Masonic Notes .
There is seldom a large gathering at the September Communication of Grand Lodge , and Wednesday ' s meeting was no exception to the rule . But if the attendance was not numerous and the business appointed to be done not of very urgent importance ,
those present had the unusual opportunity of welcoming the chiefs of three separate and independent jurisdictions in North America , namely , Bro . Clifford P . McCalla , G . Master of Pennsylvania ; Bro . T . W . Robertson , G . Master of Canada for the Province of
Ontario ; and Bro . Horner , G . Master of Louisiana . It is almost needless to say that the welcome accorded to these distinguished brethren was most cordial and that , in severally acknowled ging the honour done them
they one and all expressed themselves as gratified beyond measure at the opportunity afforded them of being present . •? * *
As regards the proceedings , it will be seen that the resolution expressing the deep regret of Grand Lodge at the death of the late Earl of Carnarvon , Pro Grand Master , and its sympathy with the widowed Countess of Carnarvon and the other members of the late earl ' s
family , was proposed by the Grand Master in the chair , Bro . Col . Marmaduke Ramsay , Dist . Grand Master of Malta , in the name ofthe Prince of Wales , and carried without a dissentient voice , a rider being attached to the effect that a copy of such resolution shall be transmitted to the Countess of Carnarvon .
* * * With reference to the applications for recognition by the Grand Lodge of England received from the bodies

styling themselves the Grand Lodge of New Zealand and the Grand Lodge of Tasmania respectively , that of the latter , which has been established by the practically unanimous action of all the lodges and brethren in the colony was received with favour , and the desired
recognition was unhesitatingly accorded . That of the Grand Lodge of New Zealand , however , the establishment of which is very far indeed from having been brought about by the practically unanimous action of the lodges and brethren in the colony , was rejected .
This is only what we anticipated would be the result if any such application were made . Our Grand Lodge is ready enough to recognise newly-established colonial Grand Lodges when it has reason to believe that the Craft in the colony or colonies in question is to all
intents and purposes unanimous in its desire for autonomy . But it will do nothing to encourage movements which , having only the voice of a mere majority to back them up , are calculated to do more harm than good to the interests of Freemasonry .
It will be seen from our report of the proceedings at the annual meeting , at Beaminster , on the 26 th ult ., of the Provincial Grand Lodge of Dorsetshire , that a resolution was passed to the effect that in future ladies be invited to be present at the banquet , which
takes place towards the close of the day when Provincial Grand Lodge has been closed and all business is at an end . This is certainly an innovation on Masonic custom in such matters , but we do not think any reasonable objection can be taken to its adoption . Ladies are
present in the galleries at our Anniversary Festivals while the toast list is being gone through , and it appears to us to be only a step further along the path of gallantry when we invite them to be present at the festive board . * * *
Whatever may be thought of the present innovation , we know it is but the revival of an old custom , and one which ought never to have been dropped . The more we can interest the ladies in our fraternity the
better , and at the festive board it appears to us their presence would not only prove most acceptable , but be the means of enlisting their sympathies all the more in relation to our Charities , both local and general .
* * * The Provincial Grand Lodge of Sussex will be held at Eastbourne Town Hall on Friday , the 24 th October next , when Bro . Sir W . T- Marriott , Q . C , M . P ., Dep . P . G . M ., will preside , in the unavoidable absence of
H . R . H . the Duke of Connaught , Provincial Grand Master , whose numerous engagements will prevent him visiting his province until . sometime early in the course of next year .
On Sunday last , the Freemasons of Leicestershire , with a number of visiting brethren , attended Divine service at St . George ' s Church , Leicester , it being to the very day the 100 th anniversary of the issue of the warrant constituting certain brethren named therein a
lodge of Freemasons by the style and title of St . John ' s Lodge , Leicester , now ranking as . No . 279 on the roll of our United Grand Lodge . About 200 brethren were present , prominent among them being Bros . William Kelly , F . S . A ., P . P . G . M . of Leicestershire and Rutland ,
and W . M . of the St . John ' s Lodge ; S . S . Partridge , P . A . G . D . C . England , D . P . G . M . ; and the Rev . C . J . Martyn , P . G . C . England , and D . P . G . M . Suffolk , who preached a most eloquent sermon on the occasion . The church was crowded , and the route by which the
brethren marched to and from church in procession was thronged with spectators ' . The offertory which followed the sermon , and was in aid of the Children ' s
Hospital , Leicester , realised not far short of ^ 40 . We believe the festivities in connection with the centenary celebration of St . John ' s Lodge will take place sometime in November .
* * * In consequence of the meeting of the British Association being held this year in Leeds , it has been decided that there shall be a Masonic conversazione in the Masonic Hall , Great George-street , at 8 . 30 p . m ., on
Monday next , the Sth inst ., at which , from the known character of our Leeds brethren , members of the Association who happen to be Masons will meet with a hearty welcome . Craft clothing only will be worn .
Tickets , to admit a brother and lad y , and any further information that may be desired , can be had of Bros . J . W . Fourness , P . M ., P . P . G . Treas ., and W . Watson , P . P . G . S . of W ., Honorary Secretaries of the Reception Committee .
A circular has been issued by command of Bro . Sir W . J . Clarke , Bart ., M . W . Grand Master of the United G . * and Lodge of Victoria , in which that distinguished

brother expresses his desire that as a token of respect to the memory of the late Bro . the Earl of Carnarvon , to whose advice and assistance in bringing about the
union of the different Constitutions in the Colony the Grand Lodge of Victoria is so greatly indebted , members of lodges in the jurisdiction will wear mourning for a period of three months from ist July last .
At the annual meeting of the Great Priory of the Knights Templars of Canada , held on the 15 th July , 1890 , the allocution of the revered Grand Master , Col . XV . J . McLeod Moore , G . C . T ., was less historical than
usual , though full of interest as all his addresses are . The printing of this eagerly Iooked-for deliverance on matters relating to the Order , seems to have been rather long delayed , but we have been favoured with a perusal of an early copy of the allocution in MS .
Colonel Moore speaks in the highest terms of the work by our able Bro . J . Ross Robertson , now Grand Master of Canada ( Ontario ) , stating that it " is most exhaustive , interesting , and replete in all its details as an authentic history of the Order of our Canadian-British
system . " This praise is well deserved from the greatest Templar authority in the Dominion , or possibly elsewhere , and we congratulate the Grand Master —who is now once more personally with us—accordingly . * * *
One of the recommendations of Colonel Moore , however , more immediately concerns us , viz . ; " I would ask Great Priory as a compliment to the hi ghest Masonic authority and historian of England , and of the world , Frater William James Hughan , who has
invariably spoken so warmly , and interested himself so much on the success of the Templar system of Canada , to elect him an honorary member of this Great Priory as a slig ht mark of the appreciation we all feel for his Masonic principles and learning . " This , we need not
add , was agreed to heartily and unanimously , and the rank of Past Preceptor and Past Provincial Prior was also conferred . Bro . Hughan ' s many friends will gladly hail these honorary appointments , and unite in hoping with his old and attached friend , Col . Moore , that his life may be long spared to the Craft .
* * * Since writing the above , we deeply regret to learn by a cablegram from Canada , received on Wednesday last by M . W . Bro . J . Ross Robertson , that M . E . Frater Col . J . B . Macleod Moore , Grand Master
of the Templars of Canada , died on Monday , the ist inst . j at his late residence at Prescott , Ontario . Col . Moore ' s demise will be deeply regretted . As a Masonic student and writer , and exponent of Craft lore and Templarism , his work commanded the
attention of the Craft in all jurisdictions . His death will be deeply felt not only in Canada but in Great Britain , and we feel assured that the Craft of this country will join with M . W . Bro . Robertson in his cable to the family of the deceased Templar expressive
of deep sympathy in their great and inevitable loss . The work of the Grand Master will be carried on b y M . W . Bro . James A . Henderson , the Deputy Grand Master . * * ; i : Col . Moore has not been in the best of health for
some months , and though able to preside at the last meeting of the great priory of Canada , at Kingston , in July , he was far from well , and suffered considerabl y from trouble in his right foot , which gave him great pain , and for months has rendered him practicall y
helpless . # # * We are favoured in London this week with the presence of three distinguished American visitors—Bros . Clifford P . McCalla , Grand Master of Pennsylvania , and editor of the well-known Masonic paper , the
Keystone ; Joseph T . Horner , Past Grand Master of Louisiana ; and J . Ross Robertson , Grand Master of Canada . The two former attended the United Northern Counties Lodge on Tuesday evening , accompanied by Bro . W . J . Hughan , P . G . D ., and their reception was of the most cordial and hearty character .
* * * All were present at the Quarterly Communication of Grand Lodge on Wednesday evening , and were received with the honours due to their rank .
* * * It is somewhat unfortunate that our visitors should have selected this season of the year , when all who can are away by the seaside enjoying themselves ; but we trust that the reception by the No . 2128 on
Tuesday , the Grand Lodge on Wednesday , and the Quatuor Coronati Lodge on Thursday , will , as respects warmth and unmistaken sincerity , in some measure make up for the lack of numbers , and prove how much we in old England esteem the visits of our friends from across the " Bi g Pond . "
