 105 was given by Bro . Major Woodall—and Bro . J . M . Klempner , Lodge of Light , No . 2721 , with £ 131 5 s ., of which £ 105 was given by the bdge itself ; and Bro . Jesse Masters , Mount
Edgcumbe Lodge , No . 1446 , with a round £ 120 . Bro . Cornelius Mansfield , West Ham Abbey Lodge , No . 2291 , is entered for £ 117 ; and then follow Bros . F . P . Telfer , Fortitude and Old Cumberland Lodge , No . 12 , and A . F . Hardyment , Brondesbury Lodge , No . 269 S , each handing in a total of £ 115 103 . ; which in the case of Bro . Tel'er includes his peisonal donation of £ 105 . Bro . A . C . Spaull , of the House Committee , and Bro . VV . Hillier , of the General Committee Dinner Club ,
return each of them £ 110 5 s . ; and Bro . A . J . Naughton , the newly-installed W . M . of the Alfred Newton Lodge , No . 2686 , £ 110 . Bros . F . Jackson , St . Mark's Lodge , No . S 57 ; W . E . Jeffery , Rose Lodge , No . 1622 ; and Henry Cornford , Earl of Lathom Lodge , No . 1922 , return 100 guineas ( £ 105 ) each : and Bro . J . W . Hunt , of the Hugh Owen Lodge , No . 2593 , closes up the rear with a plain , unsophisticated , but useful , £ 100 .
Among other items that may be mentioned are the lists of Bros . Robert Grey and Chas . Hammerton , oi the House Committee , for £ Ht and JCgo respectively ; of Bro . R . A . Kearsey , Kent Lodge , No . 15 , for . C 70 17 s . 6 d . ; of Bro . Tom S . Cookes , Globe Lodge , No . 23 , for CSi 1 S 5 . ; of Bro . VV . P . Wilton , Gihon Lodge , No . 49 , for C 91 7 s . ; and of Bros . A . H . Debenham and Chas . Robinson , jointly representing Peace and Harmony Lodge , No . Co , for . CH 4 . Bro . Alfred
Page , Pythagorean Lodge , No . 79 , has C 89 5 s . to his credit , and Bro . B . Greive , Cavea c Ledge , Xo . 179 , . ( . ' 90 6 s . Bro . W . Curry , of the Salisbury Lodge , No . 435 , returns . tya 8 s ., exclusive of what is entered to his credit in Hertfordshire . Bro . T . Sydney Smith , Nelson Lodge , Xo . 700 , raised L ' 74 us ., and Bro . B . H . P . Kingdon , of the Victoria Rifles Lodge , N 0 . S 22 , . C 75 12 s . Bro . W . Barry , Steward for the Metropolitan Lodge , Xo . 1507 , is entered for CS 7 195 . ; Bro . B .
Groner , Cripplegate Lodge , Xo . 1615 . for , 1 * 78 15 s . ; and Bro . W . M . Rhodes , Bayard Lodge , Xo . 1615 , lor £ 73 ios . Bro . Geo . Herbert-Burns ^ Rothesay Lodge , Xo . 16 S 7 , compiled ( . ' 93 93 . ; Bro . R . W . James , Wickham Lodge , No . 1924 , . CS 4 ios . ; Bro . L . Gunzel , Queen ' s Westminster Lodge , No , 2021 , £ 70 7 s . ; Bro . T . G . A . Burns , of the Rahere Lodge , Xo . 2546 , C 78 15 s . ; and Bro . W . J . Mason , Unattached , t ' 73 ios . All these are good lists , and helped materially to swell the London total to the sum that it reached .
We must now give our attention to TIIE PROVINCES , of which 33 , out of a roll of 46 , were represented by 282 Stewards , by whose combined efforts a total of Derations and Subscriptions amounting to £ 10 , 054 ' 3 - 9 & - was raised . Having regard to the enormous sum obtained from this section of the Craft for the Boys' Centenary , and the satisfactory work done for the
Benevolent Institution in February , we cannot look upon the result on Wednesday as being otherwise than most creditable to all who took part in the celebration . The absentees were 13 in number , and included BRISTOL ( nine lodges ) , which was not represented at the Benevolent gathering , but figured at the memorable Boys ' Festival of last year for £ 354 7 s . 6 d . CUMBERLAND AND WESTMORLAND ( 21 lodges ) raised £ 222 is . for the Boys' School last year , and would , no doubt , have
shown to greater advantage had it not been that its Prov . G . Master , Lord Henry Cavendish-Bentinck , M . P ., took the chair at the Festival of the same Institution in 18 97 , and it loyally supported his lordship by subscribing £ l 26 j . HEREFORDSIIIKK ( five lodges ) did so well at the Boys' Centenary , when it raised £ 330 15 s ., that we are not surprised at its absence from the present year ' s Festivals . LINCOLNSHIRE ( 24 lodges ) , notwithstanding its contribution of nearly £ 1384 to " Our
Boys " in June , 18 9 8 , took part in the Benevolent meeting last February , and raised by its representative , Bro . Major Moresby White , £ 166 as , and may , therefore , justly claim to be excused from contributing on this occasion . The same remark applies with equal force to the Provinces of MONMOUTHSHIRE ( 11 lodges ) and NORFOLK ( 18 lodges ) , the former of which raised £ 1088 for the Boys ' Centenary and £ 480 for the Benevolent Festival in February , while the latter
gave £ 818 to the Boys' School and £ 105 to the Old Peop le on the same two occasions . It is a long time since it devolved upon us to include SHROPSHIRE ( 12 lodges ) among the unrepresented Provinces , but the absence is to be accounted for chiefly by the heavy contribution of nearl y £ 1200 to last year's Centenary . It has not , however , wholly overlooked the current year ' s requirements , and in February its Pror , G . M . and another prominent supporter of our Charities subscribed
