Masonic Notes .

VVe heartily congratulate Bro . Viscount Dungarvan , eldest son of Bro . the Earl of Cork and Orrery , on his appointment by the Prince of Wales , M . W . G . M ., to the office of Provincial Grand Master of Somersetshire , vacant by the death of the Earl of Carnarvon .

In succeeding so distinguished a Mason in so important an office his lordship will find it a difficult task to emulate the merits of his brilliant predecessor , but he will certainly command the sympathy and loyal support of

the brethren he presides over , and having already attained distinction in one branch of Masonry , vve doubt not he will prove equally successful in his new position .

Bro . James Morrison McLeod , vvho headed the poll by so large a majority at the recent contest for the vacant office of Secretary of the Royal Masonic Institution for Boys , will enter upon his duties to-morrow

( Saturday ) . He has everything in his favour . He is well known in several of the provinces , from which section of the Craft he derived his chief support . He is also well known in London . He is believed to be a

man of great energy and ability , and will be actuated by a desire to emulate the achievements of his energetic predecessor . We dare say the Governors and Subscribers will give him every encouragement , and in all

probability we shall find him , ere many months are past , firmly settled in his position and thoroughly well posted in his duties , fie has our hearty good wishes for a long and successful career . * * *

We offer our hearty congratulations to the respected and popular Provincial Grand Master of Middlesex—Bro . Col . Sir Francis Burdett , Bart . —on the recent coming of age of his eldest son and heir , Mr . Francis Burdett . The event vvas celebrated with all possible

eclat at Great Dalb y , the Burdett family having been always esteemed as landlords , and having been on the best of terms with their tenants . Bro . Col . Sir F . Burdett , Bart , presided at the banquet , which vvas held

in a spacious tent in rear of the Royal Oak Hotel , and tlie proceedings passed off most enthusiastically , a right cordial welcome being extended both to Sir Francis and his eldest son .

The St . Edmondsbury Masonic Hall at Bury St . Edmunds , in vvhich the Royal St . Edmunds Lodge , No . 1008 , will in future hold its meetings , vvas opened on the 15 th ult ., amid considerable rejoicing . There was a large muster of members and visitors present

under the presidency of Bro . John G . Oliver , P . M ., P . Prov . S . G . W . Suffolk , the respected D . P . G . M ., Bro . the Rev . C . J . Martyn , being unable to attend , and when the ceremony vvas over a banquet was held , at

vvhich the usual loyal and Masonic toasts vvere duly honoured . We vvish the Royal St . Edmunds Lodge a long and happy life in its new quarters . * * *

The north-east corner stone of the new north aisle of Mexborough Parish Church vvas laid with Masonic honours last week in the presence of a large company of ladies and gentlemen . Arrangements had been made that the stone-laying should be invested vvith a

ceremony of more than special interest , and the services of the Masonic body were requisitioned . Under the banner of the Phcenix Lodge , No . 904 , a large number of the Craft gathered from many parts of West

Yorkshire . The Rev . Canon Bullock , M . A ., P . P . G . Chaplain , preached , and the Provincial Grand Master , Bro . Tew , performed the ceremony and delivered an address . A banquet afterwards took place , and the whole of the proceedings vvere successfully carried out .

At the meeting of the Calcutta Emulation Lodge of Improvement in Freemasons' Hall , Calcutta , Bro . W . H . Fitze , Past Preceptor , and Bros . H . M . Rustomji , Secretary , and D . N . Pundit , Treasurer , were severally presented vvith handsome jewels

in recognition of the important services which they had rendered to the lodge , vvhich , as may be gathered from its name , is modelled on the lines of our Emulation Lodge of Improvement in London . There vvas a numerous attendance of members , and the

companion tary remarks of Bro . I homas Jones , the new Preceptor , in making the presentations were very warmly applauded . The jewel received by Bro . Fitze vvas a Past Master ' s jewel , while those given to Bros . Rustomji and Pundit were Past Masters' jewels with

the cross-pens indicative of the Secretarial office in the case of Bro . Rustomji , and the key in that of Bro . Pundit . All three brethren heartily expressed their appreciation of the honour done them , and their readiness to render any further services in their power to the lodge .

We learn from the Sydney Freemason that the day fixed for the inauguration of the Grand Lodge of Tas . mania was the 26 th of June . The ceremony vvas appointed to take place in Hobart , the capital , and vvas to be performed by Bro , Lord Carrington ,

M . W . G . M .. of the United Grand Lodge of New South Wales , who would be supported by Bro . the Earl of Kintore , M . W . G . M . South Australia , and Bro . Sir W . J . Clarke , Bart ., M . W . G . M . of the United Grand Lod ge of Victoria . It vvas also hoped that Bro . Chief Justice

Way , Past Grand Master and Pro Grand Master of South Australia , would be present . Thus the new Grand Lodge will have been constituted under the most favourable conditions , and though it consists of onl y some - ] 0 lodges will no doubt prosper .

* * * The first Grand Master is Bro . the Rev . R . D . Poulett-Harris , M . A ., till recently District G . Master of the District Grand Lodge under the English Constitution , so that our Tasmanian brethren will start on their career under an experienced Craftsman .

Master was always very pleased to see the brethren , more especially the youngest initiates in the lodges , to whom he extended the right hand of fellowship . The Dep . G . Master was also constantly visiting the various lodges , and thc brethren knew that he took
