THE THAMES STEAMBOAT COMPANY are renovating their 35 boats in view of the fact that they will recommence their service on the ist prox . An innovation which will be appreciated is an awning to protect the passengers from the sun .

BRO . LORD MARCH has been appointed Provincial Grand Master of Sussex in the room of the Duke of Connaught . Bro . Lord March will be installed upon his return from South Africa , where he is in command of the Sussex Militia . POLICE CAUTION . —In consequence of the large increase in the sale of bananas , the Chief Commissioner of Police has issued a notice cautioning the public against throwing banana skins on the footpaths , as a large member of serious accidents have been reported to him through that cause .

GREENWICH BOROUGH AND THE KING . —The Greenwich Borough Council has decided to petition the King praying that the title Royal may be prefixedto the borouph in the place of Metropolitan . One ground upon which the application is to be made is that Greenwich gives the time to the whole country .

THE MERCHANT TAYLORS' COMPANY have granted the use of their hall to the City Lands Committee for a dinner on Friday , the 10 th prox . The chairman , Bro . T . Hastings Miller , will entertain Bros , the Lord Mayor , Aldernun and Sheriff Vaughin Morgan , and Sheriff Joseph Lawrence on the occasion . BETHNAL GREEN FREE LIBRARY . —Through the kindness of Bro . the Lord Mayor the Mansion House has been placed at the disposal of the authorities of this library for the purposes of the annual meeting , which will be held on Wednesday , the 24 th instant . His Majesty King Edward VII . has signified his intention of continuing his patronage of the Institution .

SEVEN POUNDS A MINUTE . —The result is announced of the sale just held by the Irish Industries Association at Grosvenor House . £ 3339 was taken , which is at the rate of £ j per minute for every minute the doors were open . This is the largest sum secured at a St . Patrick ' s Day sale by Lady Londonderry ' s committee , and brings the total sent into Ireland , chiefly to the cottage workers , to £ 61 , 292 .

THE ST . BRIDE ' S LODGE , NO . 2 S 17 . —At the regular meeting of this lodge , at the Hotel Cecil , on the tst inst ., Bro . the Lord Mayor , P . G . D ., was unanimously elected the Master , in succession to Bro . C . J . Drummond , P . M ., M . E . Z ., the first Master . The installation will take place on Monday , October 7 th . Bros . Alderman and Sheriff Vaughan Morgan , P . G . Treas . ; Sheriff Lawrence , Alderman Sir William Treloar , Alderman Strong , and H . B . Marshall , CC , J . P ., G . Treas ., are among the members of the lodge .

THE PROVINCIAL GRAND CHAPTER OF L ANCASHIRE ( W . D . ) will be held at the Co-Operative Hall , St . Mary's-road , Garston , on Monday , _ the 22 nd instant , at halfpast one o ' clock . Companions are summoned to attend in full dress Royal Arch clothing , and wearing the insignia of their present or past office and rank in the Order . MOTOR CAR EXHIBITION . —The armual automobile Club Exhibition which is being looked forward to with such interest by followers of what is called " Yachting on Land " will be opened at the Agricultural Hall , Islington , the first Saturday in May . All the spaces on the ground floor , Minor Hall , and Arcade have already been allotted , and a striking feature of the exhibition will be the great advance shown in the British section . The most powerful cars on view will undoubtedly be those of home manufacture , and in addition there will be a representative display of the latest productions of the leading builders in France , Germany , and Belgium .

BLUHCOAT BOYS AT THR MANSION HOUSE . —In accordance with custom on Easter Tuesday , the scholars of Christ ' s Hospital , to the number of 593 , marched to the Mansion House , where they were received by Bro . the Lord Mayor and members of the City Corporation . After taking refreshments , each received from Bro . the Lord Mayor gifts of money fresh from the Mint . Thirteen Grecians received one guinea , 45 monitors half-a-crown , and 535 rank and file one shilling each . After the ceremony Bro , thc Loid Mayor and members of the Corporation and boys attended Divine service in state at Christ Church , Newgate-street , where the Spital Sermon was preached by the Bishop of Chester .

WE ARE in receipt of a copy of the third annual edition of the illustrated guide and official list of hotels , boarding houses , & c , published by authority of the London and South Western Railway Company . The current number of the guide , which is profusely illustrated , is a handy compendium of information relative to the towns , watering places , and health resorts , served by the Company ' s railway . Copies of the edition maybe had gratuitously on application to the Traffic Superintendent at Waterloo , or at a cost of id . each from the bookstalls of Messrs . VV . H . Smith and Co . An excellent map of the country traversed by the Company ' s lines of rail is issued with the present edition of the guide .

BRO . WALTER PEACE ' S popularity as the official representative of plucky little Natal , " is well known , and it is not too much to say that he is held in the highest esteem by his brother Agents-General . It was a cheering sight on the 2 nd instant , at the St . Stephen ' s Club , to see Canada , Australia , and South Africa fraternising over the festive board . Sir Walter , as I remarked last week , had arranged to give a little dinner to Sir Kedvers Buller , the hero of Ladysmith , and Sir H . E . McCullum , the Governor elect of Natal , and amongst others he invited Lord Strathcona , Sir David

Tennant , the Hon . Henry Copeland , Sir John Cockburn , Sir Edward Wittenoom , Sir Horace Tozer , and the Hon . W . P . Reeves . A most delightful evening was spent , and the enthusiasm which prevailed when Sir Walter , who was in the chair , handed to Sir Redvers a sword of honour and a splendidly-illuminated address from the Natal colonists , together with an epergne , a pair of Louis XV . jugs , and an antique George III , cup , can be better imagined than described . Sir Walter was in his best form , and the proceedings went with a swing from start to finish . —The Citisea .

THE MEMBERS of theY . M . C . A . Camera Club entertained their relatives and friends in the lectuie-room at the new Y . M . C . A . buildings , Cardiff , on the 3 rd instant . Bro . Dr . De Vere Hunt , the president of the club , occupied the chair , and , in soite of the very inclement state of the weather , there was a large attendance . Mrs . De Vere Hunt , with the assistance of several ladies , provided tea and refreshments . The programme provided included an exhibition of lantern slides by Mr . Gilbert Buston ; songs , fa ., by members of the Y . M . C . A . Orchestral Society , under the direction of Mr . Beddoe Rees ;

selections by the Banjo Band , under the leadership of Mr . G . W . Alexander ; humorous sketches by Nir . Sid Jenkins , and a graphophone entertainment by Mr . T . W . Franklin . Among the lantern slides were some of the Paris Exhibition , photographed by Bro . Dr . De Vere Hunt ; others of Mont Blanc and the Matterhorn , taken by Mr . Turner , of Penarth , and a number of local views , lent by the Bohemian Camera Club . The society may be congratulated upon the success of the gathering . The invitation card , which was re-produced from a design by Mr . R . J . Gibbings , was of a unique and very artistic character .

THE NATIONAL TEMPERANCE LEAGUE . —The Archbishop of Canterbury will preside at the Mansion House on Monday , the 29 th instant , over the annual meeting of the National Temperance League . LONDON IRIFLE BRIGADE LODGE OF INSTRUCTION , NO . 1962 . — The first annual festival will be held at the Clarence Hotel , Aldersgate-street , E . C ., on Thursday evening , the iSth inst . Lodge will be opened at S . 30 . Master Masons only are eligible to attend .

BRO . WALTER WELLSMAN , the Chairman of the City of Lonaon Schools Committee , has issued invitations for a dinner at the Holborn Viaduct Hotel on Friday , the 19 th instant . The guests of the evening will be Bro . the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress . A FINANCIER ' S GIFT . —Mr . Allen Henrv Stoneham , a well-known City financier , of Surbiton , has commissioned Mr . F . J . Williarr son , Royal sculptor , to execute a replica of his marble statue of Queen Victoria for presentation to Western Australia for erection at Perth .

BRO . FRANK DETHRIDGE , the town clerk of Paddington , is about to vacate the position of President of the Metropolitan Municipal Officers' Association , which he has held since 1 S 99 . His successor will be Bro . Sir John Monckton , the doyen of the town clerks of the metropolis . AT Wednesday night's meeting of the Battersea Borough Council , the Baths Committee announced that Bro . Sir Charles Dilke , M . P ., had accepted an invitation of the committee to perform the ceremony of opening thc new baths and washhouses at Battersea Park-rd , on Monday , the 22 nd instant .

AT A MEETING on Wednesday at the Town Hall , Greenwich , presided over by the Mayor , Bro . Dr . Ralph Gooding , it was decided to hold a Lifeboat Saturday demonstration on June 29 th . It was also unanimously agreed to ask Lord Hugh Cecil , M . P ., who wrote regretting his absence , to become President . TUBERCULOSIS AND ITS CURE . —Under the patronage of the King , a congress on tuberculosis will be held at Queen ' s Hall , Langham-place , from July 22 nd to July 28 th . In connection with this congress it is proposed to form a temporary museum illustrating the pathology , treatment , and prevention of tuberculosis .

THE ST . _ BRIDE FOUNDATION INSTITUTE . —The life-size bust of Samuel Richardson , kindly presented to the institute by Bro . J . PasSmore Edwards , will , it is anticipated , be ready for unveiling about the middle of June . The ceremony has been appropriately undertaken by Mr . Anthony Hope Hawkins . BRO . THE EARL OF LONDESBOROUGH unveiled on Wednesday evening in the ancient parish church at Seamer , near Scarborough , a fine stained glass window , which has been placed there as a memorial of his father . It was subscribed for b y the tenantry on the estate , by whom his lordship was not only esteemed but beloved as a friend and a landlord .

THE DIRECTORS of the Grafton Ga'leries have arranged an exhibition of 130 South African pictures by Mr . R . Gwelo Goodman , wao is himself a South African colonist . The subjects will include Capetown , Mafeking , Pretoria , Johannesburg ,-Ladysmith , Tugela , Colenso , Durban , & c . The exhibition will open on Saturday , May 4 th , and continue for some time .

BRO . EARL ROBERTS has promised to open on the 9 th prox ., at the Market House , Salisbury , a three days' bazaar , which bids fair to be a brilliant and fashionable event . The object is to raise funds for a Soldiers' Institute at Bulford , which the fast extending military occupation of Salisbury Plain has rendered desirable , and £ 2000 is yet required towards the X 5000 the building will cost .

A BIG DEAL IN HORSES . —The Corporation of Glasgow , having adopted electric in place of horse traction for their extensive tramway service , and the change from one service to the other being now almost complete , are making arrangements for the disposal of their entire tramway stud . They will , therefore , commence next month to dispose of 4000 horses and a number of tramway cars .

Q UEEN ALEXANDRA arrived at Cronberg shortly after mid-day on Wednesday , and was accompanied on the journey from Frankfurt by Princess Friedrich Karl of Hesse . Her-Majesty was received at the station by Princess Victoria of Schaumburg-Lippe , Count Seckendorf , and Baron Reisehach , and drove to the Empress Frederick ' s residence . In the afternoon their Imperial Majesties walked together in the park .

A VERY successful concert in behalf of All Saints' Church , Westbrook , Margate , was given in the All Saints' Schoolroom on Wednesday , the 10 th instant , by the boys of St . John's College , of which the Rev . H . Day , M . A ., is the respected Principal . The room was well filled , and the programme , which consisted of pianoforte selections , songs , and recitations , and was highly and intelligently rendered throughout , was much appreciated .

MR . IWAN-MULLER ' S "Alfred Milner and His Work , " which , as we have already announced , is to be published by Mr . Heinemann , deals comprehensively with the South African question , which is introduced with a historical review up to the year 1 S 70 . After that date Sir Bartle Frere ' s career in South Africa is examined in detail . The narrative of the Milner regime is brought down to the date of Sir Alfred ' s departure for Pretoria .

Two HUNDRED POUNDS PRIZE AWARDED . —A committee of prominent ladies have awarded to Mrs . Emma F . A . Drake , M . D ., of Denver , U . S . A ., a prize of £ 200 for the best manuscript of a book addressed to young wives and mothers , to be a companion book to " What a Young Husband Ought to Know , " by Sylvanus Stall , D . D . The book will be issued by the Vir Publishing Co ., 7 , Imperial Arcade , Ludgate-circus , London , E . C , on the 20 th instant , and will sell at 4 s . per copy . .

THE COUNTESS OF WARWICK has been entertaining a distinguished house party at Warwick Castle for the spring races there . The guests include the Earl of Lonsdale , Lady Margaret Orr Ewing , Lady Gerard , Lady Angela Forbes , Lord Algernon Gordon-Lennox , Colonel Napier Miles , Colonel and Mrs . Calley , Captain Brinton , Sir Pery Van-Notten-Pole , Captain Cookson , Lady Crossley , Mrs . Barclay , Mrs . de VVinton , Captain Schreiber , Miss Naylor , Lady de I ' rafford , Lord Brooke , and others .

AT Monmouth , on Wednesday , Bro . Lord Llangattock , Prov . G . M ., was presented with the honorary freedom of the borough in recognition of his many benefactions to tho town . A special Corporation meeting was held in the Rolls Hall tor the occasion , and great enthusiasm ptevailed . The script was presented in a silver-gilt casket . Subsequently Bro . Lord Llangattock was entertained at a public banquet . Bro . Lord Llangattock's gifts to the town include a large public hall , gymnasium , and isolation hospital . He was Mayor of the town for two years in succession .

BRO . THE DUKE OF PORTLAND , the Duke of Norfolk , the Duke of Buccleuch , the Duke of Argyll , Bro . the Duke of Bedford , the Archbishop ot Canterbury , Earl Cadogan , the Earl of Meath , Bro . the Earl of Derby , Cardinal Vaughan , the Chief Rabbi , and other distinguished gentlemen have issued an appeal with the view of adequately endowing and establishing on a permanent basis Queen Victoria ' s Nurses ' Endowment Fund . Its object is to train nurses to attend the ~ sick poor in their homes , and her late Majesty handed over to it the . £ 70 , 000 collected as the Jubilee offering of

the women of bn ^ land . The work of the institute in London , on its present scale , involves an expenditure of about £ Sooo a year . Nearly 900 Queen's nurses are now engaged in tending the poor in their own homes in all parts of tne United Kingdom , and if only sufficient funds were forthcoming no town ' or district would be without one . But the number would have to be multiplied at least three times before the council or their fellow-countrymen can feel that they have in any sense completed the work . This would mean an additional expenditure of at least £ 20 , 000 a year , and hence the present appeal .

BRO . WALTER PEACE ' S popularity as the official representative of plucky little Natal , " is well known , and it is not too much to say that he is held in the highest esteem by his brother Agents-General . It was a cheering sight on the 2 nd instant , at the St . Stephen ' s Club , to see Canada , Australia , and South Africa fraternising over the festive board . Sir Walter , as I remarked last week , had arranged to give a little dinner to Sir Kedvers Buller , the hero of Ladysmith , and Sir H . E . McCullum , the Governor elect of Natal , and amongst others he invited Lord Strathcona , Sir David

Tennant , the Hon . Henry Copeland , Sir John Cockburn , Sir Edward Wittenoom , Sir Horace Tozer , and the Hon . W . P . Reeves . A most delightful evening was spent , and the enthusiasm which prevailed when Sir Walter , who was in the chair , handed to Sir Redvers a sword of honour and a splendidly-illuminated address from the Natal colonists , together with an epergne , a pair of Louis XV . jugs , and an antique George III , cup , can be better imagined than described . Sir Walter was in his best form , and the proceedings went with a swing from start to finish . —The Citisea .

THE MEMBERS of theY . M . C . A . Camera Club entertained their relatives and friends in the lectuie-room at the new Y . M . C . A . buildings , Cardiff , on the 3 rd instant . Bro . Dr . De Vere Hunt , the president of the club , occupied the chair , and , in soite of the very inclement state of the weather , there was a large attendance . Mrs . De Vere Hunt , with the assistance of several ladies , provided tea and refreshments . The programme provided included an exhibition of lantern slides by Mr . selections by the Banjo Band , under the leadership of Mr . G . W . Alexander ; humorous sketches by Nir . Sid Jenkins , and a graphophone entertainment by Mr . T . W . Franklin . Among the lantern slides were some of the Paris Exhibition , photographed by Bro . Dr . De Vere Hunt ; others of Mont Blanc and the Matterhorn , taken by Mr . Turner , of Penarth , and a number of local views , lent by the Bohemian Camera Club . The society may be congratulated upon the success of the gathering . The invitation card , which was re-produced from a design by Mr . R . J . Gibbings , was of a unique and very artistic character .

BRO . FRANK DETHRIDGE , the town clerk of Paddington , is about to vacate the position of President of the Metropolitan Municipal Officers' Association , which he has held since 1 S 99 . His successor will be Bro . Sir John Monckton , the doyen of the town clerks of the metropolis . AT Wednesday night's meeting of the Battersea Borough Council , the Baths Committee announced that Bro . Sir Charles Dilke , M . P ., had accepted an invitation of the committee to perform the ceremony of opening thc new baths and washhouses at Battersea Park-rd , on Monday , the 22 nd instant .

AT A MEETING on Wednesday at the Town Hall , Greenwich , presided over by the Mayor , Bro . Dr . Ralph Gooding , it was decided to hold a Lifeboat Saturday demonstration on June 29 th . It was also unanimously agreed to ask Lord Hugh Cecil , M . P ., who wrote regretting his absence , to become President . TUBERCULOSIS AND ITS CURE . —Under the patronage of the King , a congress on tuberculosis will be held at Queen ' s Hall , Langham-place , from July 22 nd to July 28 th . In connection with this congress it is proposed to form a temporary museum illustrating the pathology , treatment , and prevention of tuberculosis .

THE ST . _ BRIDE FOUNDATION INSTITUTE . —The life-size bust of Samuel Richardson , kindly presented to the institute by Bro . J . PasSmore Edwards , will , it is anticipated , be ready for unveiling about the middle of June . The ceremony has been appropriately undertaken by Mr . Anthony Hope Hawkins . BRO . THE EARL OF LONDESBOROUGH unveiled on Wednesday evening in the ancient parish church at Seamer , near Scarborough , a fine stained glass window , which has been placed there as a memorial of his father . It was subscribed for b y the tenantry on the estate , by whom his lordship was not only esteemed but beloved as a friend and a landlord .

THE DIRECTORS of the Grafton Ga'leries have arranged an exhibition of 130 South African pictures by Mr . R . Gwelo Goodman , wao is himself a South African colonist . The subjects will include Capetown , Mafeking , Pretoria , Johannesburg ,-Ladysmith , Tugela , Colenso , Durban , & c . The exhibition will open on Saturday , May 4 th , and continue for some time .

BRO . EARL ROBERTS has promised to open on the 9 th prox ., at the Market House , Salisbury , a three days' bazaar , which bids fair to be a brilliant and fashionable event . The object is to raise funds for a Soldiers' Institute at Bulford , which the fast extending military occupation of Salisbury Plain has rendered desirable , and £ 2000 is yet required towards the X 5000 the building will cost .

A BIG DEAL IN HORSES . —The Corporation of Glasgow , having adopted electric in place of horse traction for their extensive tramway service , and the change from one service to the other being now almost complete , are making arrangements for the disposal of their entire tramway stud . They will , therefore , commence next month to dispose of 4000 horses and a number of tramway cars .

Q UEEN ALEXANDRA arrived at Cronberg shortly after mid-day on Wednesday , and was accompanied on the journey from Frankfurt by Princess Friedrich Karl of Hesse . Her-Majesty was received at the station by Princess Victoria of Schaumburg-Lippe , Count Seckendorf , and Baron Reisehach , and drove to the Empress Frederick ' s residence . In the afternoon their Imperial Majesties walked together in the park .

A VERY successful concert in behalf of All Saints' Church , Westbrook , Margate , was given in the All Saints' Schoolroom on Wednesday , the 10 th instant , by the boys of St . John's College , of which the Rev . H . Day , M . A ., is the respected Principal . The room was well filled , and the programme , which consisted of pianoforte selections , songs , and recitations , and was highly and intelligently rendered throughout , was much appreciated .

MR . IWAN-MULLER ' S "Alfred Milner and His Work , " which , as we have already announced , is to be published by Mr . Heinemann , deals comprehensively with the South African question , which is introduced with a historical review up to the year 1 S 70 . After that date Sir Bartle Frere ' s career in South Africa is examined in detail . The narrative of the Milner regime is brought down to the date of Sir Alfred ' s departure for Pretoria .

Two HUNDRED POUNDS PRIZE AWARDED . —A committee of prominent ladies have awarded to Mrs . Emma F . A . Drake , M . D ., of Denver , U . S . A ., a prize of £ 200 for the best manuscript of a book addressed to young wives and mothers , to be a companion book to " What a Young Husband Ought to Know , " by Sylvanus Stall , D . D . The book will be issued by the Vir Publishing Co ., 7 , Imperial Arcade , Ludgate-circus , London , E . C , on the 20 th instant , and will sell at 4 s . per copy . .

THE COUNTESS OF WARWICK has been entertaining a distinguished house party at Warwick Castle for the spring races there . The guests include the Earl of Lonsdale , Lady Margaret Orr Ewing , Lady Gerard , Lady Angela Forbes , Lord Algernon Gordon-Lennox , Colonel Napier Miles , Colonel and Mrs . AT Monmouth , on Wednesday , Bro . Lord Llangattock , Prov . G . M ., was presented with the honorary freedom of the borough in recognition of his many benefactions to tho town . A special Corporation meeting was held in the Rolls Hall tor the occasion , and great enthusiasm ptevailed . The script was presented in a silver-gilt casket . Subsequently Bro . Lord Llangattock was entertained at a public banquet . Bro . Lord Llangattock's gifts to the town include a large public hall , gymnasium , and isolation hospital . He was Mayor of the town for two years in succession .

THE DUKE OF PORTLAND , the Duke of Norfolk , the Duke of Buccleuch , the Duke of Argyll , Bro . the Duke of Bedford , the Archbishop ot Canterbury , Earl Cadogan , the Earl of Meath , Bro . the Earl of Derby , Cardinal Vaughan , the Chief Rabbi , and other distinguished gentlemen have issued an appeal with the view of adequately endowing and establishing on a permanent basis Queen Victoria ' s Nurses ' Endowment Fund . Its object is to train nurses to attend the ~ sick poor in their homes , and her late Majesty handed over to it the . £ 70 , 000 collected as the Jubilee offering of

the women of bn ^ land . The work of the institute in London , on its present scale , involves an expenditure of about £ Sooo a year . Nearly 900 Queen's nurses are now engaged in tending the poor in their own homes in all parts of tne United Kingdom , and if only sufficient funds were forthcoming no town ' or district would be without one . But the number would have to be multiplied at least three times before the council or their fellow-countrymen can feel that they have in any sense completed the work . This would mean an additional expenditure of at least £ 20 , 000 a year , and hence the present appeal .
