Freemasonry In 1896.

Lodge of Friendship , No . 2618 , Helena Vale , under the District G . Lodge of Western Australia , the Etckwine , No . 2623 , at Durban , in the District of Natal ; and the Perseverance , No . 2628 , Molteno , S . Africa ( E . D . )

The proceedings in Grand Lodge have been of an interesting , and in some respects , of an important character , but happily tor the credit of the Craft , we have escaped that most terrible of inflictions—a contested election for the office of G . Treasurer .

In March a resolution of condolence with her Majesty the Queen and her youngest daughter , Princess Beatrice ( Princess Henry of Battenberg ) on the lamentable death , from fever contracted while serving with the forces against Ashantee , of Prince Henry of Battenberg , was adopted unanimously , on the motion of Bro .

the Earl of Lathom , Pro Grand Master , who was in the chair , seconded by Bro . the Ear ! of Mount Edgcumbe , Deputy G . Master , and while on this subject we may add that acknowledgments of the address were received at a subsequent communication , and ordered to be recorded on the minutes . Another

resolution was also adopted at the March meeting , to the effect that the Grand Lodge -of England strongly disapproved of the practice which has so largely prevailed of late years of convassing and touting at the annual elections . The motion was brought forward by Bro . W . F . Lamonby , and seconded by Bro . the Rev . R .

J . Simpson , Past G . Chaplain , and though a slight modification of the wording was suggested by Bro . Lennox Browne , the resolution in its original form was carried without a dissentient voice . The other circumstances to be recorded in connection

with this meeting are the election by acclamation , for the 2 znd time , of H . R . H . the Prince of Wales , K . G ., as M . W . G . Master , and that of Bro . W . H . Bailey , the only brother nominated in December for the office of Grand Treasurer for the ensuing 12 months . At the Grand Festival which was celebrated on the

29 th April , the opportunity was taken to commemorate the fact of his Royal Highness the M . W . Grand Master having occupied the throne of G . Lodge for a period of 21 years , by conferring brevet rank as Past Grand Officers upon 21 Masons of distinction , among the brethren thus honoured being the Speaker of

the House of Commons , Bro . the Right Hon . W . C . Gully , Q-C , M . P ., and the Lord Mayor of London , Bro . Sir W . Wilkin , who were made Past G . Wardens ; Bro . C . Swinfen Eady , LL . D ., Q . C , who received the rank of Past Deputy G . Registrar ; Bros . Sir W . Neville Abdy , Bart ., and Col . William Campbell , Royal

Marine Artillery , A . D . C . to the Camp , who were made Past G . Deacons ; and Bro . J . Morrison McLeod , Secretary of the Royal Masonic Institution for Boys , who received the distintion of P . G . S . B . Among those who received Grand rank it is not necessary we should say more than that Bro . the Earl of Mount Edgcumbe ,

having , to the regret of the whole Craft , expressed to his Royal Highness the M . W . Grand Master his desire not to be re-appointed to the office of Deputy G . Master , which for the previous five years he had held with such distinction , Bro . Earl Amherst , Prov . G . Master of Kent , was selected to fill the vacancy ; and we

need hardly add that the appointment is extremely popular with the brethren , In June , with a view to making the commemoration of the Prince of Wales ' s long tenure of the G . Mastership general throughout the jurisdiction of G . Lodge , Article 87 of the Book of Constitutions was suspended with a view to enabling Provincial and District Grand Masters to confer brevet rank as

Past Prov . or Past Dist . G . Officers in the proportion of one for every 10 lodges under their control on brethren deemed worthy of such distinction , and at the meetings of the different Prov . and Dist . G . Lodges which have since been held , appointments in accordance with this arrangemnt have been made , an

additional brother being thus honoured in the case of those Provinces and Districts in which there are , in addition to one or more complete sections of 10 lodges , a broken section of more than five lodges , At the same meeting it was announced that Bros . W . H . Lee and Neville Green , Senior Clerks in the Grand

Secretary ' s office , had found it necessary in consequence of the state of their health , to resign their . appointments , and on the recommendation of the Board of General Purposes , Grand Lodge was pleased to award them pensions of £ 220 and £ 190 respectively , two additional clerks being appointed at salaries of

; £ ioo each , while two already on the staff had their emoluments increased . On the 29 th July , a Special Communication of Grand Lodge was called for the purpose of receiving a message from the G . Master on the subject of Masonry in New Zealand , and of considering a resolution recommended in that message to the

effect that with a view to retoring harmony among the different Masonic bodies in that Colony , his Royal Highness be requested to take such steps for the recognition of the G . Lodge of New

Zealand " as he may consider consistent with the honour of this Grand Lodge , and with just consideration for the lodges which ; nay desire to retain their connection with Grand Lodge of England . " The resolution was moved by Bro . the Earl of

Freemasonry In 1896.

Lathom , Pro G . Master , from the chair , and seconded by Bro . the Earl of Onslow , Prov . G . Master for Surrey , who , it will be remembered , was Governor of New Zealand at the time the scheme for establishing a local G . Lodge was brought forward , and would undoubtedly have been its first G . Master had a greater number

of the then existing lodges in the Colony taken part in the movement . A long and animated debate ensued , in the course of which Bros . S . R . Baskett , Richard Eve , and others , expressed their opposition , while two New Zealand brethren , members of lodges under the English Constitution , earnestly appealed to G .

Lodge to adopt it , on the ground that as recognition was inevitable , it was better to grant it freely and with practical unanimity . In the end , an amendment , in which Bro . Eve moved the insertion of certain words which , in his opinion ,. would have the effect of making the terms and conditions of recognition clearer

and more precise , was defeated by an overwhelming majority and the original resolution as moved from the chair was carried " almost unanimously . " A sum of 500 guineas was subsequently voted , on the proposition of Bro . C . E . Keyser , P . G . D ., towards the re-endowment of Guy ' s Hospital , in which the Prince of

Wales , M . W . G . M ., was taking so prominent a part . In September certain regulations of the Eoyal Masonic Benevolent Institution , relating to the votes given in return for the Grand Lodge and Grand Chapter grants , as amended at a special

general meeting of the Governors and Subscribers of that Charity , were adopted , while in December little else was done than to make the customary nominations for the offices of M . W . Grand Master and Grand Treasurer .

Among the other principal events of the year must be mentioned the installation of Bro . the Hon . Sir Stafford Northcote , Prov . G . Master of Devonshire , in succession to Bro . Viscount Ebrington . The ceremony took place in Exeter on the 12 th August , and when the retiring Prov . G . Master had inducted

his successor into the chair , a cordial vote of thanks was passed to him by acclamation for the many and signal services he had rendered to the Craft during the 17 or 18 years he had presided over the lodges in Devon . Bro . John Locke , too , was installed

as District G . Master of Barbadoes , in succession to Bro . Col . John Elliott , C . B ., resigned , the ceremony being performed by his Excellency Bro . Sir James Shaw Hay , K . C . M . G ., the Governor of the Island . We notice also that several new Masonic Halls

have been dedicated in different parts of the country , among them being those of the Hall erected at Penzance , by Mount Sinai Lodge , No . 121 , and of the new Freemasons' Hall , Exeter , by Bro . G . C . Davie , Dep . Prov . G . M . of Devonshire ; of the hall at Minehead , by Bro . Viscount Dungarvan , Past G . M . of

Somersetshire ; and of the new hall at Consett , by Bro . the Rev . Canon Tristram , D . D ., Dep . P . G . M . of Durham ; while at Ilkley , in West Yorkshire , the first stone of a new hall was laid with Masonic ceremonial by Bro . Gaunt , P . P . G . D . The following lodges have celebrated the centenary of their constitution ,

namely , the Lodge of Perseverance , No . 213 , Norwich , which was warranted by the " Ancients " in 1795 ; Prince Frederick Lodge , No . 307 , Hebden Bridge ; Prince George Lodge , No . 308 , Todmorden ; and the Harmony Lodge , No . 309 , Fareham ; while among those which have celebrated their jubilee , or 50 th

anniversary , are the Lodge of Honour , No . 526 , Wolverhampton , and that of Semper Fidelis , No . 529 , Worcester , the latter being honoured on the occasion with the privilege of entertaining the Provincial Grand Lodge , of which it is a member . Of the many brethren who have been honoured during the year with

testimonials of one kind or another we may mention that in January the Huddersfield Lodge , No . 290 , presented Bro . John Harrop , P . P . G . W ., Chairman of the Charity Committee of West Yorkshire , with his portrait and an illuminated address ; and that about the same time a special meeting of the Provincial

Grand Lodge of Suffolk was held at Ipswich , when an address in the form of an album , a Prov . G . Master ' s jewel , and silver candlesticks were tendered to Bro . Lord Henniker , Prov . G . M ., by Bro . the Rev . C . J . Martyn , Past G . Chap , Dep . P . G . M ., on behalf of the brethren . Bro . W . Lake , too , the Asst . G .

Secretary , was also , during the same month , the recipient of a testimonial and an address in recognition of his invariable kindness and courtesy during the eight years he had fulfilled the duties of Editor of this journal , and Bro . C . F . Hogard , P . G . Std . Br ., was similarly honoured on his retirement from the post , which he had

filled for many years , of Secretary to the Israel Lodge , No . 205 . On the Sth February the Granite Lodge , No . 1328 , recognised the valuable services which Bro . J . Lewis Thomas , P . A . G . D . C , had rendered during a Secretaryship which had extended over

no less than 23 years , while 10 days later Bro . W . Jaffrey , P . P . G . D . East Lancashire , received an address of thanks on his retirement from the Chairmanship of ( he Freemasons' Hall Company , Manchester . A similar compliment , accompanied by a silver salver , was paid to Bro . George Everett , Past G . Treas .,
