Tower Stairs To The Vosges.

down to Coblentz , and until 1 turned in about midnig ht I had the pleasure of being their guest . Captain Wcyer took me to a festal meeting of soldiers in the evening , men of all ranks , on the active list , and retired . It was a most enthusiastic gathering ; how instantly one stood up when they played and sang our " God save the Queen . "

The following afternoon I joined my Rhine boat , homeward bound , and feeling at peace with the countries I had visited , the friends I had met , and—myself , I quietly slept until we reached Bonn , aud then we had a long evening at Cologne , the boat having some extra cargo to receive , giving time to hear a most beautiful service at the Cathedral and to renew acquaintance with that ever charming city . Its splendid railway station always strikes me as one of the finest I liave ever seen—even Euston falls a little short of it .

( Or . TiXE—TIIE CKNTH . U . RAILWAY STATION , ' ¦ Next day we pulled np the arreai'S and reached Rotterdam " on time , " as our American cousins say—3 . 15 p . m . —just right for a good train to Amsterdam , a capital place to end your Continental wanderings at , as they readily take money of any nationality , and give full value for it , too .

Next day it did rain- —quite made up for my long spell of magnificent weather—but they take it quite as a matter of course in the city of canals . Capital value in the evening ; opera bouffe , in Dutch , at the theatre , so well acted that one could have a fair idea of the plot , but when the ballet came on , and the premiere danseuse executed a pas seal , she fairly shock the stage—regular Dutch build .

Next morning was all sunshine after the shower (!) , and I embarked on board the Biltem ( G . S . N . Co . ) , a very comfortable steamer and a good sea boat , and crossed the North Sea in fairly smooth water and in good time . The only delay we had was in the

Thames , from the excessive rummaging of the shi p by the Excise officers , and a close examination by a detective from Scotland Yard , on the look-out for dynamiters—the scare was on then—but , after all , we got up in onr regnlati-in time of five-aud-twenty hours , and disembarked—all well—at the Tower Stairs .
