THE PROPER USE OF GAMES . — -The Hon . Alfred Lyttelton , M . P ., who presented the prizes to the boys of the Warwick King's School last week observed , in the course of his speech , that no one could accuse him of saying anything against games . No one enjoyed them more than he did , but he feared there was a tendency , owing to the growing professional spirit , to attach too much importance to the place which sports occupied in our social scheme and to make a business of them , instead of keeping them as that form ' of recreation which should make us more fitted to do our work in the world .

IN THE UNAVOIDABLE ABSENCE of Bro . Lord Mayor , Sir W . Wilkin , Bro . Sit Sydney Waterlow presided at a meeting of the Council of the Hospital Sunday Fund , which was held at the Mansion House on Tuesday . The report of the Distribution Committee showed that the total amount available after allowing for liabilities and current expenses was £ 44 , 029 , and the Council recommended that out of this sum £ 41 , 829 should be apportioned among 125 hospitals and 55 dispensaries . A sum of £ ' 22 co , being five per cent , of the total , was set apart for the purchase of surgical appliances during the ensuing year .

BRITISH WORKMAN'S AND GENERAL ASSURANCE COMPANY , LIMITED . The directors of this enterprising Company issue a gratifying report of a prosperous year ' s trading as well as of certain innovations for which the British Workman has distinguished itself for many years as the pioneer of progressive measures , wisely conceived and largely enhancing the advantages of its large and constantly increasing membership . In the year now reported upon the directors have found the compass of their work so lareely on the increase that they have been compelled to have

recourse to extensive structural alterations and enlargement of their Broadstreet Corner ( Birmingham ) property . To effect such a purpose they have taken in a further consideralie portion-of the property , in addition to which three new rooms , an additional strong room , and an engine house ( for the purpose of electric lighting , which will be adopted throughout the Company ' s offices ) have been built . Altogether 12 new rcoms have been added to the office buildings . During the year special tables of benefit have been issued in pursuance of a further effort to meet the requirements of

the old age pension scheme , and the encouragement of yearly , half-yearly , or quarterlj payment of premiums in place of the unwieldy and costly weekly collections has been lound to answer the purpose admirably , the saving , under the scheme , having been found very considerable and the advantages are much appreciated by the policy holders . TMsn . w plan has enabled the control to issuespecial industrial tables , which hive proved highly beneficial . The total income of the Company was £ 438 , 250 15 s . 1 id ., and the total expenditure £ 395 , 249 us . id ., leaving a balance on the year ' s accounts of

£ 43 , 001 4 s . 10 J . Of new business in the ordinary department , the nunber of policies issued was 29 G 3 , assuring the sum of ^ 267 , 309 Ss ., at an annual premium of £ 15 , 3 ^ 3 2 > - 2 d , a large number of policies having , as usual , been rejected . A mighty work was done in the industrial department , the number of policies issued having bsen 35 i , S 42 , at an annual premium of ^ 203 , 224 13 s . Sd . The total number of policies issued for the year was 354 , 805 , at an annual premium of £ 218 , 58 7 155 . iod . The amount paid in claims in the ordinary department was £ 15 , 527 173 . od ., including

£ 1153 7 s . 3 d . surrender claims , whilst in the industrial department the amount paid was £ iGo , 295 Mi- 3 d ., including £ 8051 4 s . surrender claims . There is a pathetic and somewhat melancholy interest aroused in the latter item quoted . The British Workman s and General was the first to introduce a surrender value to an industrial policy , respecting which less enterprising and less philanthropic institutions still offer less succour to those of their members who have fallen upon evil times and are consequently unable to maintain their policies . In this instance , however , no policy is allowed to lapse without a liberal compensation , and , although the total of £ 9204 paid last year for surrend ; rs much to

represents so saved to those who have resigned their policies . it is still be regretted that they should lose the advantages which appear to accumulite under the successful developments of the company ' s operations . It is by a thorough regard for their absolute welfare and a solicitude for providing the very largest measure ot benefit and concessions to its members , that this institution has become famous , and justifiably popular everywhere , and its founder and managing director—Mr . Henry Port —with his colleagues , deserve well of the public for the excellent work they have , W their judicious administration , effected in the last 30 years , during which no less a su " than £ 1 , 035 , 683 13 s . id . has been disbursed in claims .
