MASONIC AND GENERAL TIDINGS

The regular monthly meeting- of the General Committee of the Royal Masonic Institution for Boys will be held at Freemasons' Hall , at 4 p . m ., to-morrow ( Saturday ) . The meetings of the Burgoyne Lodge of Instruction , No . 902 , will be held at Bro . Burrell's , Essex Arms , Essex-street , Strand , W . C , on Wednesday evenings from

6 to S , instead of Fridays from 7 to 9 . Bro . Batty , P . M . 902 , is the Preceptor , and Bro . W . R . Larter , Org . 902 , the Secretary . Dykes Conclave of the Red Cross of Rome and Constantine , No . 36 , met at Whitehaven on Wednesday , the 16 th ult ., Sir Knight John Mills , M . P . S ., in the chair . Four candidates were balloted for , accepted , and installed .

The sir knights subsequently dined at the Grand Hotel . Mr . William Dearden , a noted classical scholar and Yorkshire Poet . author of " The Star Seer , " " The Vale of Caldene , " & c , & c , calmly passed away at the ripe age of S 5 , at his residence , Warley , near Sowerby-bridge , on Thursday , the 24 th ult . He was acquainted with Southey , Wordsworth , all the Brontes , and other of their literary

contemporaries . For the last 20 years the deceased gentleman passed a quiet retired life at Warley , brightened by the visits of many old friends , some of whom were well-known members of the Craft . We refer , however , to this venerable gentleman ' s death more particularly because it is not generally known that one of his nearest surviving relatives has been a contributor to this journal

since its establishment . We refer to Bro . J . Ramsden Riley , of Bradford . Mr . Dearden has left a wife , one son —the Rev . William Dearden , M . A . ( Cantab . ) , R . N . —and one daughter to mourn his loss . The Provincial Grand Chapter of Cambridgeshire will be held in the Chapter-room at the Lion Hotel , Cambridge , on the 12 th March .

The Gueen and Court will leave Osborne and return to Windsor Castle on the 15 th instant , and the necessary arrangements and preparations are in progress . Among the members present at the winter dinner of the John Carpenter Club , which was held on Tuesday evening at the Albion Tavern , Aldersgate-street , were Bro . Frank Taylor , CC , who is the I . P . M . of the John

Carpenter Lodge , No . 1997 , and occupied the chair at the banquet ; Bro . C J . Wilkinson-Pimbury , the W . M . of the said lodge ; and Bros . Mount-Brown , M . A ., J . Drake , L . Ferguson , F . Inskipp , G . Inskipp , G . F . S . Warne , Hugh Wilson , and others . Up to Tuesday evening the Mansion House Fund , which is being raised to afford relief to the sufferers

by the famine in China , amounted to about £ 5000 . Bros , the Marquis , of Hertford , Viscount Valentia , and A . VV . Hall , M . P ., were present , with many others , at the funeral of Sir H . Dashwood , Bart ., at Kirtlington Parish Church , on Wednesday . Bro . Alderman Sir Polydore De Keyser was presented on Tuesday with a very handsomely bound and

illuminated address of thanks by a delegation from the Printers' Corporation , for his kindness in assisting with the Sheriffs at a meeting to inaugurate the Almshouses Extension Fund , recently held in the Board Room of the Printers' Almshouses at Wood Green . The 131 st annual General Court of Governors of the Orphan Working School , Haverstock Hill and

Hornsey Rise , was held at the City Terminus Hotel , Cannon-street , on Wednesday , when 10 girls and 32 boys on the senior list and three girls and five boys on the junior list were elected . Bro . General Lord Wolseley will preside at the annual meeting of the West Greenwich Ragged Schools and Working Lads' Institute at Alexandra Hall ,

Blackheath Village , on Friday , the 8 th instant . Messrs . Deutz and Geidermann , hearing that Bro . John Barnett , jun ., of Perinet et Fils , was the official Steward of the Highbury Lodge , No . 2192 , at the next Festival of the Benevolent Institution , have sent him five guineas for his list . We are sure Bro . John Barnett , jun ., will know how to appreciate so nice a compliment .

Many of our readers will learn with regret of the death of Bro . George Lazonby , builder , of Stockton , which took place at his residence on Sunday , where the deceased has been prostrate for about a month from an attach of pneumonia . It was , however , generally surmised he was recovering , and the news of his death has

caused a shock to his most intimate friends . Bro . Lazonby was widely known in the North Riding and throughout Durham as an excellent Mason . Not only in the Craft , but also in the Arch and Mark lodges had he high honours . Though holding no public offices he was highly and widely esteemed in Stockton . The deceased leaves a wife and family , the latter , however , grown up .

PROPOSED GRAND NATIONAL MASONIC BAZAAR . —Sir Arch . C . Campbell , Bart ,, of Blythswood , M . P ., Grand Master Mason of Scotland , intends to submit a proposal on an early day to the Grand Lodge of Scotland to the effect that a Grand National Masonic Bazaar should be held under the auspices of the Freemasons of Scotland for the purpose of assisting to raise funds for the completion

of the laudable scheme of extended Masonic benevolence recently promoted by the Grand Lodge , and the object of which is to grant substantial annuities to aged and deserving brethren of the Craft , their widows , or their families . Already a very large amount has been subscribed by the Craft towards the scheme , which was to have been formally launched by theGrandCommitteeat its meetingon Thursday ,

but the desire of the Grand Lodge is that a sum of not less than _( , Jo . ooo should be raised in connection with this scheme . Lady Campbell of Blythswood has consented to undertake the task of directing the general arrangements for carrying out the bazaar , and there is no doubt that in such able hands the bazaar will be a great success . It has not beer , yet decided whether the bazaar shall be held in Edinburgh or Glasgow .

In compliance with numerous requests , Bro . Sadler has decided to revise and reprint in book form the series of articles which recently appeared in the Freemason under the heading of "Notes on the Ceremony of Installation . " According to the latest reports , Lord Loughborough , eldest son of Bro . the Earl of Rosslyn , Past G .

Master of Scotland , whose health had given rise to very grave anxiety , has made some improvement towards recovery . At the annual meeting of the Provincial Grand Lodge of Bristol , held at the Freemasons' Hall , Parkstreet , on the 25 th ult ., the D . P . G . M ., Bro . W . A . F .

Powell , in the chair , letters were read from Lord Limerick announcing that , in consequence of his numerous engagements in London , he had resigned the office of Provincial Grand Master , and that the M . W . G . M ., the Prince of Wales , had appointed Bro . VV . A . F . Powell as his successor , an announcement which was received with

acclamation . The funeral of the late Earl of Seafield took place at Oamaru , New Zealand , on the 6 th December , and was of a public character . All the business p laces were closed , it being the usual weekly half-holiday . The funeral procession was composed of the Masonic lodges , the various volunteer corps , borough councillors , Druids

members of the Clan Grant ( of which the deceased Ear ! was chief ) , and citizens , headed by the local bands . On the night of the 17 th ult . a grand Masonic ball was held in the Town Hall , Retford , in connection with the Vernon Lodge , and under the patronage of the

Provincial Grand Lodge of Nottinghamshire , in aid of the Masonic Charities . Peck ' s band from Sheffield provided an excellent programme of music , and the catering of Mr . Walker , of the Criterion , gave geat satisfaction . There were a number of visiting brethren from the adjoining Provinces of Yorkshire and Lincolnshire .

An odd statement credits the Queen-Regent of Spain with the intention of becoming the Grand Mistress of the Freemasons of Spain . On the 22 nd ult ., the new hall of Lodge St . James , Old Monkland , 177 , which occupies a conspicuous position in Bank-street , Coatbridge , was formally consecrated by Bro . Colonel J . Clark Forrest of Auchinraith ,

The installation of the R . W . M . and other officers afterwards took place . By invitation of the directors of the Crystal Palace Company the children of the Royal Caledonian Schools and of the Gordon Boys' Orphanage , Dover , witnessed the afternoon performance of the pantomime "Cinderella , " on Monday . The directors have also issued

invitations to the North Surrey District Schools , the Reedham Asylum for Fatherless Children , and the Lambeth District Schools . The roof of the Prince ' s Racquet Court and Tennis Club , Knightsbridge ( late the Japanese village ) is now being glazed with the Patent Gold Medal " Victoria Dry Glazing , " Sam Deards and Company , Limited , 16 ,

Dashwood House , New Broad-street , E . G ., and Victoria Works , Harlow . The annual Masonic ball at Bury St . Edmunds Athenasum took place on the iSth ult ., but , as at the county ball on the preceding night , the attendance showed a decided falling off from the last occasion , only about 140 being present . The band of the Suffolk Regiment

performed a selection of music . The Stewards and many other brethren were in full Masonic attire . The decorations of the ball-room were somewhat more elaborate than usual , and comprised various emblems of the Craft . Some pretty dresses were worn , amongst the most effective being those of Miss Martyn , Mrs . C . D . Leech , jun ., Mrs . Hodges , and the Misses Burrell . The profits go to the Masonic Charities .

Bro . Lord Mayor Whitehead will distribute the prizes to the successful students of the Royal Female School of Art , Queen-square , Bloomsbury , on Tuesday , the 12 th inst . The conversazione which is to be given by his lordship and the Lady Mayoress , atthe Mansion House , in aid of the funds of the Homes for Little Boys , at Farningham and Swanley , has been fixed for Thursday , the

7 th March . Bro . Lord Charles Beresford , M . P ., has ] ust returned to town from visiting the Elswick Shipbuilding yards and gun factories , and has now left for the continent , in order that he may obtain as much information as possible of the programme fur shipbuilding in Germany , France , and Italy , returning to London in time for the

opening of the Parliamentary Session , which will open on Thursday , the 21 st instant . The Queen held a Council at Osborne on Tuesday , when Bros , the Earl of Limerick and Baron H . De Worms , M . P ., were introduced , and sworn in as members . Previous to the Council , Bro . the Earl of Kintore was introduced to her Majesty , and delivered up his stick of office as Captain of the Yeomen of the Guard , on

appointment as Governor of South Australia . Many of her Majesty ' s Jubilee gifts have been now arranged in the handsome oak and glass cabinets provided for them in the grand vestibule at Windsor Castle . The statue of the Queen occupies a central position against the north wall of the apartment , and has been placed under a carved oak Gothic canopy , bstween two of the cabinets . The collection , when opened for inspection , will constitute one of the chief attractions of the State apartments . Bro . John Aird , M . P ., presided at the first halfyearly meeting , held at St . James ' s Hall on Tuesday evening , of the Cab Drivers' Mutual Aid and Protection Society . The Society already musters 2275 , and the balance sheet shows a satisfactory sum in hand . HOLLOWAY ' S OINTMENT AND PILLS . — Coughs , Influenza . — The soothing properties of these medicaments render them well

Bro . General Lord Wolseleydelivered an address as President of the Harborne and Edgbaston Institute , before a crowded audience , in the Town Hall , Birmingham , on the 25 th ult ., on the defences of the Empire , and was loudly applauded at the close of his remarks . Mr . Joseph Chamberlain presided and introduced his lordship , and Lady Wolseley and Bro . Lord Norton were among the principal personages present .

Bro . Lord George Hamilton , M . P ., First Lord of the Admiralty , arrived at Osborne on the 24 th ult ., and had the honour of dining with the Queen and the Empress Frederick of Germany . Bro . the Earl of Carnarvon has been returned unopposed as a member of the Hampshire County Council , and has returned with the Countess and family to Highclere Castle .

Bro . Lord Balfour of Burlei gh , Parliamentary Under Secretary to the Board of Ttade , has appointed as his Private Secretary Mr . Robert C Heron-Maxwell , who acted in a similar capacity to Bro . the Earl of Onslow . The reception of the Duke and Duchess of

Connaught on the occasion of their recent visit to the Nizam at Hyderabad was most enthusiastic . A banquet was given by the Nizam , who himself proposed the Duke's health , whi'e his highness ' s subjects thronged the streets all day long in the hope of obtaining a glimpse of the Duke .

VVe are glad to hear that Bro . Pitt-Lewis , Q . C , M . P ., for the Barnstaple Division of Devonshire , has so far recovered from the serious illness which prevented his attending to his Parliamentary duties last Session , that he hopes to be able to resume his attendance in the Session now approaching .

The installation meeting of the Enoch Lodge , at Freemasons' Hall , on the 9 th ult ., was a most interesting one and , in its way , unique . Bro . Chas . F . McQueen , the W . M ., appointed his eldest son , Bro . W . T . B . " McQueen , as S . VV ., and his second ~ on , Bro . C . H . McQueen , as J . VV . _ We congratulate both father and sons , and trust that , as history is said to repeat itself , the future recorder of

Masonic events will have the good fortune to chronicle a similar incident in the same family in the next generation . In connection with this we should not omit to mention that Bro . McQueen , whose connection with art is so well known , reproduced in a programme of music , etc ., for this occasion some very charming etchings , which will be valued as souvenirs of the meeting-.

A large and fashionable gathering assembled on the 2 ist ult ., in the hall of the Otley Mechanics' Institute , on the occasion of the third annual ball promoted b y the brethren of the Royal Wharfedale Lodge , No . 1108 , in aid of the Masonic Charities . No fewer than 200 responded to the invitations . As in former years , the hall was

elaborately decorated . The platform was set out as a refreshment bar and lounge . The music was supplied by Mr . H . Fall's band , dancing being kept up with great spirit until the early hours of the morning . It is expected that there will be a respectable surplus to hand over to the Charities .

The first annual ball of the Barnato Lodge , No . 2265 , will be held at the Hotel Metropole , Whitehall Rooms , on Thursday , 14 th February next . By special dispensation , brethren ace tj appear in Masonic Cralt clothing . Tickets , including wines , spirits , and champagne supper—gentlemen , £ 1 ios . ; ladies , £ 1 is . ; double tickets ( to admit lady and genteman ) £ 2 5 s .

The installation meeting of St . John ' s Lodge , No . 279 , took place on the 2 nd ult ., at Leicester . the W . M . elect was Bro . W . Maurice Williams , S . W ., the Installing Master being Bro . Kelly , P . P . G . M ., supported by a Board of upwards of 30 Installed Masters , amongst whom were the Dep . Prov . G . M ., and several other high dignitaries . The Prov . G . Master would have been

present , but was , unfortunately , prevented . There was a crowded lodge , and great interest was manifested on the occasion . The ceremony was very impressively performed by the Installing Master . At the subsequent banquet , nearly a hundred brethren took part , and the arrangements were both elaborate and perfect , a most enjoyable re-union

being the result . The Fifteen Sections will be worked in the Barnato Lodge of Instruction , No . 2265 , by the members of the Israel Lodge of Instruction , on Monday evening , the 4 th inst ., at 6 . 30 o ' clock precisely , at the Victoria Hotel , 25 , Charterhouse-street , E . C . Bro . J . Pinder , Preceptor . Bro . B . Da Costa , S . D . 1349 , will preside .

A very strong case for the next election to the Girls' School comes from Constantinople , viz ., the youngest daughter of the late Bro . A . W . Mountain , D . G . M . of Turkey , who was for 33 years Engineer-in-Chief of the Imperial Ottoman Mint , and for 31 years a subscribing

member of the Oriental Lodge , No . 687 , 21 years of which he filled the office of Treasurer . Owing to losses by the failure in business of his brother , and depreciation of Turkish Stock , his widow is left in reverse circumstances . Bro . Pulman , of the British Museum , has the conduct of the case and will receive votes . THE INTERNATIONAL ICE CARNIVAL . —We are able to state that the list of stall-holders of the Carnival to be held in March , at the Royal Albert Hall , for the West End Hospital is now filled up . The Austrian stalls will be under the direction of Lady Francis Seymour ; Canada will beheld by Lady Beaumont ; the Countess of Romney takes England , and the Marchioness of Waterford ,

Denmark ; Holland and Germany by Hon . Lady Macdonald and the Countess de Morella respectively ; Ireland will be held by Viscountess Coke ; and Italy by the Marchioness of Carmarthen . Other stalls will be taken by Lady Heron Maxwell and Lady Spencer Clifford , and among the ladies assisting will be the Duchess of Leinster , Lady Wm . Lennox , Lady Decies , Lady Lamington , and many others . The arena of the Albeit Hall will be entirely enclosed bv

winter scenery of all countries , and each of the stalls set in characteristic surroundings . The falls of Niagara will be a chief feature , and will occupy one end of trie vista , beneath which visitors will be able to pass as at the original ones . The ascent of the Matterhorn , with guides , ropes , and Alpenstocks , will also be a great attraction , and winter games and sports peculiar to each country will be arranged .

Hornsey Rise , was held at the City Terminus Hotel , Cannon-street , on Wednesday , when 10 girls and 32 boys on the senior list and three girls and five boys on the junior list were elected . Bro . General Lord Wolseley will preside at the annual meeting of the West Greenwich Ragged Schools and Working Lads' Institute at Alexandra Hall ,

Blackheath Village , on Friday , the 8 th instant . Messrs . Deutz and Geidermann , hearing that Bro . John Barnett , jun ., of Perinet et Fils , was the official Steward of the Highbury Lodge , No . 2192 , at the next Festival of the Benevolent Institution , have sent him five guineas for his list . We are sure Bro . John Barnett , jun ., will know how to appreciate so nice a compliment .

Many of our readers will learn with regret of the death of Bro . George Lazonby , builder , of Stockton , which took place at his residence on Sunday , where the deceased has been prostrate for about a month from an attach of pneumonia . It was , however , generally surmised he was recovering , and the news of his death has

caused a shock to his most intimate friends . Bro . Lazonby was widely known in the North Riding and throughout Durham as an excellent Mason . Not only in the Craft , but also in the Arch and Mark lodges had he high honours . Though holding no public offices he was highly and widely esteemed in Stockton . The deceased leaves a wife and family , the latter , however , grown up .

PROPOSED GRAND NATIONAL MASONIC BAZAAR . —Sir Arch . C . Campbell , Bart ,, of Blythswood , M . P ., Grand Master Mason of Scotland , intends to submit a proposal on an early day to the Grand Lodge of Scotland to the effect that a Grand National Masonic Bazaar should be held under the auspices of the Freemasons of Scotland for the purpose of assisting to raise funds for the completion

of the laudable scheme of extended Masonic benevolence recently promoted by the Grand Lodge , and the object of which is to grant substantial annuities to aged and deserving brethren of the Craft , their widows , or their families . Already a very large amount has been subscribed by the Craft towards the scheme , which was to have been formally launched by theGrandCommitteeat its meetingon Thursday ,

but the desire of the Grand Lodge is that a sum of not less than _( , Jo . ooo should be raised in connection with this scheme . Lady Campbell of Blythswood has consented to undertake the task of directing the general arrangements for carrying out the bazaar , and there is no doubt that in such able hands the bazaar will be a great success . It has not beer , yet decided whether the bazaar shall be held in Edinburgh or Glasgow .

In compliance with numerous requests , Bro . Sadler has decided to revise and reprint in book form the series of articles which recently appeared in the Freemason under the heading of "Notes on the Ceremony of Installation . " According to the latest reports , Lord Loughborough , eldest son of Bro . the Earl of Rosslyn , Past G .

Master of Scotland , whose health had given rise to very grave anxiety , has made some improvement towards recovery . At the annual meeting of the Provincial Grand Lodge of Bristol , held at the Freemasons' Hall , Parkstreet , on the 25 th ult ., the D . P . G . M ., Bro . W . A . F .

Powell , in the chair , letters were read from Lord Limerick announcing that , in consequence of his numerous engagements in London , he had resigned the office of Provincial Grand Master , and that the M . W . G . M ., the Prince of Wales , had appointed Bro . VV . A . F . Powell as his successor , an announcement which was received with

acclamation . The funeral of the late Earl of Seafield took place at Oamaru , New Zealand , on the 6 th December , and was of a public character . All the business p laces were closed , it being the usual weekly half-holiday . The funeral procession was composed of the Masonic lodges , the various volunteer corps , borough councillors , Druids

members of the Clan Grant ( of which the deceased Ear ! was chief ) , and citizens , headed by the local bands . On the night of the 17 th ult . a grand Masonic ball was held in the Town Hall , Retford , in connection with the Vernon Lodge , and under the patronage of the

Provincial Grand Lodge of Nottinghamshire , in aid of the Masonic Charities . Peck ' s band from Sheffield provided an excellent programme of music , and the catering of Mr . Walker , of the Criterion , gave geat satisfaction . There were a number of visiting brethren from the adjoining Provinces of Yorkshire and Lincolnshire .

An odd statement credits the Queen-Regent of Spain with the intention of becoming the Grand Mistress of the Freemasons of Spain . On the 22 nd ult ., the new hall of Lodge St . James , Old Monkland , 177 , which occupies a conspicuous position in Bank-street , Coatbridge , was formally consecrated by Bro . Colonel J . Clark Forrest of Auchinraith ,

The installation of the R . W . M . and other officers afterwards took place . By invitation of the directors of the Crystal Palace Company the children of the Royal Caledonian Schools and of the Gordon Boys' Orphanage , Dover , witnessed the afternoon performance of the pantomime "Cinderella , " on Monday . The directors have also issued

invitations to the North Surrey District Schools , the Reedham Asylum for Fatherless Children , and the Lambeth District Schools . The roof of the Prince ' s Racquet Court and Tennis Club , Knightsbridge ( late the Japanese village ) is now being glazed with the Patent Gold Medal " Victoria Dry Glazing , " Sam Deards and Company , Limited , 16 ,

Dashwood House , New Broad-street , E . G ., and Victoria Works , Harlow . The annual Masonic ball at Bury St . Edmunds Athenasum took place on the iSth ult ., but , as at the county ball on the preceding night , the attendance showed a decided falling off from the last occasion , only about 140 being present . The band of the Suffolk Regiment

performed a selection of music . The Stewards and many other brethren were in full Masonic attire . The decorations of the ball-room were somewhat more elaborate than usual , and comprised various emblems of the Craft . Some pretty dresses were worn , amongst the most effective being those of Miss Martyn , Mrs . C . D . Leech , jun ., Mrs . Hodges , and the Misses Burrell . The profits go to the Masonic Charities .

Bro . Lord Mayor Whitehead will distribute the prizes to the successful students of the Royal Female School of Art , Queen-square , Bloomsbury , on Tuesday , the 12 th inst . The conversazione which is to be given by his lordship and the Lady Mayoress , atthe Mansion House , in aid of the funds of the Homes for Little Boys , at Farningham and Swanley , has been fixed for Thursday , the

7 th March . Bro . Lord Charles Beresford , M . P ., has ] ust returned to town from visiting the Elswick Shipbuilding yards and gun factories , and has now left for the continent , in order that he may obtain as much information as possible of the programme fur shipbuilding in Germany , France , and Italy , returning to London in time for the

opening of the Parliamentary Session , which will open on Thursday , the 21 st instant . The Queen held a Council at Osborne on Tuesday , when Bros , the Earl of Limerick and Baron H . De Worms , M . P ., were introduced , and sworn in as members . Previous to the Council , Bro . the Earl of Kintore was introduced to her Majesty , and delivered up his stick of office as Captain of the Yeomen of the Guard , on

appointment as Governor of South Australia . Many of her Majesty ' s Jubilee gifts have been now arranged in the handsome oak and glass cabinets provided for them in the grand vestibule at Windsor Castle . The statue of the Queen occupies a central position against the north wall of the apartment , and has been placed under a carved oak Gothic canopy , bstween two of the cabinets . The collection , when opened for inspection , will constitute one of the chief attractions of the State apartments . Bro . John Aird , M . P ., presided at the first halfyearly meeting , held at St . James ' s Hall on Tuesday evening , of the Cab Drivers' Mutual Aid and Protection Society . The Society already musters 2275 , and the balance sheet shows a satisfactory sum in hand . Bro . General Lord Wolseleydelivered an address as President of the Harborne and Edgbaston Institute , before a crowded audience , in the Town Hall , Birmingham , on the 25 th ult ., on the defences of the Empire , and was loudly applauded at the close of his remarks . Mr . Joseph Chamberlain presided and introduced his lordship , and Lady Wolseley and Bro . Lord Norton were among the principal personages present .

Bro . Lord George Hamilton , M . P ., First Lord of the Admiralty , arrived at Osborne on the 24 th ult ., and had the honour of dining with the Queen and the Empress Frederick of Germany . Bro . the Earl of Carnarvon has been returned unopposed as a member of the Hampshire County Council , and has returned with the Countess and family to Highclere Castle .

Bro . Lord Balfour of Burlei gh , Parliamentary Under Secretary to the Board of Ttade , has appointed as his Private Secretary Mr . Robert C Heron-Maxwell , who acted in a similar capacity to Bro . the Earl of Onslow . The reception of the Duke and Duchess of

Connaught on the occasion of their recent visit to the Nizam at Hyderabad was most enthusiastic . A banquet was given by the Nizam , who himself proposed the Duke's health , whi'e his highness ' s subjects thronged the streets all day long in the hope of obtaining a glimpse of the Duke .

VVe are glad to hear that Bro . Pitt-Lewis , Q . C , M . P ., for the Barnstaple Division of Devonshire , has so far recovered from the serious illness which prevented his attending to his Parliamentary duties last Session , that he hopes to be able to resume his attendance in the Session now approaching .

The installation meeting of the Enoch Lodge , at Freemasons' Hall , on the 9 th ult ., was a most interesting one and , in its way , unique . Bro . Chas . F . McQueen , the W . M ., appointed his eldest son , Bro . W . T . B . " McQueen , as S . VV ., and his second ~ on , Bro . C . H . McQueen , as J . VV . _ We congratulate both father and sons , and trust that , as history is said to repeat itself , the future recorder of

Masonic events will have the good fortune to chronicle a similar incident in the same family in the next generation . In connection with this we should not omit to mention that Bro . McQueen , whose connection with art is so well known , reproduced in a programme of music , etc ., for this occasion some very charming etchings , which will be valued as souvenirs of the meeting-.

A large and fashionable gathering assembled on the 2 ist ult ., in the hall of the Otley Mechanics' Institute , on the occasion of the third annual ball promoted b y the brethren of the Royal Wharfedale Lodge , No . 1108 , in aid of the Masonic Charities . No fewer than 200 responded to the invitations . As in former years , the hall was

elaborately decorated . The platform was set out as a refreshment bar and lounge . The music was supplied by Mr . H . Fall's band , dancing being kept up with great spirit until the early hours of the morning . It is expected that there will be a respectable surplus to hand over to the Charities .

The first annual ball of the Barnato Lodge , No . 2265 , will be held at the Hotel Metropole , Whitehall Rooms , on Thursday , 14 th February next . By special dispensation , brethren ace tj appear in Masonic Cralt clothing . Tickets , including wines , spirits , and champagne supper—gentlemen , £ 1 ios . ; ladies , £ 1 is . ; double tickets ( to admit lady and genteman ) £ 2 5 s .

The installation meeting of St . John ' s Lodge , No . 279 , took place on the 2 nd ult ., at Leicester . the W . M . elect was Bro . W . Maurice Williams , S . W ., the Installing Master being Bro . Kelly , P . P . G . M ., supported by a Board of upwards of 30 Installed Masters , amongst whom were the Dep . Prov . G . M ., and several other high dignitaries . The Prov . G . Master would have been

present , but was , unfortunately , prevented . There was a crowded lodge , and great interest was manifested on the occasion . The ceremony was very impressively performed by the Installing Master . At the subsequent banquet , nearly a hundred brethren took part , and the arrangements were both elaborate and perfect , a most enjoyable re-union

being the result . The Fifteen Sections will be worked in the Barnato Lodge of Instruction , No . 2265 , by the members of the Israel Lodge of Instruction , on Monday evening , the 4 th inst ., at 6 . 30 o ' clock precisely , at the Victoria Hotel , 25 , Charterhouse-street , E . C . Bro . J . Pinder , Preceptor . Bro . B . Da Costa , S . D . 1349 , will preside .

A very strong case for the next election to the Girls' School comes from Constantinople , viz ., the youngest daughter of the late Bro . A . W . Mountain , D . G . M . of Turkey , who was for 33 years Engineer-in-Chief of the Imperial Ottoman Mint , and for 31 years a subscribing

member of the Oriental Lodge , No . 687 , 21 years of which he filled the office of Treasurer . Owing to losses by the failure in business of his brother , and depreciation of Turkish Stock , his widow is left in reverse circumstances . Bro . Pulman , of the British Museum , has the conduct of the case and will receive votes . THE INTERNATIONAL ICE CARNIVAL . —We are able to state that the list of stall-holders of the Carnival to be held in March , at the Royal Albert Hall , for the West End Hospital is now filled up . The Austrian stalls will be under the direction of Lady Francis Seymour ; Canada will beheld by Lady Beaumont ; the Countess of Romney takes England , and the Marchioness of Waterford ,

Denmark ; Holland and Germany by Hon . Lady Macdonald and the Countess de Morella respectively ; Ireland will be held by Viscountess Coke ; and Italy by the Marchioness of Carmarthen . Other stalls will be taken by Lady Heron Maxwell and Lady Spencer Clifford , and among the ladies assisting will be the Duchess of Leinster , Lady Wm . Lennox , Lady Decies , Lady Lamington , and many others . The arena of the Albeit Hall will be entirely enclosed bv

winter scenery of all countries , and each of the stalls set in characteristic surroundings . The falls of Niagara will be a chief feature , and will occupy one end of trie vista , beneath which visitors will be able to pass as at the original ones . The ascent of the Matterhorn , with guides , ropes , and Alpenstocks , will also be a great attraction , and winter games and sports peculiar to each country will be arranged .
