ROYAL MASONIC INSTITUTION FOR GIRLS .

The Quarterly Court of Subscribers to the Royal Masonic Institution for Girls was held on the nth instant at Freemasons' Tavern , Bro . Henry Smith , P . G . D ., Past Deputy Provincial Grand Master for West Yorkshire , in the chair . Among other brethren present were : Bros . George Everett , S . G . D . ; Frank Richardson , P . G . D . ; A . C . Spaull , J . C . Fitzgerald , J . W .

Burgess , C . E . Keyser , E . M . Monev , S . J . Attenborough , J . M . McLeod , Sec . R . M . I . B . ; H . Nuding , W . G . Kentish , and W . Russell . A letter from the daughter of the late Bro . Rev . C . J . Martyn , P . G . C , acknowledg ing the vote of condolence passed by the Committee on the death of her father was ordered to be entered on the minutes .

The C HAIRMAN said he held in his hand a motion which he knew would meet with the approval of all brethren present . The tenor of the motion , he would explain , was a vote of sympathy with the King on the death of her late Majesty Cjueen Victoria , and a vote of congratulation to his Majesty on his accession to the Throne . Bro . F . R . W . HEDGES , Sec , then read the address :

That this Court of the Governors and Subscribers of the Royal Masonic Institution for Girls embrace the earliest opportunity of loyally and dutifully giving expression to their feelings of deep sadness at the ever-to-be-lamented demise of her Majesty Queen Victoria , Empress of India , for so many years the gracious Chief Patroness of the Institution . At the same time , with loyalty and deep

devotion , they venture humbly to offer their sincere congratulations to his Majesty King Edward VII ., so long their Patron and President , and to her Majesty Queen Alexandra , who , when Princess of Wales , honoured the Institution as its Grand Patroness , and pray that for many years both their Majesties may be spared to the British Empire .

Bro . FRANK RICHARDSON seconded the motion , and said he was sure it would meet with general acceptance . The motion was then put and carried unanimously , all the brethren standing . Bro . ALFRED C . SPAULL proposed the re-election of R . W . Bro . Sir Reginald Hanson , Bart ., P . G . W ., as Treasurer of the Institution . Sir Reginald Hanson bad always shown the greatest interest in the welfare of the Institution and he had been many years its Treasurer .

Bro . FRANK RICHARDSON , P . G . D ., seconded the motion , and stated that if all the Governors of the Institution were present the motion would be as unanimously carried as he was sure it would be by the Subscribers to the Institution , because he was a constant visitor to the Institution , was acquainted with all the scholars , and was a most generous donor to its funds . The election was unanimously carried .

Bro . STANLEY J . ATTENBOROUGH , P . A . G . D . C , then moved " That this Court accept the sum of 1550 guineas from the Province ot Kent in commemoration of the rrsth Anniversary Festival of the Institution , to be held under the presidency of the M . W . the Pro Grand Master , the Earl Amherst , R . W . Prov . G . M . Kent , for the purchase of a perpetual presentation of one girl to the School , to be called the ' Earl Amherst

Presentation , ' the right of such presentation to be vested in the Charity Committee of the Provincial Grand Lodge of Kent for the time being . " The brethren of Kent had subscribed this money in honour of the Pro Grand Master taking the chair at the forthcoming Festival of the Institution , and he did not know it was necessary to make any remarks on the motion . Bro . Major HERBERT G . E . GREEN , Prov . G . Secretary W . Yorkshire , seconded the motion .

Bro . W . RUSSELL , P . A . G . D . C , Prov . G . Treas . Kent , supported the motion .

Bro . FRANK RICHARDSON suggested the addition of the words " subject to an agreement to be entered into with the province and the Institution , to be approved by Bro . Russell and himself . " Bro . RUSSELL did not think that any agreement of the kind was

necessary . He wanted it to be clearly understood that the province made the gift in honour of the Pro Grand Master and its Provincial Grand Master . The CHAIRMAN stated that he had had to do with several Perpetual Presentations of the same kind , and it was usual to have an agreement such as had been described by Bro . Richardson .

After consultation between Bro . Russell and Bro . Attenborough the suggestion of Bro . Richardson was agreed to , and the motion of Bro . Attenborough , with the addendum of Bro . Richardson , was agreed to unanimousl y . The Court then proceeded to elect 15 girls into the School from a list of 22 approved candidates . The following are the unsuccessful candidates :

LADIES NIGHT OF THE VICTORIA PARK LODGE , No . 1816 .

This popular lodge had a special gathering on the 29 th ult . at the London Tavern , Fenchurch-street , when the W . M ., Bro . Geo . Haysom , had the gratification of counting a gathering of well-known East London members of the Craft , the total number present , including ladies , being about 150 . Reception was at nve o ' clock , when tea and coffee were served , and all were made " at home . " The dinner was the first exercise , and at this there were oresent . amongst

one , so that Masonic talk was carefully touched , but the W . M . signalised the occasion by presenting to them some fine silver brooches , bearing the monogram of the lodge . Of course , there was refreshment , and after this , " The Worshipful Master ' s Health " was given by Bro . F . H . HARRIS , I . P . M ., who took the opportunity of presenting to the wife of the Worshipful Master a diamond brooch on behalf of the lodge .

The WORSHIPFUL MASTER , in happy terms , acknowledged the gift , and , as a fitting response , gave " The Health of the Ladies , " remarking that the ladies ' night was a grand institution . Bro . A . GOVIEB , P . M ., had the privilege of responding . The usual proceedings followed , and a capital programme of music and song followed . Bro . G . P . Hans was the director and governor in this direction , and may be congratulated on its completeness and complete success .

MASONRY IN PALESTINE .

THE CANADIAN LODGE IN JERUSALEM—VISIT OF M . W BRO . J . ROSS ROBERTSON , OF CANADA .

J ERUSALEM , 18 th March . —On the evening of the 16 th the Canadian Masonic Lodge , warranted here in 1 S 73 , was visited by one of the Past G . Masters of Canada , Bro . J . Ross Robertson . He was accompanied by his eldest son , Bro . J . Sinclair Robertson , and Bro . Stewart E . Malloch , of Hamilton ( Temple Lodge ) , and a number of British and American brethren , who are now visiting the Holv Land .

There was a large attendance of the brethren of the lodge . Bro . Kayat , the W . M ., presided at the opening , and after Bro . Robertson took the chair , he delivered an interesting lecture on the history of Masonry , and in the course of his address pointed out that the traditions which had been missed for many years to the effect that Palestine was the cradle of the Craft , and that Egypt as well laid claim to the founding of Masonry were all myths

made out of the imagination of men , who years ago worked overtime in the manufacturing of traditions . Bro . Robertson quoted from the works of Gould and Hughan , two of the greatest living authorities on Craft history . He also referred to the work of the Lodge of the Quatuor Coronati , in London and to the good work done by Bro . Speth , its Secretary . The address concluded with a brief account of the Craft in Canada .

Gundulph Lodge , No . 1050 . INSTALLATION OF BRO . E . J . MANTELL . The annual selection and installation of W . M . and ollicers of the above lodge took place on the 3 rd instant . _ By the kindness of the Mayor and Corporation , the installation ceremony took place in the Guildhall , Rochester , when there was a large attendance of members of the lodge and brethren representing lodges 1424 , 2046 , 1174 , 20 , 158 , 184 , 2404 , 299 , and 503 .

The selection of W . M . for the year had fallen upon Bro . E . J . Mantel ) , and he was duly installed by the I . P . M ., Bro . R . Ternouth . The new W . M . selected the following as his officers for the ensuing year : Bros . A . L . Brown , S . W . ; H . Amon , J . W . ; J . W . Nash , P . M ., Treas . ; E . Barrell , P . M ., P . P . G . Std . Br ., Sec . ; H . S . Bagshaw , P . M ., Asst . Sec . ; J . T . Snell , S . D . ; W . T . Boucher , J . D . ; W . A . Peach , D . C . ; D . E . Bonvonni , Org . ; W . St . J . Brice , I . G . ; W . Broadbridge , Almoner ; W . Browning and C . H . Dibley , Stwds . ; and F . Oman , Tyler . At the close of the installation , the W . M . having received the congratulations of the brethren , presented

to the I . P . M ., Bro . R . Ternouth , a handsome jewel which had been voted by the lodge for the able manner in which he had discharged his duties during the past year . Bro . Ternouth thanked the brethren for their kindness . The W . M . proposed , and Bro . A . L . Brown , S . W ., seconded , a vote of thanks to the Mayor and Corporation for the use of the Guildhall , and for allowing the lodge Mag to Hy from the Castle keep . The proposal was unanimously carried . Bro . Bagshaw proposed , and Bro . Bonvonni seconded— "That Bro . St . J . Brice , jun ., be re-elected Charity representative . " This

was agreed to . Bro . Brice thanked the brethren for their renewed confidence . The W . M . proposed , and Bro . A . W . Hodge , I . P . M ., seconded— " Thata vote of thanks be passed to the Installing Master for the able manner in which he had performed the ceremony of installation . " It v / as carried , and Bro . Ternouth responded . The customary banquet afterwards took place at the lodge house , the King ' s Head Hotel , Rochester , the W . M . presiding . During the evening the usual loyal and Masonic toasts were honoured .

Wllberforce Lodge , No . 2134 . INSTALLATION OF BRO . HENRY HARKER . The installation meeting of the above lodge took place in the Masonic Hall , St . Luke-street , Hull , on the gth instant , in the presence of a large number of brethren of the city and district . On the lodge assembling there were present Bros . George H . Strong , W . W . of the lodge during the past year , presented a very beautiful Past Master ' s jewel to Bro . George II . Strong , l . P . M . He said that during the past year the lodge had been very successful under Bro . Strong , P . M . ' s reign . He had also given them the benefito t his

professional experience , and the lodge had been remodelled and beautified at a cost of nearly £ 200 . So great was the _ esteem he was held in that the members of thc lodge had been unanimous in contributing to the jewel . The jewel bore the following inscription : " Presented to W . Bro . George H . Strong by the members of the Wilberforce Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons ( 2134 ) , for valuable services rendered as W . M . during the year 1900-1 . " The l . P . M . expressed his most sincere thanks for the high compliment paid him , and concluded by presenting the lodge with photographic portraits of himself and his officers .

The installation banquet was provided by Bro . Henry Feller , cf the Imperial Hotel , and its quality spoke for itself . The usual loyal and Masonic toasts were given from the chair , and were heartily esponded to .

one , so that Masonic talk was carefully touched , but the W . M . signalised the occasion by presenting to them some fine silver brooches , bearing the monogram of the lodge . Of course , there was refreshment , and after this , " The Worshipful Master ' s Health " was given by Bro . F . H . HARRIS , I . P . M ., who took the opportunity of presenting to the wife of the Worshipful Master a diamond brooch on behalf of the lodge .

The WORSHIPFUL MASTER , in happy terms , acknowledged the gift , and , as a fitting response , gave " The Health of the Ladies , " remarking that the ladies ' night was a grand institution . Bro . A . GOVIEB , P . M ., had the privilege of responding . The usual proceedings followed , and a capital programme of music and song followed . Bro . G . P . Hans was the director and governor in this direction , and may be congratulated on its completeness and complete success .

THE CANADIAN LODGE IN JERUSALEM—VISIT OF M . W BRO . J . ROSS ROBERTSON , OF CANADA .

J ERUSALEM , 18 th March . —On the evening of the 16 th the Canadian Masonic Lodge , warranted here in 1 S 73 , was visited by one of the Past G . Masters of Canada , Bro . J . Ross Robertson . He was accompanied by his eldest son , Bro . J . Sinclair Robertson , and Bro . Stewart E . Malloch , of Hamilton ( Temple Lodge ) , and a number of British and American brethren , who are now visiting the Holv Land .

There was a large attendance of the brethren of the lodge . Bro . Kayat , the W . M ., presided at the opening , and after Bro . Robertson took the chair , he delivered an interesting lecture on the history of Masonry , and in the course of his address pointed out that the traditions which had been missed for many years to the effect that Palestine was the cradle of the Craft , and that Egypt as well laid claim to the founding of Masonry were all myths

made out of the imagination of men , who years ago worked overtime in the manufacturing of traditions . Bro . Robertson quoted from the works of Gould and Hughan , two of the greatest living authorities on Craft history . He also referred to the work of the Lodge of the Quatuor Coronati , in London and to the good work done by Bro . Speth , its Secretary . The address concluded with a brief account of the Craft in Canada .

Gundulph Lodge , No . 1050 . INSTALLATION OF BRO . E . J . MANTELL . The annual selection and installation of W . M . and ollicers of the above lodge took place on the 3 rd instant . _ By the kindness of the Mayor and Corporation , the installation ceremony took place in the Guildhall , Rochester , when there was a large attendance of members of the lodge and brethren representing lodges 1424 , 2046 , 1174 , 20 , 158 , 184 , 2404 , 299 , and 503 .

The selection of W . M . for the year had fallen upon Bro . E . J . Mantel ) , and he was duly installed by the I . P . M ., Bro . R . Ternouth . The new W . M . selected the following as his officers for the ensuing year : Bros . A . L . Brown , S . W . ; H . Amon , J . W . ; J . W . Nash , P . M ., Treas . ; E . Barrell , P . M ., P . P . G . Std . M . having received the congratulations of the brethren , presented

to the I . P . M ., Bro . R . Ternouth , a handsome jewel which had been voted by the lodge for the able manner in which he had discharged his duties during the past year . Bro . Ternouth thanked the brethren for their kindness . The W . M . proposed , and Bro . A . L . Brown , S . W ., seconded , a vote of thanks to the Mayor and Corporation for the use of the Guildhall , and for allowing the lodge Mag to Hy from the Castle keep . The proposal was unanimously carried . Bro . Bagshaw proposed , and Bro . Bonvonni seconded— "That Bro . St . J . Brice , jun ., be re-elected Charity representative . " This

was agreed to . Bro . Brice thanked the brethren for their renewed confidence . The W . M . proposed , and Bro . A . W . Hodge , I . P . M ., seconded— " Thata vote of thanks be passed to the Installing Master for the able manner in which he had performed the ceremony of installation . " It v / as carried , and Bro . Ternouth responded . The customary banquet afterwards took place at the lodge house , the King ' s Head Hotel , Rochester , the W . M . presiding . During the evening the usual loyal and Masonic toasts were honoured .

Wllberforce Lodge , No . 2134 . INSTALLATION OF BRO . HENRY HARKER . The installation meeting of the above lodge took place in the Masonic Hall , St . W . of the lodge during the past year , presented a very beautiful Past Master ' s jewel to Bro . George II . Strong , l . P . M . He said that during the past year the lodge had been very successful under Bro . Strong , P . M . ' s reign . He had also given them the benefito t his

professional experience , and the lodge had been remodelled and beautified at a cost of nearly £ 200 . So great was the _ esteem he was held in that the members of thc lodge had been unanimous in contributing to the jewel . The jewel bore the following inscription : " Presented to W . Bro . George H . Strong by the members of the Wilberforce Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons ( 2134 ) , for valuable services rendered as W . M . during the year 1900-1 . " The l . P . M . expressed his most sincere thanks for the high compliment paid him , and concluded by presenting the lodge with photographic portraits of himself and his officers .

The installation banquet was provided by Bro . Henry Feller , cf the Imperial Hotel , and its quality spoke for itself . The usual loyal and Masonic toasts were given from the chair , and were heartily esponded to .
