W . H . J . —( 1 ) If our correspondent will leindly refer to his Grand Lodge Calendar he will find that there never has been a Prov . Grand Master of Devonshire of the nam : he mentions . ( 2 ) There is no Order or Degree in Masonry to which women are eligible to be admitted , but there used to be a kind of system in France , known as Adoptive Masonry , for women ; and an attempt was made in the United States some 401 ears ago to establish something of the same kind , but nothing good , so far as we are aware , ever came of it .

There is more than the usual programme of business to be dealt with at the Quarterly Convocation of Supreme Grand Chapter on Wednesday , the 5 th instant . Firstly , as regards the Report of the Committee of General Purposes , which will be submitted for adoption by Grand Chapter , it contains an expression of deep regret that Comp . Robert Grey should

have requested the M . E . Grand Z . not to re-appoint him to the office of President of the Committee for the ensuing year ; a handsome tribute of thanks to him for his eminent services in that capacity during the past 10 years ; and the unanimously-expressed wish that the resolution in which these feelings are set forth should be engrossed and illuminated on vellum and presented with a jewel to Comp . Grey .

Masonic Notes.

We cordially endorse these opinions , and have every confidence that the wish thus unanimously uttered will be promptly and unhesitatingly entertained by Grand Chapter . Comp . Grey has discharged many duties and responsibilities in the various Masonic offices he has filled during his career in the Craft . In every one of those positions he has acquitted himself

in a manner which reflects honour upon himself and has conferred many , and great , and lasting benefits upon the Craft ; but in none has he acquitted himself more successfully or rendered more signal services to Freesmasonry than in that of President of the Committee of Grand Chapter . # * *

There are also three ' notices of motion —( 1 ) by Comp . Henry Ganod , P . A . G . D . C , to the effect " that , in the opinion of this Supreme Grand Chapter , it is desirable that the practice of excluding from the opening of Royal Arch chapters companions other than Installed Principals be discontinued ; " ( 2 ) by Comp .

Sir George D . Harris , President Committee of General Purposes , " that the sum of 100 guineas be contributed to the fund now being raised in behalf of Guy ' s Hospital ; " and ( 3 ) by the same Comp . Sir George D . Harris , that in cases in which a Prince of the Blood Royal is Grand Superintendent of a District , he shall be empowered to appoint a Pro Grand Superintendent ,

who shall have the same qualifications as a Grand Superintendent , the same privileges , be installed as such , and take rank immediately before District Grand H ., and on retirement from office shall be entitled to the rank of a Past Grand Superintendent . As regards the second and third of these motions ; we imagine they will pass unchallenged , but we are curious as to the fate in store for the first motion .

* * * We record with pleasure that the festival which was held in the grounds of Trentham Hall on Wednesday , the 15 th ult ., in celebration of the 25 th anniversary of the establishment of the Staffordshire Masonic Charitable Association should have proved in every way a

magnificent success . There was an exceptionally large attendance of brethren and their friends , the number of those present being set down at some 1200 . The arrangements were excellent , reflecting the greatest possible credit on Bro . E . V . Greatbach , P . P . S . G . W .,

the Chairman , and Bro . J . B . Ashwell , P . P . S . G . D ., the Hon . Secretary of the Committee of Management , while last and best of all , the sums subscribed on the occasion to the Association amounted to the very handsome total of 1000 guineas .

* * Bro . the Earl of Dartmouth , Prov . G . Master of Staffordshire , who is President of the Association , was the central figure at the gathering , ai . d among those who supported his lordship were Bro . Col . George S . Tudor , one of his predecessors in office ; Bro . Col . Bindley , P . G . D ., Dep . P . G . M . ; and Bro . Frank James ,

Past Dep . P . G . M ., while among the contributors to the Fund was Bro . Col . George A . Vernon , who , though it is more than 30 years since he resigned the office of Prov . G . Master , exhibited his continued interest in the wellbeing of the Province he formerly presided over with so much ability , by forwarding a cheque for , 650 towards the Festival .

* * * As regards the Association , in behalf of one of whose Funds the Festival was held , with a view to showing how great have been the services it has rendered both to the central Institutions by means of its A Fund and locally by its B Fund , it will doubtless

suffice if we quote the figures mentioned by Bro . F . James , Past D . P . G . M ., in the speech in which he proposed success to the Institution . In 1871 , when it was founded , it was the means of contributing to one of the Central Charities in London the modest sum of £$ 5 s . ; last year it distributed amongst the three no less than £ 613 18 s . 6 d ., the total it has raised

for these Institutions during its existence being ^ 11 , 400 , while during the same period it has raised . £ 2500 towards educating locally the children of deceased Staffordshire Masons . We congratulate the Province of Staffordshire , both on the great success of this particular Festival and likewise on the splendid results it has been able to achieve during the years that have elapsed since its organisation .

* * * We learn from the June number of our respected contemporary , the Canadian Craftsman , that with its issue for that month its 30 th annual volume was completed . In respect of such an auspicious announcement as this we can only repeat , but , if possible , with still

greater emphasis , what we have said in respect of other previous announcements of a similar character , that we most heartily congratulate the Canadian Craftsman on the very great success which has attended its efforts in behalf of Masonry in the Dominion of Canada . It is one of our most welcome

exchanges , and we never read a number without feeling that we have acquired some further knowledge of Craft policies and modes of procedure and a clearer insight into the spirit by which our brethren throughout the Dominion are actuated . We trust it may continue to flourish ever more and more abundantly .
