Masonic Notes .

In the unavoidable absence of Earl Amherst , M . W . Pro Grand Master , Gen . J . Wimburn Laurie , M . P ., Prov . G . M . South Wales ( W . D . ) , presided at the Quarterly Communication of United Grand Lodge which was held at Freemasons' Hall on Wednesday

when having regard to the time of year , there was a fair attendance of the Grand Officers , Present and Past , as well as of tbe representatives of the private lodges . The resolution of sympathy with his Royal Highness the M . W . Grand Master , on the death of his eldest sister the Empress Frederick of Germany , which

waa proposed from the chiir , was adopted nem . con ., as also was a similar vote to His Majesty , the King , as "Protector . " So , also , were the motions relating to the clandestine lodge established by the Grand Lodge of Hamburg in the city of Copenhagen , within

the jurisdiction of the Grand Lodge of Denmark , as recommended in the message of the Grand Master . The rest of the business on the paper of Agenda having been transacted , Grand Lodge was closed . A full report of the proceedings will be found in another column .

* # * The Quarterly Communication of the Mark Grand Lodge was held at Mark Masons' Hall on Tuesday , the 3 rd instant , under the presidency of the Earl of Euston , M . W . Pro G . M . M . A resolution of sympathy with his Royal Highness the M . W . Grand Mark

Master , similar to that adopted by United Grand Lodge , as mentioned in the preceding Note , was similarly adopted , a tribute of respect being also paid to the memory of Bro . Rt . Hon . W . W . B . Beach , M . P ., Past G . M . M . j and then the Report of the

General Board , to the principal points of which we referred in our Notes of last week , was dealt with and adopted . It will be seen from our report elsewhere that the name of the new Mar ' : Lodge , No . 549 , is Prosonno Coomar Dutt , not Dalt , as it was printed in our last issue .

Masonic Notes.

Not for the first time in his career has Bro . Bullock , son of Bro . Bullock , P . M ., Secretary , and one of the founders of the United Northern Counties Lodge , No . 2128 , and the first initiate of that lodge , had his gallantry in saving life at sea recognised . In 1888 he was awarded the bronze medal of the Board

of Trade , and in 1893 its silver medal for saving life by swimming among sharks , in the former case off the coast of Chili and in the latter off Colon . The other day he was presented by the Local Marine Board of Liverpool , on behalf of the King of Sweden , with a pair of binoculars for rescuing the crew , to the

number of 14 all told , of a Norwegian sailing barque , laden with coal , and in a sinking condition , which he sighted in the Atlantic when four days out from Liverpool . The operation was a particularly difficult one owing to the dangerous cross seas at the time , but Captain Bullock stuck to his work manfully , and all were safely hauled onboard his ship and subsequently

landed at Fayal ( Azores ) . We congratulate Bro . Bullock , sen ., on having such a son ; the United Northern Counties Lodge on being in a position to number among its initiates and members so gallant a sailor ; and last , but not least , Bro . Captain Bullock on the handsome testimonial to his gallantry which he has just received and so richly merits .

* * # We have received a printed copy of the Minutes of the Proceedings at a Special Communication of the District Grand Lodge of Northern China , which was held in the Masonic Hall , Shanghai , on the 2 nd July , under the presidency of Bro . Lewis Moore , Dist . G .

Master , who was well supported by his officers , there being also a numerous body of visitors from the lodges in the District , as well as from the Ancient Landmark Lodge , holding under the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts , and the Cosmopolitan Lodge , No . 428 on the roll of the Grand Lodge of Scotland , and from other lodges under the same Constitulion .

» The meeting was , indeed , a most important one having been convened for the express purpose of presenting Bro . Cornelius Thorne , Past Dist . G . M ., with a souvenir of the respect and affection in which he is held by the brethren in Northern China , not only of

the English , but also of the Scottish and Massachusetts Constitutions , the souvenir being the gift of the members of all the three bodies . As we have already been able , thanks to the courtesy of Bro . R . F . Gould , P . G . D ., a friend of Bro . Thorne of more than 40 years' standing , and an oldassociate of his in Masonry

in China , to publish full particulars 01 the meeting as well as of the banquet by which it was followed , Ihere is no need for us to give any excerpts from the report . Suffice it to say , that the speech of the District Grand Master in making the presentation , and that of Bro Thorne in accepting it , were worthy of the occasion ,

We may , however , be permitted to reiterate the hope so well and fervently expressed by the tormer that Bro . Thorne may be spared for many years in the enjoyment of good health and retaining the loye an I respect he bas been held in for so long . » * *

It is evident , from tbe minutes of the proceedings at the regular Communication of the District Grand Lodge of Queensland , which was held at the Masonic Hall , Brisbane , on the 5 th July last , under the presi . dency of Bro . the Hon . Augustus C . Gregory , C . M . G ., Dist . G . M ., that , as regards its finances , the District is

very favourably circumstanced . The Disttict Grand Treasurer's quarterly report of the General Fund , which , in his absence , was presented by Bro . A . J . Stephenson , Past Dist . G . W ., showed a balance to the good of over . 6374 , and that of the Benevolent Fund one of over £ 1442 , while the Biard of Benevolence

reported lhat the Funds at their disposal and at present in bank , on deposit , and invested , ¦ amounted to ^ 3309 4 s . 66 ., there being . 6315 of this in the Savings ' Bank , . £ 112 7 in Commercial Bank , ^ 1068 on fixed deposit in the latter , and . £ 799 Saving s' Bank Stock ,

One other item of interest may also be mentioned , namely , that since the previous Comm unication in March the Dist . ' G . M . had consecrated two new lodges at Kilkivan and Nananzo respectively , and express . d the satisfaction he felt at the interest taken in thc Craft in those places .

» * We acknowledge receipt of a circular letter issued by Bro . L . J . Baker , M . W . G . Master of Iowa , in which he states that he has authorise 1 Bro . Newton R . Parvin , Deputy G . Secretary , to discharge the duties of Grand

Secretary , to which office the late lamented and venerable Bro . Theodore S . Parvin was re-appointed at the recent annual communication on the first Tuesday in June and two following days . We have also received a short " In Memoriam" record , with appropriate

Masonic Notes.

Introduction , of our late distinguished brother , whose connection with the Craft began in the year 1838 , when H . R . H . the Duke of Sussex was our Grand Master , and some years before the Grand Lodge of Iowa was constituted .

The annual meeting of the Provincial Grand Lodge of Cheshire will be held at the Public Hall , West Kirby , on Wednesday , the 18 th instant , when the Hon . Alan de Tatton Egerton , M . P ., Prov . Grand Master , will appoint and invest his officers for the ensuing year . Among the other business to be transacted will be the presentation of Charity jewels and bars , and a

presentation will also be made to Bro . H . G . Small on his retirement from office . The annual report of the Committee of Benevolence will be received in relation to the Provincial Fund of Benevolence , the Cheshire Masonic Benevolent Institution , and the Cheshire MasOnic Educational Institution , and a collection will be made in the Iodge room for the p urposes of the Cheshire Masonic Charities .

« * » The printed report of the proseedings of the Provincial Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Freemasonry in India under Scotland at the convocations which were held at Freemasons' Hall , Bombay , on the 4 th and 18 th March respectively , have lately reached

us , and contain particulars which show that the Scottish Royal Arch is fairly prospferous . ' Comp . K . R . Cama , the Grand Superintendent , presided at both meetings . At the earlier of the two , Comp . D . R . Chichgur drew attention to the progress which Royal Arch Masonry had made since 1891 , when the present

Prov . Grand Scribe E . was appointed to his office . Then the number of chapters on the roll was only seven , now there were 15 ; while the funds of Prov . G . Chapter had also largely increased , the balance standing to its credit in Mirch , 1893 , having been 402 Rupees , whereas now , it amounted to about 1200 .

Rupees , and that , too , notwithstanding the large grants whice had been made to the Hall Building Fund , the Scottish Masonic Benevolent Association in India , and other deserving objects . The Prov . Grand Committee therefore recommended that tlu Prov . Grand Scribe .

E . ' s honorarium should be increased by 25 Rupees per month . It also recommended that a donation of 200 Rupees should be voted to th ? Scottish Masonic Benevolent Association in India . The Committee ' s report and with it , of course , these recoirmehdations were adopted .

* * The Grand Superintendent , in the course of his address , stated that according to the table of Returns for the half-year to 30 th September , 1900 , all the Chapters had sent in their Returns , but that three of them had not paid their dues . He was also in a

position to announce that during the past year there had been a gain in membership of 52 . Eight of the chapters showed an increase , in three there was no change , and in four there was a slight tailing off . The number of subscribing companions , as shown in the

appendix to the proceedings on the 18 th March , was 444 , or very nearly 30 per chapter . In the course of the proceedings H . E . Lord Northcote , G . Superintendent of Devonshire , was , on the motion of the G . Superintendent , elected an Honorary Member of the Prov . Grand Chapter .

# * # The meeting on the 18 th March was the annual Convocation when the companions who had been nominated as ollice-bears of Provincial Grand Chapter for the ensuing year were installed in office—at least , thoseof them who were able to be present . Among those

companions we find included Comp . the Hon . J . Tate , who was obligated and invested as Depute G . Superintendent , and Comp . Capt . C . D . Wise , who retains the oUice he has held for so many years to the great advantage of the Scottish Royal Arch in India , namely , that of Prov . G . Scribe E . Before closing Provincial

Grand Chapter , the Grand Superintendent suggested that the companions should salute the Depute Grand Superintendent and the Prov . G . H . and J . ; and these o fficers were accordingly saluted . The Grand Superintendent remarked that he saw no reason why this

innovation should not be introduced , while , at the same time , he said that , in the event of any question being raised about it in Supreme Grand Chapter , he should take Upon himself the whole responsibility for the introduction . » •

We call attention to a most interesting letter from Bro . E . D . Shorto on the subject of " Mirk Benevolent Finance . " It is most temperately written , and as other brethren will doubtless favour us with their views thereon , we trust those who do so will be as temperate and argumentative as the writer .
