New Masonic Hall At Calstock.
NEW MASONIC HALL AT CALSTOCK .
DEDICATION CEREMONY . In the regrettable absence of the Earl of Mount Edgcumbe , Prov . Grand Master of Cornwall , a new Masonic Hall , which has been erected at Calstock at a cost , including the purchase of the site , of about £ 800 , was dedicated on the 1 st instant in the presence of a large number of brethren , by Bro , P . Colville Smith P . G . D . Eng ., and D . P . G . M . of Cornwall . The foundation stone of the new hall , ' a very handsome and commodious building , was kid by Bro . Colville Smith on
the 21 st of August last , and the whole style and structure of the building does credit to the designers , Bros . H . Down and N . R . Rosekilly , the latter of whom has not only built the hall , but is , very appropriately , the first W . M . to preside in the new lodge , a position to which he was installed at the close of the ceremony . The lodge room itself , apart from the other portions of the building , is an attractive lofty , and convenient one . It measures 23 feet by 32 , has an open hammer beam
roof , is well lighted , and handsomely furnished , the furniture including two imposing Corinthian columns , with Doric capitals , placed one on each side of the W . M . ' s chair , which were made in 1797 , and were originally the property of Sir William Trelawny , of Harewood House , Calstock . These columns are the gift of Bro . H . Down . The hall also includes a porch , a lobby , and two ante rooms , and is altogether admirably suited to the purposes of Freemasons .
In the performance of the dedication ceremony the D . P . G . M . was assisted by Bro . Bernard F . Edyvean , Prov . G . Sec , and P . A . G . D . C . of England , who acted as Chaplain in the unavoidable absence of Bro . W . J . Hughan , of Torquay , and there were also presentt Bros . G . Edyvean , P . S . G . W . Devon ; R . A Courtney , P . P . S . G . W . ; W . Symons , P . P . G . D . C ; G . Rowe , P . P . J . G . D .
W . R . Bawling , P . P . A . G . S . ; C . Mutten , Prov . G . Treas . Devon ; H . Skinner Prov . G . S . Devon ; W . Coulter , P . P . G . P .: A . Bowhay , P . G . Stwd . ; W Sowden , P . P . A . G . S . ; H . Down , P . P . G . S . Wks . ; N . Bray , P . P . G . Stwd . ; J . Brooking , P . G . Stwd . ; Dymond , P . P . G . O . ; and a large number of other brethren from Callington , Tavistock , Saltash , Gunnislake , and other places .
The lodge was first opened in the First Degree by the W . M ., Bro . Northam , who afterwards gave place to the D . P . G . M ., Bro . Colville Smith , who appointed Bro . R . A . Courtney as his Senior Warden , and Bro . G . Edyvean as his Junior Warden .
The DEP . PROV . G . MASTER , addressing the brethren , remarked that while he regretted , as he was sure they all did , the absence of their popular Prov . G . Master , the Earl of Mount Edgcumbo , he was glad to be present that day because it gave him the opportunity of completing the work commenced in August last by dedicating the super-structure raised on that foundation-stone , a super-structure which appeared to be perfect in all its parts and most honourable to the builder . He took the chair that day with feelings of great regret , because
he was sure it was the wish of everyone present that it should have been filled by one who was the first Mason in the Province of Cornwall—their respected and esteemed Prov . G . Master . They all knew how many were his private and public avocations , and latterly he had been called to very important duties , which showed how much his services were appreciated in the highest quarters , and he was sure that no duty ever thrust upon the noble earl during his public career
had been more honourable to himself or more gratifying to the Masonic brethren in Cornwall than that he should have been selected to represent his Majesty the King , their late Grand Master , in the principal Courts of Europe . ( Applause . ) In his unavoidable absence the Prov . G . Master had commanded him to take his place that day , and he had very great pleasure in undertaking the duty , and thus completing the work that was commenced in August last .
1 he usual ceremonial of dedicating the lodge was then observed by the use oi corn , wine , and oil , the whole ceremony being performed with great impressiveness and solemnity , and at its conclusion the D . P . G . M . said he was glad to again receive the plans , which were handed to him seven months ago , and to know that the work had been so well and worthily carried out . He heartily congratulated all the brethren on the success that had attended their efforts .
The newly-elected W . M ., Bro . Roskell , was then installed in office by the D . P . G . M ., assisted by Bros . Bernard , Edyvean , and A . Bowhay , and the ceremony was most impressively and eloquently performed . At its conclusion the W . M . appointed his officers as follows : Bros . J . Northam , l . P . M . ; A . Andrew , S . W . ; T . T . Bowhay , J . W . ; H . Down , Treas . ; R . R . Alford , Sec . ; W . Coulter , Chap . ; C . W . Webber , S . D . ; S . H . Stanbury , J . D . ; J . Rickard , I . G . ; S . J . Hooper , D . C . ; J . Herring and J . Dawe , Stwds . ; VV . F . Pearce , Org . ; and J . Eade , Tyler .
IJcfore the proceedings terminated , Bro . A . BOWHAY proposed a vote of thanks to the D . P . G . M . and the P . G . S . for the excellent and impressive manner in which they had performed the ceremony , not only of dedicating the new lodge , but of installing the W . M . and his officers . They all deeply regretted the absence of the Prov . Grand Master , whom they would have been delighted to welcome on so interesting and important an occasion , but they felt amply compensated for his lordship ' s absence by the splendid manner in which the work had been performed
by Bros . Colville Smith and Edyvean . The ceremony , performed in such an able manner , could not fail to leave a deep impression on their hearts , and from it they could learn a lesson which he hoped they never would forget . ( App lause . ) Bro . H . Dowx seconded the motion , which was carried with acclamation , and The D . P . G . M ., in acknowledging the vote , again complimented the Calstock brethren on the splendid building they had raised for the purposes of Freemasonry . Such an excellent lodge room as that in which they were assembled
required excellent work , and he felt confident that the brethren would in future , as in the past , do their best to carry on the good work with vigour and success . On a recent occasion , on the presentation of a Masonic address to the King at St . James ' s Palace , their Prov . Grand Master , the Earl of Mount Edgcumbe , spoke to him in most cordial terms of the Masonic brethren at Calstock , and expressed his great regret that it would be impossible for him to be with them that day .
Bro . EDYVEAN , who also returned thanks , said it was a great pleasure to him to have taken part in the ceremony of that day . The Calstock brethren had done nobly in erecting such a beautiful ouilding , and had set a worthy example to other plates that were even in better circumstances than themselves . In Bro . R . R . Alford they had an ideal Secretary , and with such an excellent body of officers they deserved to succeed .
The brethren afterwards dined at the Tamar Hotel , where an excellent dinner was provided by Bro . Herring , and several complimentary toasts were proposed .
