SATURDAY J UNE I , 1901 .

Masonic Notes.

flDasontc fiotea .

The regular Quarterly Communication of United Grand Lodge will be held at Freemasons' Hall on Wednesday , the 5 U 1 instant . There is an imposing array of business to be transacted , and naturally

great interest will be taken in the election of brethren to serve on the Board of General Purposes , there being a far more formidable list of candidates than usual . There are also sundry Notices of Motion , some of which are likely to attract attention .

The first of these Notices stands in the name of the M . W . Pro Grand Mast-. r , and is to the effect that a sim of 500 guineas be voted from the funds of Grand Lod ge toward s the Memorial th . t is being raised to her late Majesty , Queen Victoria . As to the propriety

j » this Motion there cannot be two opinions . Our late Queen never missed an oppoKunity of exhibiting her p lnte « st in Freemasonry . She was a Patron and ^ ppotter of the Charitable Insf . tutions which have « n established b y our Society , and it will doubtless

be in the recollection of our readers that on the occasion of her sojourn in Ireland , she paid a visit to the Masonic Orphan School for Girls at Balls Bridge Dublin , and expressed herself as delighted with the reports that were laid before her and the evidence she J had of the excellent character of the School and the good it was accomplishing .

* * » There is a ' so a notice of motion by the Grand Registrar for amending Article 8 7 of the Book of Constitutions—which provides that a Provincial or Dist let Grand Master shall not confer past rank on any of the bre'hren in his Province or District—by adding to it

the words " Unless specially empowered to do so by the Grand Master on an important co-nmemorative occasion . " Hitherto , when such an occasion has presented itself , as in 188 7 , 18 9 6 , 18 97 , & c , it has been necessary to suspend the operation of this Art'd ; , and

this has made it necessary that Grand Lofge should piss a resolution for each such suspension . In future the Grand Master will empower the Pro-incial and District Grand Masters to confer past rank , and Grand Lodge will be spared the trouble of suspending the rule .

•* » As for the motion of which Bro . Thomas J . Hutchinson , P . M ., has given notice , to the effect tbat the Board of General Purposes should consider and report to Grand Lodge as to the course it may consider it desirable to adopt in respect of the election

of Grand Treasurer , we doubt not that Gand Lodge will readily fall in with any plan which will render impossible the unseemliness that has been witnessed when two or more candidates have been nominated for the office , and party spirit has run high , as it is apt to

do on such occasions . We are unable to say whether or not Grand Lodge will accept the motion j but we shall all of us hail with pleasure the adoption of any course that will render these most undesirable cont : sts impossible .

* Warrants for the constitution of 15 new lodges have been granted by the M . W . Grand Master since the Quarterly Communication in M ^ rch . Seven of these are located in the London district , namely , the London Hospital , No . 2845 ; the Forest Hill , No .

2846 j the Polytechnic , No . 2847 i 'he Rosemary , No-2851 ; the Norfolk , No . 2852 ; the Chere Reine , No . 285 , 3 i an < * 'he Golden Square Lodge , No . 2857 . Six are located in the Province ' , the Beaconsfield , No . 2849 , at the place bearing that name , being added to the roll in Buckinghamshire ; the Temperantia ,

No . 2854 , Whitehaven , in the Province of Cumberland and Westmoreland ; the Chingford , No . 2859 , at the place of that name in Essex ; the Victoria Lodge , No . 2848 , at Wolverhampton , Staffordshire j the Astolat Lodge , No . 2858 , at Guildford , in Surrey ; and the Regent Lodge , No . 2856 , Barnsley , in the

Province of West Yorkshire . The remaining two will meet in Districts Abroad , namely , the Robertson , No . 2850 , Robertson , in Cape Colony ; and the Far Cathay Lodge , No . 2855 , at Hankow , in Chini . The feature about this list of new bderis is that so many of them meet in the Metropolis , which must now muster fully 500 lodges .

# The regular Quarterly Communication of the Grand Lodge of Mark Master Masons for England and Wales , & c , will be held at Mark Masons' Hall on Tuesday , the 4 th instant , when a full programme of

business will be dealt with . The Grand Officers for the ensuing year will be appointed and invested , and a ter the meeting the Grand Festival will be held at the Freemasons' Tavern : We defer our remarks on the Report of the General Board till next week .

» * » We are asked to announce that Thurs lay , the 6 th inst ., will be the latest day by which Petitions for fhe October Election , 1 9 , of the Royal Masonic Institution for Girls will be received . It is , however , very desirable , that they should be received as much before that date as poss'ble .

* The annual sports of the Royal Masonic Institution for Boys will be held at the Institution , Wood Green , to-morrow ( Saturday ) at 3 p . m . The Boys' Band of the Strand Union Schools will play from 2 . 30 p . m . ••»

The early part of the present year appears to have been an exceptionally busy period in the District of Queensland , as many as four Emergent Communications having been held in addition to the regular Quarterly Communication on the 6 th March . The fir > t of the meetings of Emergency was held in the

Masonic Hall , Brisbane , on Friday , the 25 th January , having been summoned for the purpose of considering an humble address to His Majesty upon the death of our late Sovereign , Queen Victoria . Bro . the Hon . Augustus C . Gregory , C . M . G ., M . L . C ., Dist . Grand Master , presided , and was supported by his Deputy ,

Bro . B . L . Barnett , P . G . D ., many Dist . G . Officers , and a ivimbcr of members and visitors . In the course of the proceedings the Dist . G . Master delivered a short address in which he paid a high tribute of respect to the late Queen , and remarked that it was impossible to over-estimate the less the Empire had s > is ' ained by her death .

* * * The Address , which was passed in solemn silence , was as follovs : " To the King ' s Most Excellent Majesty . The District Grand Lodge of Queensland , in Special Communication assembled , crave leave to approach Your Majesty in duty and affection , and with prayer that the Almighty Consoler of Griefs may

mitigate the sorrows of Your Majesty ' s House and Family and the Nation at the demise of that Most Gracious Lady under whose beneficent reign this extended Empire has enjoyed such great happiness , prosperity , and security . " The Address was signed by the Dist . G . Master , the Dep . Dist . G . Master , Dist . G . Registrar , and couite-signed by the Dist . G . Secretary .

* * * The other three Emergent Communications were held at Gympie , Rockhampton , and Barcaldine on the 14 th , 27 th , and 28 : h February respectively , and were in each case presided over by the District Grand Master . The Gympie meeting was held for the

purpose of laying the foundation stone of a Masonic Hall , and was attended by the Prov . Grand Master under the Irish Constitution and his principal offhers . The Rockhampton and Barcaldine meetings were held for the purpose of dedicating the Masonic H ills which had oeen erected for the use of the Craft in those towns . At the former gathering , Bro . John

Lang , a : ting District Grand Master , under the Scott ish Constitution , as soon as the office of dedication according to the English rite was over , assumed the chair and performed a similar office according to the Scottish working , and when this was done the District Grand Master ( E . C . ) resumed the chair and brought the proceedings to a close .

? * » The regular Communicatio 1 , on the 6 th March , was held in the Masonic Hal 1 , Brisbane , under the presidency of thi District Grand Mas ' er , and was very fully attended . The District Grand Treasurer ' s statements of account for the quarter and year ending the

31 st December , 1 9 00 , were very satisfactory . The general account for the year , which opened with a balance to the good of ^ 349 17 s . 3 I ., and closed with one of ^ 316 lis . 8 d ., showed receipts a-nounting to upwards of . £ 1472 , and expenditure of over ^ 1505 , including donations to the Patriotic Fund and South Africa Masonic Relief Fund of / loo and £ toS

respectively , the assets being close on ^ 2273 , and the liabilities nil . The Benevolent Fund account was equally gratifying , the balance-sheet at the end of the year showing a balance in hand of j £ i 28 i 4 s ., and capital account of ^ 1866 16 s . gd . The amount disbursed in relief during the year was , in round figures , , £ 222 . In the course of the meeting the District Grand Officers for ths ensuing year were appointed .

••» We have received copy of the Printed Report of the proceedings of the Dist . G . LoJge of Jamaica , firstly at the half-yearly Conmunication held in the Sussex Hall , Kingston , ' 0 . 1 the 24 th J inuary ; and secondly at a Special Communication on ths 7 th March . Bro .

the Hon . C . B . Morse , C . B ., C . M . G ., Dep . Dist . G . Master , presided at the former , when the regular business of the District G . Lodge was transacted , and the District G . Officers for the year were appointed and invested . The latter was held for the purpose ' of installing Bro . the Hon . ' C . B . Morse , C . B ,

C . M . G ., as Dist . G . Master in succession to the late Bro . J . C . Macglashan , the ceremony being performed by Bro . R . S . Haughlon , Past Dep . Dist . G . Master . In the case of this Dist . G . Lodge alsj the particulars furnished in the report sho . v that both financially and otherwise the Craft in Jimaica is in a very flouishing state .

The annual meeting of the Prov . G . Lolge of Northants and Hunts , will be held at St . Neot ' s , this ( Friday ) afternoon , when we have in doubt the reports for the past year will show that the Province has flourished as heretofore , under the able and kindly guidance of the Earl of Euston , Prov . G . Master .
